What they probably did was set up their own test before sending it to you. Which would explain everything that you were questioning. If they checked it to make sure it didn't leak before sending it i guess that you could classify it as QC. Which if you ask me is what they should do with EVERY product before selling anything. Yes this is one of my favorite review channel for the products Luke does review. Reading the comments I really do hope that some of you do not make your decisions based on review from this channel only. Regardless of the brand, QC, there still is a chance something could go wrong. I am 100% sure if you search the internet for any issues from a product you are interested or that you are 100% happy with, you will for sure find someone with some level of issues. Just because there is 1 negetive review and I am a fan of that reviewer does not stop me from making a purchase. I just don't like reading comments when people say "I am never gonna gonna buy from that company!",

They must've tested the medium tent first to make SURE it wouldn't leak before they sent it to you. And they sent you the tent that was tested, rather than sending you a brand new, medium sized tent - with all the parts included - so you could test it right out of the box. But they did fix the problem and the tent (at least, that particular tent) doesn't leak!
@GuyPipili Жыл бұрын
That still presents a problem. How do you know if this fix is being done throughout the manufacturing of said tent. How do we know that this tent was the only one fixed and that they tested it themselves to make sure it didn't leak? This actually skews the results. This does present a problem. Quality control would randomly pick an item to test, regardless of when it was manufactured or how. Also they sent this tent incomplete with no tent stakes. Whether this tent leaked or not, the results have to be thrown out. They know that Luke will test this tent and that many would-be customers will be watching. That's my take anyways.

To be fair, if they really hand-picked the medium tent for you, I guess they’d clean it up and make it “presentable”. My guess is that this is like a showroom or returned tent, and they simply didn’t want to give away another brandnew tent. But anyway, good on you for pointing it out.

I just want to add something.... Just wanted to add a tips for any tipi tent users. There are adapters available that allows you to connect two poles (must be longer for obvious reasons) to make it a A-shape to eliminate center pole to maximize usable space. There are some 3rd party companies that makes it and some tent manufacturers make it for their own but tipi is a tipi, they all work.

I wonder if the medium tent sent was one of their modified prototypes. Doubt they updated and mass produced already. It's probably used due to it being a first run and sent it for free testing. What's odd is that there are plenty of locales in Japan where they can do extreme weather testing. Anyways, I know you talked about wanting to visit Fuji, and that is a bucket list item, but make sure you two hit western and northern Japan. Places not visited much or talked about because they're not Tokyo or Yokohama.Prefectures like Akita and Aomori have historic castles and some awesome forests and mountains to camp at.

Have you ever treated a tent with water proofing? I would set a new tent up in the yard on a hot sunny day and soak them with water and let them dry then spray Campdry on them and let them dry then put the fly on and do the same thing as I did on the tent and never had water come in. We camped with a couple that had the same tent as we did but was not treated and had a thunderstorm that night and the next day they had there bedding hanging out drying from the leaks where we didn't have any leaks. I still do it to this day.

Yep, exactly. Every new tent I've owned I've used Campdry on. Done exactly the way you described. Result? No issues. . And, I lived in a tent for 5 years when I managed a very rural campground, hit it with Campdry - once a year. No issues. I also made sure to really soak the taped seams to be 100% sure they didn't leak.

It's shape means you're literally sleeping inside a loudspeaker, lol. And the run-off. I've had tent run-off so severe around the bottom that it soaked underneath like a lot of you may have had. Ty for the tent update review, Luke. I unfortunately have to agree w/ you that most likely they hand picked that med size tent for you. Unavoidably it seems that is the cost of your fame. Like it or not, to the outdoor gear companies you are now on their radar, and if they get a complaint about their products and they feel they have to do this to skew a good result, then they probably are not a co. most should do business with anyway. Add to that the fact that the large tent leaked as well (Even WITH seam taping on it). This, to me, shows a lack of quality control Imo that can’t be ignored. The high vent on the large tent also shows a lack of logical problem solving when designing these tents as well. For me this co. is a hard pass. P.S. Maybe you might have to have Susie buy the tents for you or even better someone, such as a close friend to buy them, so as to not tip off companies like this as to what you are doing. Again this may have to be the cost of youtube fame for you and your family to get the honest results you and all of us watching wish to achieve.

Luke, do you think that the tent they sent you the small one was maybe put up by the company and tested before they sent it out to you? Either way it doesn’t prove that they solve the problem. They may have solved the problem with a tent. They sent you if they tested it prior to sending it to you. About to get a larger tent and missing parts really doesn’t make the company look good.
@markthomas2436 Жыл бұрын
I like the colors of both tents. I like the idea that you can stand up inside a tent, and change your clothes. I do think you made a great point about the height of the vents being a problem. Again, teepee tents have the same problem that most trail tents have, and that is that the damned pole is all the heck IN THE WAY. You find yourself bumping into it, trying to avoid it, hassled BY it, and everything else. Another thing is always the question: can you carry this tent in by putting it into a backpack? In other words, IS this a backpacking tent? Yes, or no. If not? Then it inherently competes with every big tent in the world that you could pack into a trunk of a car, and take CAR CAMPING. Now, get this. I like both backpacking and car camping. But if you ARE gonna car camp? Why not bring a big tent? Weight is no longer a big concern. Those tents are too heavy to backpack IN with, so yeah... they compete against all your other tent options out there.

They absolutely 100% tested that tent in the rain just to make sure it wouldn't leak before sending it to you. @TheOutdoorGearReview I am going car camping in Ocala National Forest the end of January and the weather should be in the 40s at night and 60s during the day. It may even get a little cooler than that. My 8-year-old tent leaks not only from the top but also from the window areas. I was thinking of getting a 4 mil extra large tarp and covering the tent with it (top and even the windows) and then putting the rainfly on top of that with most likely no Gap. I would raise the tarp above the windows when it's not raining. It rains pretty much every time we go there. Is this a really bad idea? I don't think there will be trees in the spot that we're at so I can't hang it above. Should I just buy a new tent? I'd rather go the tarp route because it's so much less $ and the tent still is holding up otherwise. I'm not too concerned about the temperature during the day inside the tent. I'll have the windows open. More concerned about night time temperature and the condensation.

I can't understand how some companies don't fully inspect and test their products before making them available to the public. The key to becoming a long standing and trustworthy company, one must ensure that they make quality products and spend the time and money from the start to make that happen.
@phasmata3813 Жыл бұрын
There is no good excuse for not testing a design. However, when you're mass-producing a product, fully testing each individual item is difficult. There's a level of inspection that is possible, but there are defects that will get past, and it is just a numbers game and a matter of good customer service after that. As he says here about the large tent's leak, it is probably just a defect that no one would have found until actually subjected to rain, and that is a forgivable defect provided there is good customer service that follows. Many other products that perform poorly on this channel, however, are not so forgivable as the flaws are inherent to their design and would be detected immediately by taking the design out and testing in in real world use under all the conditions it should be expected to perform for customers. Now, the exception to the forgivable flaws is that forgiveness depends on the flaws being minor and uncommon. A pattern of flaws in everything being produced is indicative of shoddy craftsmanship and is right up there with allowing design flaws through.
