Cherry is such a lovely figured wood. You did this piece proud Gary, wish that I had decent size chunk myself.
@ThePapa19473 ай бұрын
Thank you Colin. There are so many types of cherry and it is fun to see what each has to offer. We have one decent sized Cherry tree but the birds get to the fruit faster than we can. Had two trees and took one down. But it was very small. The wood did not go to waste as it was big enough for the smoker. Thanks for watching, Gary

I like the shape, color of this bowl as well as the grain design. Cherry is just basically beautiful and the shapes you are making enhance that. The cactus bloom is beautiful. Looks like some type of Cereus cactus. It is interesting how close our weather conditions are so often considering how far apart we are. We are having mid to upper 90's too. We are getting a lot of humidity from the Gulf now which does not help and the air today is absolutely still. It is so dry here right now that at least I do not have to mow. There is nothing left but dirt and rocks. Haha. Have a good day.

Thank you Dave. Funny as I turned this piece I was thinking the same thing. Unlike a present not even the person who gave it to you knows what is on the inside. That makes me laugh as when I was a kid my sister and her husband got me a special gift. My mother was so excited (she knew what it was) she said "Hurry up and open you coat" She loved Christmas. Really nice bowl Gary! This whole video was like Deja vu for me. I did a shape (unsuccessfully) a few months ago and cracked it from a bad catch I got using my carbide on the inside bottom. I ended up turning off the live edge on the top, otherwise it would have looked a lot like yours.😢

I like the sealcoat because it is de-waxed shellac and I can put any finish over it. I rarely use regular shellac any more, I just use multiple coats of the sanding sealer if I want a shellac finish.
@ThePapa19473 ай бұрын
I use the seal coat when I spray lacquer on. I feel the lacquer levels much better. I normally do not use the seal coat with wipe on poly as it soaks in very well.

That was a good turning, Gary. Nice form. I have a piece of burr oak I've always thought should be a bird's mouth vase. Thanks for braving the hot shop to complete this. I have a question I have to ask, especially after seeing another youtubers reach for carbide when I was thinking it was the least attractive choice. In both the other instance, and your stubborn knot, I thought the least challenging tool would be a nice gouge with plenty of downward pressure toward the rest so those curlycues don't even know there was an interruption in the cut. Whereas with a scraper (less so since yours was at a sheer angle), I'd be more concerned about the edge going too deep and taking enough to cause a catch. Anything you see me overlooking to understand the physics and reasoning going on? Could be just downright personal preference and comfort, too.
@ThePapa19473 ай бұрын
Thank you Jay happy you liked this one. As far as what I chose to cut to the bottom I feel the the small carbide was the best choice because the knot was off to the side and was much harder than the wood. With the carbide I could leave it flat and not worry about going from a softer material to a harder material like the know. All I can say about if you missed anything is to try both and use what works best for you. That is what I did. I went from a sharp gouge that was not doing what I wanted to the carbide which worked much better. Not sure if that makes sense but is the best I can say based on your question. Thanks for watching, Gary
