Simple Strip HST block quilt using 2 1/2 inch STRIPS! 8th in our series to use leftover strips!

Eighth project in a series using 2 1/2 inch strips to make scrappy quilts! This pattern was designed for a jelly roll but leftover 2 1/2 inch strips will work just as easily!
This pattern does call for some additional fabric for the background. It can be just one fabric or a variety of fabrics that are the same color. Look for a tone on tone or small volume print to let the strips be the star of the quilt. I needed 1 1/3 yard for the baby quilt you will see in the video. The pattern calls for 2 1/4 yard of white fabric (along with the jelly roll) to make a 66 1/2 inch by 66 1/2 inch quilt top. This pattern is easy to enlarge or make smaller! I do mention some alternate color way ideas in the video.

I've challenged myself to do a new project each month using only 2 1/2 inch strips from my scrap buckets. I have always saved leftover strips from projects and cut up small leftover fabric from yardage into 2 1/2 inch strips and put them in a bucket for some "future" project . The future is now! It is time to tame the scrap bucket and use up these strips. I'll always have a scrap bucket of strips because I'm constantly adding to it but I want to get it down to just ONE bucket instead of three...make that seven after the "GREAT SORTING"! This series will last until I'm down to one bucket. Let's be honest, it will take at least 2 years to use up enough strips to make a difference! If you press your HSTs before you press them open, you only have to trim two sides rather than all four! Great pattern and great technique.

Such a great use of scrap strips! A quick tip I use to make sewing rows together is: get that top seam to point up & the bottom one down to nest them that first set of rows, so much easier! Hope that helps someone out there in KZbin land 😎.

what a great way to recycle scraps. Years ago a friend of mine retreated then boxes of material that was going to the dump. Ten boxes had all been dumped. There are so many clothes that could be recycled. One of my projects with my material that was given me, I made 13 Pillow cases to a needy family of six.

I'm SO looking forward to the tub full of black prints. I think it would be cool to do a design (like 9 patch, or a star) on one side, and then alternate 2 1/2" wide, and 1 1/4" wide strips for the backing. Yes, I know, only crazy people craft their own backing fabric.

I used your idea to use strips for one side and a background for the other of HSTs. It didn't look quite right with your layout so I changed it to pinwheels. If I had more of a scrappy strips selection, I think I would have been fine. But I was using a strip set that only had 3 colors. I need to pull all of my leftover strips together - they are scattered everywhere at this point - to try this one again. Love your videos! Looking forward to the next in the series.
