In their book, 'Map of Hope and Sorrow,' co-authors Helen Benedict and Eyad Awwadawnan trace the stories of five refugees trapped in Greece's brutal refugee camps.
Helen Benedict is a novelist and journalist. Her previous books include 'The Lonely Soldier: The Private War of Women Serving in Iraq', and 'Wolf Season'.
Eyad Awwadawnan, formerly a law student from Damascus, Syria, is a writer and poet currently living as an asylum-seeker in Reykjavik, Iceland. During his four years in Greece, he worked as a cultural mediator, translator and interpreter for various NGOs.

That is a price Commie Chris is prepared to pay. I never understood the logic behind spending trillions over decades on bombing the Middle-East and right at the point where Islam becomes saturated with hatred for all things Western, opening Western borders and inviting the victims of the West's crimes against humanity into our homes. How could _that_ possibly come back and bite us in our a$$es? Hedges is a buffoon.

Yeah , people think is a joke. But when you see the young faces victims of grape you understand that you have to care for your people too. This agenda only destroys everyone. There is no war in Syria or anywhere else in the middle east, nor Iran, Bangladesh, Egypt or North Africa, or Albania; none of them are refugees, and protected by inter national laws They are migrants escaping whatever economic problems they see their country faces, and we have no obligation towards them. I have in front of me a photo print published on the TIMES newspaper of 38 adult able body Africans( no women or children) standing together appearing as refugees, waiting to be processed. Controlled immigration has always existed especially between European countries and it good for every body. Chaos serves no one.

@@stephenlock7236 What cases of Europe interfering in what countries do you think have produced this? Most so called refugees I see are not from countries where Europe has interfered in any way in the recent decades (maybe apart from sending humanitarian aid), as far as I can tell. It's mostly just migration. And then you also see quite a lot of disrespect, such as "refugees" not following the rules, for example in public transport, which is quite outrageous.

Constant migrant flows into Europe will benefit no one, including those already settled. Pressure on infrastructure and society in general will only create problems for everyone. Mono cultures do not bring cohesion, they manifest division. The prognosis does not look good. People should be encouraged to develop their own lands, a collective response from all communities throughout the world to assist in this effort. Europe is not treasure island. Most will experience a basic life, different to what they may have been told, this will breed frustration and probably resentment, already witnessed as they live within their own cultural sphere. Help and assistance must be undertaken in their own countries, amongst people they are familiar with.

What about when it is life or death, and the basic idea of protecting your family. What you suggest is an ideal sitution. But it does not seem like reality for people frantically trying to escape. Listen to what he said. He is does not want to leave his country. Would you? If you are safe and sound where you are, it is easy to make these "recommendations." When basic needs and life is threatened, all of your recommendations go out the window.

@@cupajoy8498 your post is based emotion rather than rational. By your logic anyone experiencing hardship should be given sanctuary. There are billions of people in the world experiencing hardship yet chose to stay and try and to build a life in difficult situations. Running away is not the answer and will not solve the problem. How many millions do you expect to be given sanctuary? 3 million 5 million 10 million, somebody will be disappointed. Europe cannot accommodate billions of people. Remove that emotional chip and apply some common sense. Europe is becoming fragmented, this is not sustainable and healthy, we have a duty to protect our homeland, our ancestors whom have fought and died so we can live demand it.

What about countries like Saudi Arabia, Emirates, Kuwait and Brunei, these are rich countries and under populated and moreover, most of the refugees from Middle East, including Syria share the same religion, and cultural as opposed to Western countries. Why are these people not going to these countries. These countries need workers, and had to hire thousands if not millions of workers from other countries. I am pretty sure if these middle East refugees were to settle to these countries, they would be fully employed in no time, as opposed to many of those who settled in Western countries had to live under generosity of the host countries at least for sometime.

That’s why you have grassroots gangs of people who are fighting against the big mobs such as government of the day put there by the imperialistic corporations led by the US and its allies such as the military industrial complexes e. g Raytheon, Boeings , Aero Dynamics etc whose aims is to promote wars for their gains and those who suffer are common people like you and me. The least we can do is to educate the general public who have been so brain washed by our Murdoch controlled Medias through their propagandas that we ourselves have been so oblivious to in the past and campaign for non western interference in other people’s countries. Let those people decide for whatever governments they want as long as the majority of the population are being cater for.

I know this first hand, because of working with the Police, Justice and NGOs as an interpreter. Hindi, Bengali, English and Castellaño. These asylum seekers were from Pakistan, Ukraine, Syria, India, Bangladesh and certain west african regions. Given Chris Hedges has utmost respect in the realm of political discourse and capitalism - Helen and Eyad are making money just like the people who are working in those Camps in Greece. However horrible, the refugees still do and want to cross over into mainland EU. Pathetic one eyed viewed - there are many more camps in Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal? I have seen this video on Chris Hedges' channel and while I do feel sorry for the refugees( according to the UN there are 108 million of them not 84 million), it is unfair to claim that Europe as a whole is waging war on them by refusing to let them in. The fact of the matter is the the Europeans when it comes to welcoming people from other continents have been the most generous on the planet. Over a million sub saharans have been allowed into Europe in addition to the 1 million Syrian refugees that were allowed into Syria once the civil war started, not to mention all the other immigrants that Europe has welcomed over the last 60 years. The fact of the matter is that the governments of Europe are already struggling to look after their populations, unemployment is a serious issue and homelessness, lack of education , lack of medical treatment are all on the rise. The population of Europe is currently 447 million, I am not saying that the europeans should not let anyone in, but letting in all these refugees will increase the population by 25% which will break the European government's ability to provide healthcare, education , housing and jobs. The result will be increased unemployment which will lead to more crime since earning money legally will be a lot harder and increased ethnic violence, the very thing that these commentators say they are against. Every country in the world has the right to protect their borders and wanting to do so does not make one racist. I have said this before calling people racist or falsely accusing people of doing things that they are not is a very bad way of winning people over to your side. On that note the pope criticizing border controls is a bit rich given that that the Vatican will not be remotely impacted by mass immigration and very little of his enormous wealth has gone into helping refugees. Not to mention that his organization is an organization that has turned a blind eye to rape committed by its' members and discriminates against woman and gay people and has served as a banking organization for organized crime. Finally many of these refugees who are not war refugees are in fact economic migrants masquerading as climate refugees and while climate change is a serious problem that needs to be addressed it's not as if it going to kill the overwhelming majority of these refugees within the next two decades. To ease and hopefully end the refugee crisis the following needs to happen: 1.The Americans, the Europeans and the Chinese need to forgive the Africans of all their debt and all associated obligations which include forcing the africans to privatize their infrastructure which has made the cost of living more expensive 2. The international community should scrap treaties that limit African countries from fishing in their own waters 3. Land given to large multi national corporations in Africa such as the Bill Gates foundation should be confiscated and given to local farmers 4. NATO countries have to stop spear heading war in Asia and North Africa 5. The international Patent system which allows multinationals to charge poor companies for essentials medicines needs to be scrapped 6.The world needs to stop buying Cacao products from West Africa and raw materials from the Congo all of which are produced by modern day slavery 7. The program to curb fossil fuels emission needs to be stepped up

Nearly all asylum seekers (migration) are directly due to western wars/ proxy wars and the global Fascist economic system. In the states we are especially hypocritical and every single NATO country that follows our imperial lead in waging these wars while completely ignoring the climate. This isn't a war on migrants so much as it is a global war on the poor! Through colonialism, slavery, war and pillage (capitalism) the empires of the world turned the global south poor. Countries with vast resources that the west raped them of. The majority are black and brown people that the western countries could easily write off as "backwards" or "savage," or add whatever racist term here ________. For centuries this has gone on and there is no way to ignore it anymore. No western country or NATO country has been "generous," except to rape and pillage the global south and now we are provoking WW3 with Russia and China. Two nuclear armed countries. Clearly, the people have control over their governments!? The original post was 90% correct but the 10% left out is the true solution to everything that is wrong with this world, over throwing capitalism. Now that the fascists are posting I want to make this 100% clear that the only true solution is a world-wide socialist revolution. If people in every country started to push back against their corporate owned far-right governments through a massive education campaign, by unionizing and organizing we can take back the world economy from the ruling elite but if we don't, it's all over! The human race is done. Our existential threats are: 1. Capitalism/Austerity (which creates fascism/ which blames and kills scapegoats like the Jews, immigrants and of course any one on the Left) 2. Ecological Destruction, created by capitalism and wars to continue capitalism. 3. The very real threat of nuclear war. One misstep and the human race is over and frankly it's a miracle it hasn't happened already! (Read Doomsday Machine by Daniel Ellsberg) Noam Chomsky would add the threat to democracy but the US has never truly been a democracy in the first place. The US was a fascist country before Benito Mussolini ever created the term. So here's where we are. What are we going to do about it?

those that remember history are doomed to watch the rest repeat it you know the ancient empires of Mediterranean and Egypt tried to fight a war on refugees when they experienced their climate shift they called them 'the sea peoples' and they came from collapsing nations across the Mediterranean and africa, as one empire after another collapsed and also went looking for food the 'sea peoples' ranks grew and grew till even ancient Egypt greatest empire of its age fell after a 100 year war against refugees/the sea peoples youd think knowing this wed pick a differnt path, but in reality free will is a illusion of complexity & lack of objective observation of our own actions as evidenced by our 'choice' to allow a new parasite to evolve to feed on us/pass us on the food chain even after we knew what was happening (covid19)

The UK is spending >£7 million a day to house illegal migrants in over 400 hotels across the country, most arriving via boats from France. They (the migrants) reputedly pay >£3000 to traffickers for the channel crossing, not in a desperate quest for refuge but in an attempt to attain their preferred end destination. I feel great sympathy for the children dragged along on such adventures but must roundly condemn any parent that would so wantonly endanger their own offspring when they have long since escaped the peril from which they fled. All the while the critical infrastructure of the nation (UK) is rapidly capitulating, scarce and over-priced housing continues to become more scarce and more expensive and the most vulnerable in society get overlooked in favour of the new arrivals. More of the same will only serve to punish those entirely powerless to address the ills of empire rather than those that profit from it.

It isn't that cut and dried. The hosting countries of asylum seekers are bursting at the seams. 90% of the arrivals are men between 18-40. Our crime rate has increased in the UK and Ireland and rising continually. 2 gay men in Ireland, beheaded and their private parts cut off by an Iranian refugee, their only crime was to be gay. Gangs forming to groom, rape and impregnate young teenage girls by mature men. Yet. we pay £7 million a day just in hotel room costs to ensure they have a warm comfortable place to stay, while the people that live here cannot afford to heat their homes. I am one of those of people. Greece were welcoming at first, but when 100 year old olive trees are set alight as they stand, destroying a mans livelihood because they want a fire to keep warm, rather than ask a man for wood or search for it. This video does not reflect both sides. People are leaving their own countries to escape this mass invasion of Europe. Our young people cannot find homes, because our government saves them for migrants. Many are coming for a better lifestyle, not fleeing persecution. They are economic migrants. So don't take a one sided story and take this as fact. The Greek island of Lesbos off the coast of Turkey rely on tourists to make money to feed their families, their economy was ruined. How can locals look favourably at these outcomes and be happy that boatloads of people come, every day by the 100's and even thousands. Look at what Italy has coming from Africa. It is not sustainable for the north of the world to accept the south in these numbers.

But I have experienced this type of cannibalism, as people try to survive from the economic recessions from covid policies. Those predators are at the bottom rung or trying to recover from their own crises in their own societies, with their own sufferings, debts, created by the bad luck and unfairness in their own countries, so they prey directly on newcomers. We live in vicious times. Vicious cycles of violence. The interference of governments USA/NATO all former colonial powers have responsibility in this. But how to remedy it all? The failing economy relies for it's workforce upon skilled and disciplined Immigrants and upon them not being demoralized by life in the UK which has been an attractive place to live because of it's mild culture of fairness and political stability but it cannot be for much longer due to a lack of a strong, unifying culture and I fear the country is ripe for an unenlightened, extreme authoritarian political takeover.

What is going on? Why the silence on the other countries? There are many other countries that could take refugees too Japan, China, Singapore, etc. Why don’t they? Fracking hell... just when you think the likes of Chris Hedges are maybe for real, he comes up with this devious, hypocritical anti Greek sheeple fodder distraction - oops, sorry - "report", regarding the "refugee crisis"... shame on you...

The largest military base in the Western hemisphere outside of the US is in Honduras. American agro-business competes with local farmers and only the elite class benefits from United Fruit slavery. Because there is no work, gangs of men roam the streets unable to feed their families, resort to crime. Hundreds of women and children walked the length of Mexico to the US to seek asylum. At the border they were called rapist and killers by president Trump and imprisoned and separated from their children. Biden, much the same... Someday, Americans may be climbing over that same fence into Mexico to escape the tyranny we nurtured. All due respects to your guests from Syria, they suffer the same cruelty.

No, I'm sorry -- ignoring the larger picture in this instance is unacceptable. Greece was pushed to the brink, and essentially did collapse in 2015, and for years, 25 to 30% of those under 25 had no job and no hope of finding a job. It is an EU neo-colony. When Greece elected a decent government, it was not allowed to govern. The banks decided policy instead. And then, the very same forces who did this also determined that Greece should be the stopping place for all refugees. Can you be serious? At the very end, Helen Benedict gives a nod to "a few nice Greek people -- they aren't all racists." Benedict, who has had her choice of living in London or New York her entire life, is going to pontificate to a people who still see no solution for their own predicament. She is the embodiment of petite bonne femme bien pensante. I'm not sure whether the Greeks are racist, but I have no doubt the English are. After all, they don't have to live there.

You are totally right. The operative word is "EU neo-colony"; the master starts these wars, the colonies supports them but the master's homeland is on another continent, protected by the ocean so the refugee problem is one the colonies should shoulder.

From my understanding, this is Greece's own doing by doing bad business with the sharks: IMF & EU, then they made this deal to stop refugees. Speaking of the bigger picture, the whole world is responsible for this, especially the USA, EU, Turkey & Arab golf countries, who decided to destroy a beautiful country like Syria. I saw nobody speak the truth and confront those bloody / resource thirsty monsters, as always a small number of factors are selected to be blamed, the most stupid being blaming the refugees themselves.

@@mustang19ms In Greece, a very small number of neoliberal political leaders, with support from the US/EU of course, took power and indebted the country, leaving the people with the bill and no way to escape it. You probably know how debt peonage works. What you say about Syria is undoubtedly true. I use Greece as an example for obvious reasons -- it was the victim in a "war" that never got hot, a "war" that was conducted with paper.

Freedom is fought for, not something to run from. A civil war is a horrible thing, but free western nations of people fought for there freedoms. You need to fight for your country not run. You should have joined with others, picked up arms and fought. Safe places are made. When you go to another country adopt their laws and customs. Learn their history, values and laws. Be thankful and productive. First generation are tough. My grandparents who were new to america had nothing, but didn’t complain. They lived meal to meal and knew things would get better with each generation. When there are thousands coming in chaos comes. I understand anyone fleeing war in Syria. But what does Europe have to do with it? Syria does not border Europe. That is why one does not flee from war to Europe, because the flight has already ended before that. The Syrian was a refugee but later became an illegal migrant. I also believe that he is a nice person, but the migrants are far more criminal than usual in the host countries. That's a statistical fact. And it is also a fact that due to the massive male immigration in some European countries there is a blatant lack of women among the young. No local man wants additional male competitors for housing, women and later perhaps jobs. Competitors that he also has to finance. This is not accepted anywhere in the fauna.

Do you seriously understand that Turkey is not going to accept them, nor Greece? They will go where they can in order to eat. Do you understand that? Do you also understand that the refugee crisis in Europe, brought about by your infantile and arrogant regime change wars has in turn given renewed power to the European far right? Why thanks, Hillary, thanks Bush and Obama, thanks a lot. I live in Europe btw.

Of course, you have to meet certain requirements, such as an income to be able to support yourself or the necessary schooling and professional training. Also: It's not about the overall crime rate compared to before, but about the relative proportion of migrants. And this is a multiple of the local population. We may both have different views, but I don't oblige anyone to do anything they don't want. But the advocates of migration oblige me against my will.

Nevertheless, with only 9 million inhabitants, after 100,000 illegal migrants in 2015 and many more since then, around 200,000 migrants have been added this year. Hardly any other country in the world has taken in so many migrants in relation to the number of inhabitants. That would compare to if the US took in 7.5 million migrants just this year. It's enough for me and many of my countrymen.

What strikes me about Mr. Eyad is he calls Syria his "homeland". That phrase implies nativism. In other words he seems to be disingenuously arguing he should have a Syrian homeland but others not have a right to their own homeland. . Hedges at least seems morally consistent on migration issue but not Mr. Eyad. Do as a I say. Not as I do. Syrian homeland for Syrian nationalists..
