This is great! My friend, Erica, is a clothing designer in Portland, OR. She has a high-end boutique. When the store closed, she and her seamstresses started making masks. They ended up getting so many big orders from commercial businesses and from individuals, that she was able to keep her seamstresses employed and provide benefits for them.

Thanks Simon - your example of waiters switching jobs to packing food/doing online orders reminds me of what an enlightened union leader once told me: "I'm here to protect WORKERS, not JOBS." He was referring to the fact that jobs may change, but his goal was to keep his union members (workers) employed and adaptable with the right skills.

I love What you’re into and what you stand for Simon but you are very simplistic in this interview, we are talking about human behaviour on a scale never seen before in recorded history, people and councils painting distance gaps for people to walk in, children living in bubbles in the classroom they’re not allowed to play with each other, sitting on tables on their own… This is not the same as after World War II because yes they were changes, companies went out of business but people could still go to bars, people could still frequent people could still hug shake hands and be a human

I can't believe so many kooks are commenting here and getting so many likes. All this stupid paranoid conspiracy stuff, and they think the ones who are prepared to make a sacrifice for the common good are the fools. Look at countries like Australia and NZ which had proper pandemic response and populations who accepted the inconvenience of lockdowns and restrictions (plus genuine economic stimulus for the people). We're back to 'almost normal' now, and the reason is very plain. I celebrated Christmas with my family with no fear of illness, and I'm going to a three-day music festival over new year's, completely approved by the health authorities. Because we have had no community transmission for over 6 months. But Americans would prefer to whine about small inconveniences and imagine massive micro-chipping conspiracies, egged on by their idiotic "president", and drag the horror out. Selfishness and greed will be their downfall.

No one alive has dealt with something of this scale. It's not so much that change happens and we must adapt-we know this and change is inevitable. The issue here is the change happened very fast, almost overnight, and spread across ALL aspects of life from physical health, mental health, social lives, work lives, etc... That's a lot for any person to take in and adjust to.

I personally don't think you can compare this to coming out of a world war [WW2]. I agree with you on a level of the fact that many companies/workers figured out they could A) Work their original job from home B) Do something entirely new from home i.e. online. Live events/meeting in person is part of being human. On a related note, If we don't stand up for these basic rights then we could lose them. Not cool. Remember we always have the right to protest in person or to petition, don't let them fool you that you don't. Think about that next time they try to spring ROUND 2 of CROCK-Vid on us.

Infinite mindset is spelled as tomorrow, longterm, or next life in the major world religions. In Islam it's called "akhira", literally meaning "the other" often used for the next life, in contrast to this worldly life which is called "dunya" that literally means "nearby". So it means that instead of shortterm thinking, it's better to have a longterm game, which is dubbed infinite game in Simon's vocabulary. One verse of Quran says "let a soul look for what it has put forward for tomorrow".

There is going back to normal as long as we don't listen to those telling us that there is no going back to normal. You, nor anyone, gets to tell me what normal is. Normal is a different perception for everyone. I will go back to "my normal" and look at those who allow this to change them and feel sad for them as I go about my normal day. I had to stop this video less than 2 minutes into it and move on to something else that isn't gonna tell me how my life is going to be. I choose that.

I will never take the personal freedom that I enjoyed where I could go to the movie theater, restaurant, beach, or party without wearing a mask or social distancing before the pandemic for granted again, but like many others, I still want that back, and I think that while we should wear a mask and social distance during a pandemic, we should return to normal and move on with our lives once the pandemic is over. THEN is where I believe that we should return to our personal freedoms and liberties that we enjoyed before the pandemic. I don't believe that any personal freedoms before the pandemic should be limited AFTER the pandemic by any means.

I fear the biggest casualty of the new way we do things is a further loss of human to human interactions. Mr. Sinek has already spoken about the addictive nature of cell phones, and how they discourage personal contact. I fear the social distancing philosophy will only make that worse.

Exactly. For your "safety". The government is using your safety to control you with fear. Here in New Mexico, we have 2.5 million people. Only 253 have died and 99% were over 65 WITH UNDERLYING CONDITIONS. We are locked in our homes because of a 0.00009% death rate. Dude... What a psyops

Or maybe it makes people realise the true value of face to face interaction since they've been forced to give it up completely. Maybe "online sucks" and "Zoom wasn't the same"is what sticks in their minds. I don't think anyone knows, but it's possible!

I think it will make us savor and appreciate the smaller amount of in person interactions we actuality do have. Thousands of years ago human beings were not exposed to the high amount of other human beings that we are on a daily basis, at least in the big cities, and at least before this pandemic. We now have the chance to slow down, to choose our relationships more carefully. This I think can be a good thing.

Social media has done the MOST damage to human to human interaction. It is a blight on human civilization greater than covid will ever be. Most people will not "realize the true value of face to face interaction", they have become accustomed to interacting via social media, and real world venues that foster face to face have gone by the wayside even before all this virus stuff. We have entire generations now that online interaction is 'normal'. I don't think there is any hope for humanity until the internet goes away.

When a job, a relationship, or a way of life ends, people often ask themselves, What am I going to do now? The answer is always the same: something else. I have no fear of what's coming. I know I will figure out some way to survive. And there is always the possibility that what is coming will be better than what I have now. That's happened to me before. Good luck to all.

But let's not overlook the serious tragedies many will face because of this.

Its September now. All my favorite restaurants closed for good here in New York City. I have lived here for over 30 years. My rent, and expenses have shot through the roof. After this pandemic, the new normal of NYC isn’t going to be the same, nor something we want. We are moving to Fairfield Connecticut. They didn’t close down their restaurants, and we can get a much larger place, with train access to NYC when we need to. My wife and I have adapted working digitally from home. We love it. We aren’t chained, like before, to stay in the now hostile place that NYC has is turning into, and only getting worse with Bilazio embracing of destructive policies. Not to mention Cuomo, who will be raising taxes. Its just not worth it anymore. We work too hard. Adapting to a new normal that brings you peace of mind, and happiness is a good thing. ❤️

Love the concept. Something I’m curious about though is your examples make it seem like innovations inevitably lead to old, tired companies being overtaken by the agile, adaptable new comers. The challenge with that idea is that we always analyze the winners and losers from a hind sight lens. When businesses are in the real shuffle, things aren’t nearly as evident. There are plenty of businesses that have the greatest technologies and innovative thinkers who go out of business because they don’t know the fundamentals of business: demand, supply chains, cash flows, etc. Think about MoviePass for example-a hugely innovative idea, changed the movie industry in some fundamental ways, but the large theater leaders just offered their own memberships and MoviePass ran out of investor money. To relate this to this current economic downturn, I don’t think it’s helpful to simply say, our country has gone through hard times before and now businesses just need to adapt. There will be a lot of businesses that fold because the economic pie has shrunk tremendously. And maybe the reason why one business survives and another folds is because the one that folds had just upgraded its computer systems rather than holding on to savings. The concept of infinite games inevitably lead to huge ambiguities. It seems like to me, as a life principle, the key is to think of what is the best next move right now because those darn black swans take all of us by surprise when they come. I’d also love to hear your thoughts sometime on the trade-offs we make in the sake of convenience. You mention Netflix taking down Blockbuster and Uber out competing taxi cab companies. A single Blockbuster video store had more variety than Netflix’s entire library. Granted, they might have only had one copy of some titles but you had more options. Uber drivers don’t get certified nor offer the option of calling ahead for a specific pick up time. I guess what I’m getting at is aren’t there other values that some societies value at certain times that shift that give advantages to certain companies? Maytag used to be popular because their appliances claimed to last forever. Well jump ahead a generation and we want the newest trending appliances so longevity doesn’t really matter. People used to value public transit because not everybody had a car and you could read your newspaper on the train and drink your coffee. Now most people drive and most of those who take transit wish they didn’t have to. If a company is built on certain core values or a “Big Why” what happens if those values aren’t valued by society anymore? Thanks for your dedication in producing books. I’m in a second draft of a first novel and so I have grown to really appreciate writers who get their works to the finish line.

Very thoughtful questions there buddy. I don't have resolution to them, though it seems like ultimate failure of any given system is inevitable, be it a company or product or a strategy. I guess that's due to complexity of the world.

Alpha 119 that is not what he is saying. He is talking about the passage of time which changes all things. No one has ever been able to go back to anything, ever. When you turn 90, you simply can’t return to 30. We will survive this, but we will have to adapt and things will be different. Are you really making the argument that you prefer death to change? Really? If so, why?

yeah, adapting to this is not correct. They are making us into a "hive mind", do as everyone else does. Individuality is at risk. Keep in mind everyone, over 100 million people will die from hunger from the shut downs, hundreds of thousands will die by suicide, and so many jobs gone adding to the mental instability. I don't enjoy this guy encouraging to accept it.

While I agree with your overall message there is one big difference and that's the time-line. Historically, people and businesses, had a lot more time to adapt, before they went bankrupt. A few businesses have been able to change course and survive, but many are simply not structured to shift that quickly. Arguably, many should have already been making that shift anyway, such as big retail. They could see the rise of Amazon. Other segments will take a nose dive, because there is limited demand for their products, while the economy struggles to recover. This pandemic is a second slap down, right on the heels of the 2008 financial collapse. It is in a time when the definition of middle class is being rewritten. I think it is an over simplification to suggest this is just another bump in the road. It remains to be seen if the world comes out of this better or worse. Early signs are the one percent are going to become even wealthier, while everyone else slides further in the opposite direction.
