Cherry is such a lovely figured wood. You did this piece proud Gary, wish that I had decent size chunk myself.

Thank you Colin. There are so many types of cherry and it is fun to see what each has to offer. We have one decent sized Cherry tree but the birds get to the fruit faster than we can. Had two trees and took one down. But it was very small. The wood did not go to waste as it was big enough for the smoker. Thanks for watching, Gary

I fell asleep the first two times I “watched” this one but the third try was definitely worth it. My only disappointment is that everyone else said what think already! Cherry is my favorite wood to look at for some reason and even for firewood just I love the smell. I thought your video was interesting the whole way through I just had a really busy week and was very tired the first two tries😅. Thanks Gary!

Thanks so much Barry! I fall asleep during our favorite TV shows so I get it. I think not getting much sleep has something to do with me. I agree with all the uses of Cherry. Number one on my list is a nice little turning. Then it makes great smoking wood for anything from salmon to a turkey. The shavings look good sprinkled on my wifes flower gardens. Hope things settle down for you and your not so busy. Take care, Gary

I like the shape, color of this bowl as well as the grain design. Cherry is just basically beautiful and the shapes you are making enhance that. The cactus bloom is beautiful. Looks like some type of Cereus cactus. It is interesting how close our weather conditions are so often considering how far apart we are. We are having mid to upper 90's too. We are getting a lot of humidity from the Gulf now which does not help and the air today is absolutely still. It is so dry here right now that at least I do not have to mow. There is nothing left but dirt and rocks. Haha. Have a good day.

Thanks Travis. For sure Cherry 🍒🍒🍒 is a beautiful wood. A friend gave the cactus. It is a start from a cactus his grandmother gave him many years ago. He has kept it going for years. Gary , you really had me going there in the beginning . But , you surprised me with the wings you put on this gorgeous piece . You really got the finish down on this one as . Awesome ! I too, am turning a Cherry piece and I thought we may be doing the same thing . Phew ! You didn't . I am doing a sort of hollow form from almost the same size wood . I too am having to deal with a knot . lol . Scary . lol . Anyway , thanks so much for sharing this video of this awesome piece . More heat next week for us again . We hope you have a great ( cooler ) weekend and a wondewrful week ahead . See you next Friday .

Thanks Jon! I sort of had the wings in mind. Just had to get turning and see how it would look with the one side much lower. You will have to let me know how yours turns out. We have cooler weather in store next week but you never know around here. Take care, Gary

Sometimes it's like a kid at Christmas. As you peel the wrapping back to see mother nature's gift . Very pretty! Thanks Gary.

Thank you Dave. Funny as I turned this piece I was thinking the same thing. Unlike a present not even the person who gave it to you knows what is on the inside. That makes me laugh as when I was a kid my sister and her husband got me a special gift. My mother was so excited (she knew what it was) she said "Hurry up and open you coat" She loved Christmas. Our kids now always say that at least once during Christmas time. Brings back good memories from those old days. Thanks for that memory, Gary

A very nice turning, I keep practising, but I've got a lot more practice before I get anywhere near as good as you.

Thank you very much Mark. Well every time you turn you are getting better. So just keep turning and have fun. I find that fun is what helps me improve. I guess they work together. I look to learn something everyday. Thanks for watching, Gary

I absolutely love the design on this one, Gary! I think it kind of blooms just sitting there! I'm sure it was a lot of extra work turning this because of those cool wings but, from my point of view, totally worth it! Such a great finish, too! Love the backyard cactus! Do you bring it in for the winter? Such a beautiful flower. Great job all around, my friend, keep'em coming! 😊 Phil

Thanks Phil! The sanding on the inside took 4 times what it normally would. I just had to keep at it and it was well worth it. Will bring the cactus plants in soon. The love the hot weather and do not do good when it cools down. My friend gave them to me. He got the original from his grandmother at least 30 years ago and has been getting starts off it for that long. Thanks for watching, Gary

Really nice bowl Gary! This whole video was like Deja vu for me. I did a shape (unsuccessfully) a few months ago and cracked it from a bad catch I got using my carbide on the inside bottom. I ended up turning off the live edge on the top, otherwise it would have looked a lot like yours.😢

Thank you Jim! I would say try another. The very bottom can be tricky with any tools. Especially if there is not much room. Thanks for watching, Gary

I like the sealcoat because it is de-waxed shellac and I can put any finish over it. I rarely use regular shellac any more, I just use multiple coats of the sanding sealer if I want a shellac finish.

I use the seal coat when I spray lacquer on. I feel the lacquer levels much better. I normally do not use the seal coat with wipe on poly as it soaks in very well.

That was a good turning, Gary. Nice form. I have a piece of burr oak I've always thought should be a bird's mouth vase. Thanks for braving the hot shop to complete this. I have a question I have to ask, especially after seeing another youtubers reach for carbide when I was thinking it was the least attractive choice. In both the other instance, and your stubborn knot, I thought the least challenging tool would be a nice gouge with plenty of downward pressure toward the rest so those curlycues don't even know there was an interruption in the cut. Whereas with a scraper (less so since yours was at a sheer angle), I'd be more concerned about the edge going too deep and taking enough to cause a catch. Anything you see me overlooking to understand the physics and reasoning going on? Could be just downright personal preference and comfort, too.

Thank you Jay happy you liked this one. As far as what I chose to cut to the bottom I feel the the small carbide was the best choice because the knot was off to the side and was much harder than the wood. With the carbide I could leave it flat and not worry about going from a softer material to a harder material like the know. All I can say about if you missed anything is to try both and use what works best for you. That is what I did. I went from a sharp gouge that was not doing what I wanted to the carbide which worked much better. Not sure if that makes sense but is the best I can say based on your question. Thanks for watching, Gary
