Since you mentioned not being able to find Tamiya Extra Thin, consider this your reminder. While Tamiya Extra Thin is a 50/50 blend of Acetone and Butyl Acetate, the Tamiya Airbrush Cleaner is a 50/50 blend of Butyl Acetate and Acetone...and less per ounce. So you can keep a bottle of the Airbrush Cleaner on hand to either refill your Extra Thin or to thin your Sprue Glue.

weirdly enouth, the silver/gunmetal metallic colour metallic air paints are spectacular. The brass and gold (and to a degree the copper ones) are complete ass. ended up getting replacements to confirm this, its very strange Might be because I'm using brush, but Vallejo say they are fine with brush so idk

I'm mostly GW contrast (For airbrush + speed(ish) painting) - just because I like how most of them perform. But other paints I always have on hand are: 1.) Vallejo gun metal - so much cheaper because I paint a lot of metal sci fi terrain. 2.) A big pot of off-brand cheap bright silver - as above 3.) Vallejo magenta fluo - some basic OSL effects for lights, lenses, etc 4.) Pro Acryl bold titanium white - no explanation required. 5.) FW/Daler Rowney white ink - like Geoff said - you can highlight the white 😂 6.) Then obv. all the speciality paints - dirty down, colour shift, etc.

'MIG Productions' and 'AK Interactive' were actually companies started by Mig Jimenez and several partners. 'MIG Productions' was a business partnership between Mig and Mig's first wife, but he had to give the company up as a part of the divorce settlement so his ex wife got the entire business. Mig was then approached by Alex Vallejo to start 'AK Interactive', but Alex Vallejo screwed Mig over as he didn't give Mig a share of the business and he was only ever 'employed' by them even though he literally spear-headed ALL of their product designs - this is why Vallejo and 'AK Interactive' share certain product names. Mig then went on to create 'AMMO by Mig Jimenez', and he's thrived ever since. Random fact; Vallejo paints were exclusively used on original Hanna-Barbera animation cels for the likes of 'Yogi Bear', 'Scooby-Doo', 'The Flintstones' and 'Wacky Races'.

So happy that Geoff mentioned the tamiya extra thin smoothing method! I'm an obsessive scalpel user for removing mold lines, so I've always been a huge fan of using a teeny bit of Tamiya extra thin to smooth down the rough scrape marks and it's a total game changer! Also very handy for smoothing roughly drilled barrels or potentially filling slightly 'gappy' joins in a plastic mini too!

I use mainly ak because when I was looking to get replace my army painter warpaints I found the 14 colour Jose DaVinci starter set at 12.99 which surely has to be the best deal on the market for mini paints. The near on 70 quid difference between that and the pro acryl main set made up my mind for me right quick. I use Vallejo metal colour copper and dark aluminium as either the main metallic on a thing or as a base for a selection of others that are nowhere near as good paint wise but I like the colour of.

I have AK and Pro Acryl and mainly use the AK paints. I really prefer the finish, I haven't ever had issues with it through an airbrush either. Maybe it's the way you're thinning it? I use a thinner mix I got from Vince Venturella in one of his hobby cheating videos that is 75% thinner and 25% flow improver which thins but avoids drying the tip of the airbrush. For me, I'm now trying the ak metallics, but I'm pretty partial to Two Thin Coats metallics

Majority of my paints are Citadel, simply because of "stick with what you know", and that I can buy them easily from local shops. I do own some Vallejo paints as well, however. I was given some by a friend who didn't need them anymore, and bought a couple of pinks for my Emperor's children. The pinks I got because there weren't any in the Citadel range that quite worked for me. The "step child" paint is Vallejo's Black Metal - I use that ALL THE TIME for base coating silver parts. I love the blackened, dirty look and it makes the highlights really stand out.

What I have the most of is hands down ProAcryl. I think they are just very well rounded for being a newer line. Good metallics, lots of colors, they have transparent and fluorescent and primers and mediums. I like really matte so it works for me. Their black is iffy because it is charcoal and matte so I have a bunch of vallejo model color black, I have some AK which I like but it's so similar to ProAcryl that I don't need more. I have army painter speed paints and then I have a handful of other vallejo colors for more satin options and a bunch of inks and tamiya paints for air brushing.

But I really miss the shiny black that Tamiya had, as it worked great for painting the brims of caps and also sunglasses and things like that. I would still use some of the Tamya paints I think,. but all the ones I had has dried up ages ago,and now it is much easier to find Citadel paints as I don't have any hobby shops close by but I do have a Warhammer store an hour away.

I started with Tamiya paints which I never really liked and thought it was me but turned out they were bad for hand painting. When I got an airbrush I saw what they were really made for though and their lacquer range is even better. I have always used Tamiya grey primer and Humbrol varnishes. You do have to be very careful when mixing types and brands as its quite easy to ruin a model. But you can always use different types to your advantage as they may not reactivate one another in cases where using the same type might. I started with military vehicles so a rattle can Tamiya lacquer base coat and acrylic details worked pretty well for a good few years. I use MIG then Ammo enamels and oils for washing / weathering. I fell in love with Citadel paints when realising how easy it was to brush paint with them vs Tamiya. Always used Tamiya extra thin and extra thin quick since it was available as its just so superior to the needle glues. I do like Citadel for its quick and hassle free paint system along with it being non toxic. My wife hates the smell of lacquer and doesn't complain at all about Citadel stuff so there is also that.

Great video guys! RE: Scale75 paints (discussion around 17:00 ish) - if you were using the Scalecolor line, they use a gel based medium whereas other paints usually use a water based medium. So they definitely work a lot differently from other paints - though I personally haven't had any issues using them over other paint lines. I have had nothing but trouble with those Scalecolor paints. Aside from needing far more layers than other ranges, I remember finally building up a lovely colour on the new Apothecary Gravis marine’s pouches using Red Leather. It took ages and then the next day started flaking right off! Incidentally it was over a Wraithbone primer so consistent with Geoff’s experience here. I have some other gel-based paints which go on fine so really not sure what’s going on 🤷🏻‍♂️
@PocketPigments
@PocketPigments 5 ай бұрын
@@kealyj very strange! I use them all the time and haven't had any issues at all. I've used them over multiple brands of both rattle can primers and airbrush primers without any flaking or any other problems. Is it possible that they're not mixed up enough? They are very thick paints so I found I really needed to shake the bejesus out of them with a ball bearing inside the first time I used each paint. Afterwards though they were good to go. I find that most of their colours have very high opacity (cover very well). They are also very densely pigmented so they glaze really, really well. Also I've had a much easier time wet blending them over some other acrylics - not sure if due to the gel medium or the slightly longer drying time over other ranges. But yeah, really strange...perhaps it's an issue specifically with Wraithbone? I've used it in the past and always had problems with it - have known others that have had issues with it as well. Other than that, my best guess is just needing to really shake the hell out of them? Sorry you've had such a crappy experience though :(
@kealyj
@kealyj 5 ай бұрын
@@PocketPigments It might be the mixing, I found that no matter how much I shook the bottles there was always some sort of gel medium layer on top of the pigment when I put it on the palette. I'm guessing it should be homegenous. I have a load of mixing balls but never think to put them in, I must give it a go and see if I get better results. I mean, I seem to be in a minority about them so it's likely user error as opposed to everyone else being wrong!

I started using Citadel Paints and now I feel I'm stuck with a bunch of them because of my army. I'm slowly moving towards Vallejo mainly because, living in Spain, I have to say that Vallejo and AK are SO. RIDICULOUSLY. CHEAP. You can get them for around 2,10€, while Citadel I think is 3,60€. And that's regular paints. Metallics can be around 5 and Constrast paints more than 5€. Army painter, when you find them, are around the same price as Citadel. And something like Two Thin Coats are in the 4€ range.

If you want to make holes for drilling barrels/magnet prep easier, I recently bought a carpenters awl (metal spike in a handle) to make a hole to guide the drill and its working nicely. One more tool on the desk but it feels less dangerous than doing the same with a modelling knife.

Do like me some AK paints & their painting & modelling books are some of the best. Only mistake I’ve ever made buying paints was to buy a whole set when I started. Big waste of money. Better off just buying the paints you need for each project as you go along.

I find AK goes through an airbrush fine IF you use their thinner and flow improver. Normally 1 part paint, 1 part flow improver and 2 parts thinner but this depends on the colour. the Intense colours can take more thinner

Do not be shy about adding MUCH more water than that. Also, it only really needs to water with some flow aid in it. Water is the solvent in acrylic painting after all.

There's basically only two companies that make paints anyway. HMG paints in the UK and Vallejo in Spain. There's a few others, but the vast majority of all paints are made by those two companies under different labels. The only real choice given to painters is dropper bottle or pot.

Having worked with Byron, and stocked AK paints for Element, yeah, the range is too damn big... The issue as I see it is they're competing with two different Vallejo ranges, both model colour and game colour, combined into one. I actually prefer AK for all base painting, glazing, and stippling on sci-fi and fantasy miniatures. I think they just have a bit more vibrancy and richness than the Vallejo, although the latter are far better for military and historic modelling, and colour match specific camouflage patterns, national uniforms, etc. I don't think AK can drop the latter as they have a heavy focus on military/ historical modelling, but I do feel they could split the range or at least reduce it based on colours which don't actually sell very much. I found, much like Tamiya, and Scalecolor, there are specific AK paints which will sell in large quantities, whilst others sit on the shelf for years.

Mainly use Citadel Paint but do get from Vallejo when it’s a paint/colour GW doesn’t do. Sky Blue, Metal Azul and Goblin Green are examples however I find it frustrating when you see painting guides that use several ranges mixed together. Not everyone can afford multiple ranges and it put me off following those guides. Worcestershire Sauce Wash would be a good replacement for Nuln Oil 😅

There's an STL jig for drilling Bolter Barrels, can't remember who does it though. Alternatively I've just switched from No10 to No11 scalpel blades, the 11's are perfect for starting a drill hole. Honestly I've been happy with Citadel Paints 9 times out of 10, because I'd rather have a thick paint that I can thin down when necessary than a thin paint that'll take 3-4 coats to get the same coverage. Plus there just aren't any places stocking the competitors less than an hour's train journey from me, even though I live in a reasonably sized city! So the only alternative is to buy online and not see what the paint looks like until it arrives, meaning I either get lucky (ProAcryl) or get burned (the old Army Painter warpaints).

Me with my Scale75 paints: "guess I'm an also ran then..." 😂 I'd say about 80% of my paints are S75, i own both the ScaleColour and Fantasy & Games ranges. I then have the GreenStuffWorld chameleon range, which are metallic flip pigment paints, their Filter range, which add a metallic flip over the top (purple over the top of yellow for example), and their Fluor range. Then I've got the Darkstar washes. Then for basing purposes, I've got a number of the AK Interactive diorama tubs, things like moss texture, wet mud, muddy puddles etc

Darkstar Molten Metals have all the metallic colors you'd ever need, including a medium, plus the four new washes are really good. Blackened Bronze is a great base for any metallic color. Instar Paints Alpha Range only use pure pigments in the 17 colors, Pure White and Pure Black are great, Varnish+ is matter than AK, and Water+ is the best acrylic thinner
