We had planned our wedding and had already sent out invitations when we saw a house we wanted to buy. So we had a quickie wedding in the chapel, bought the house, moved in, and had our wedding and reception on the planned date. So the same pastor married us twice within two months. Worked great. 38 years later, we celebrate two anniversaries every year.

Bullshit. I've literately been with my girlfriend for 8 years. We've lived together for about 6 of those 8 years. We're very happy with each other; there's no need to bring a government contract into it. I own my house. She still owns her own house and rents it out. We each know our household work and financial responsibilities. We don't share a bank account. We don't share debt. We don't have both of our names on anything, which means if one or both of us does ever decide to break it off, it's simple clean, and no courts would need to get involved. It also doesn't mean we have any less love or compassion for each other. Now kindly stop telling other people what they NEED to do with their lives.

@@phillips9945 I did this back in the early 2000s - our first house was a fixer upper in a 50 / 50 formal business partnership because we weren't married (or even engaged at that point & had separate finances). Worked out fine, we got married 3 years later and now have been together 25 years. Best decision we ever made given that many of our friends bought their first homes in their mid-30s - rather than their early 20s like us - and they can't believe how far ahead of them we are financially due to living with small / no debt that whole time, and just saving up for things and doing them as we could afford them. Sometimes we lived in a dusty dump and it took us 13 years to finish renovating our first house, but the journey was worth it.

3 States have covenant marriages. Prior to entering into a covenant marriage, a couple must attend premarital counseling sessions "emphasizing the nature, purposes, and responsibilities of marriage" and must sign a statement declaring "that a covenant marriage is for life. Do you have a simple marriage or a covenant marriage?

For those in the back: It's not that you cant, it's that you SHOULDNT. Im sure you and your fiance are madly in love and cant imagine life without them. Great, happy for you both. But it's extremely messy if things go south for any number of reasons. It's fine. Just keep living in the apartment or whatever situation you are in. You dont need to rush into getting a home together. If you are spending the rest of your life together, you can wait until you are married and financially ready for a home and the costs that come with it.

Just go to court house, get a marriage license. Go to restaurant, have a reception there, everyone pays their own food bill. Take money saved, buy a house together. Better to live in a house, than spend on a wedding. Go on a honeymoon together, save up your money. Save for your future, don't waste money on a ceremony that last 15 minutes to say "I do". So true! HGTV has distorted the reality of homes, don't fix what isn't broken. Live in a safe, warm, healthy environment. Not breathing off- gassing for years from NEW paint, flooring, cabinets, carpet, etc. Fix things as you go through your life together, not all at once, don't fix what is perfectly fine. Love each other, that is what is important. Not a grey on white interior design

Double step-up in basis Stepped up basis is a tax benefit that allows the value of an asset to be adjusted to its fair market value at the time of the owner's death. However, when an asset is owned as a joint tenancy, only the deceased owner's share of the asset gets the stepped up basis. This means that the surviving owner's share of the asset retains its original basis and may be subject to more capital gains tax when sold.

My husband and I bought a house (major fixer upper) during our engagement period in 1999. It was 9 months of work but we were a team and rejoiced at each projects completion! I learned that my husband was not only a good businessman but a first rate carpenter, too. The finished house was beautiful, we got married in the local church and had a lovely reception in our newly renovated home. It turned out perfectly.

Dude needs to quit watching HGTV. I've seen these shows, particularly "Property Brothers." Please. No way is that house getting redone while those two guys always looking like spit-shine Ken dolls. When I see them in dirty ripped clothes, drowning in their own sweat and blood, hair all matted and stuck out in 50 directions, THEN I’ll believe it. Until then, I call BS on the whole fixer-upper bit. Unless your DIY is sponsored by IKEA, get married and buy a nice, pre-done house.

The house I live in now is a rehab. I also had ideas of making this house my own or whatever. I had to replace a roof, install central ac, replace all the windows and doors. Windows didn’t close and doors where not hurricane proof and blah blah blah. I remember scraping the old tiles from the floor. The cement dust went everywhere. I had my nose 👃 clogged with dry buggers. Never got to the popcorn 🍿 curling because we lost steam and time and just wanted to LIVE in our house not work on it. Still hate the popcorn ceilings 6 years later.

Marriage is an awesome deal for women and a terrible deal for men. Even after they are married, there is literally nothing stopping HER from one day announcing that she's leaving. She will take half of everything and if they have kids he will be living in someone's basement. 50% of marriages end in divorce and of those, 80% of divorces are initiated by the wife. Therefore as a man, you have a 40% chance of your life being ruined. Would you invest in something with a 40% chance of losing everything?

My divorce cost me a fortune so how did marriage help me? It didn’t. If you are married, the law tells you how to divide your stuff. This is the main point on which I differ with DR. Marriage is a horrible situation for the more responsible party. Maybe with a rock solid prenup that says each person keeps what they earn. Otherwise, never. Don’t act like divorce is a walk in the park. It’s horrible.

You do NOT want to start with a home that needs serious "fix up" to be comfortable. Sure, the idea of painting, recarpeting, etc. is fine; real work is a mess and if you were doing it, you would come home from work each day and work another 4 hours on the house. Trust me, my first home was basically in decent shape but needed a few things...and that was work. I recently had professional repairs after storm damage, and that alone was a pain...and I didn't have to do it; I just had to let people in, deal with their issues, etc. As to her "special day," you can get married now and have a nice reception in 6 months...or whenever. Best thing I heard from my daughter was that she had spoken with her intended and let him know that she'd do whatever he wanted, but SHE didn't want a fancy big deal--she was happy with a courthouse wedding with about 10 of their closest family + 2 friends....she wanted a "nice" dress that she could wear for other things later...and if possible, the money that might have been spent for a fancy wedding to be used for either a nice honeymoon and or more of a start on their home. And they have each been saving for a downpayment on a home since before they met each other...and both living debt free, separately at this point,
