The frustrating thing for me, as someone who has read about Napoleon, his life, and the people around him, there is great material for a really nuanced take on the legacy he left behind. On one hand, he certainly was a man of the enlightenment era. He introduced some very impressive reforms to French society and law. Elements of his Napoleonic Code are still in place in the legal system in France today. Our modern understanding of Egyptian culture comes from his campaign in Egypt (and no, he did not blow up the Pyramids. They were over five miles away from them during The Battle of the Pyramids.) He brought scholars, scientists, anthropologists to study the culture. At the same time, he was a man who seized power through military force. He was egotistic, which proved in many cases to be his undoing. He invaded Spain due to his own arrogance. He wasn't above forcing countries to his will. He also legalized slavery in the empire after it had been abolished in the French Revolution. There is plenty to dislike about him. There is so much more to Napoleon than just what Ridley Scott presents here. He was a brilliant military leader and politician. His troops worshipped the ground he walked upon as if he were blessed by divine providence. They carried his eagle standards into battle like religious relics, simply because they were touched by his own hand. At the same time he was brutal, arrogant, and to put it simply human. He is one of the most fascinating characters in history, and with everything he did both positive and negative, his story, as well as the story of those who surrounded, such as Josephine, Maria Louise, Marshal Davout, Marshal Murat, Marshal Ney, Marshal Lannes, and so many others, deserves to be heard. I think for me, what really left a sour taste in my mouth before the movie even hit theaters, was how Ridley Scott reacted to historical criticism. Any period piece is going to have inaccuracies. You have to to form a proper narrative. But when historians criticize gross historical inaccuracies, and even lies, and your response is either "Get a life" or "Where you there? No? Then shut the #%@ up!) I don't have the best opinion on your work. As someone who has had to deal with deconstructing the misconceptions of history to the public, it rubbed me the wrong way. TLDR - Not a fan 😕

I'll give Ridley Scott credit for the battle on the ice, though. It's a fantastic scene rivaled only by Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby goofing around as they portray their characters' silly flirtations.
@tinmanbrigade730410 ай бұрын
It certainly is a cool visual. The shots from underneath the ice were particularly good. The thing I find funny and frustrating at the same time, is that while Ridley Scott is clearly trying to knock Napoleon down a few pegs, he inadvertently bought into one of Napoleon's greatest pieces of blatant propaganda. Yes it is true that towards the end of the Battle of Austerlitz, a number of Russian and Austrian soldiers retreated south over some frozen ponds. Yes it is true that the French artillery fired at them and some of the soldiers fell through the ice and drowned. But Napoleon is the one who played up the numbers of the dead, saying that hundreds if not thousands of soldiers were drowned by his artillery. In reality though, we have evidence that after the ponds were drained, only a couple dozen bodies were found. And even if there were more men who fell into the water, most accounts agree that the ponds were shallow, with men able to stand in them. Only the wounded were at greater risk of drowning. Again, I agree that the scene is visually stunning. The camera work is excellent and the effects are amazing. I just find it funny that while Ridley Scott is trying to present Napoleon as "not all that," he still perpetuates some of the Emperor's own propaganda. LOL😄
@thomasmuscat652710 ай бұрын
Not to mention the fact that the Napoleon actually used the dense mist on the battlefield to shield part of his troops until the right moment, which in itself would have been brilliant to see on screen. So it's not like Scott couldn't have kept more true to the Battle of Austerlitz without losing the sense of spectacle.

Napoleon was actually average to slightly above average height for his time. The reason why he gets labeled as short is due to English propaganda and the English/French measuring systems were slightly different. Napoleon also looked short because he always stood next to his Old Guard which had a minimum height requirement of 5'10 though most in the Old Guard were taller than the minimum height requirement.

I think a pretty good film that could've show the negative side to Napoleon would be following his last campaign before his exile. When everything is coming apart for him and he is trying desperately to save everything. You could see political intrigue as Talleyrand secretly conspires against Napoleon with the Sixth Coalition. You'd have a pretty interesting character in his second wife, Maria Louise, as she tries to secure a future for her son. You'd see how his marshals were trying to do their best for him, while also questioning whether or not blind allegiance to Napoleon was best for France. That I think would be a great movie, if not maybe multi part mini series.

This film is something alright lol, I don’t hate it but I was kind of expecting the Oppenheimer treatment for Napoleon, sadly disappointed lol, expectations too high ig

28:50 probably the best scene in the movie. out of the rough 20 billion people that have existed in this planet since that time, show me even a handful who had spent *A WHOLE NIGHT* with their lovers, doing nothing but *TALKING* things through, with an open heart. one, here.... anyone else? show of hands? no? keep paying for therapists and counselors then.

Still going through your fun reaction, but you've kind of hit my issue: This is a very, very long movie where stuff just happens. None of it matters, relates, or tells a story, it just occurs. Also, sweet mercy does this movie have no idea about history. Just truly, really kills me.

Love the reactions but should’ve done some historical research because some of the comments would be so different than they were.

Did you guys realise that after the baby was born it was the execution of the mother you could hear in the background?! I thought for sure that would be your biggest reaction of anything in the movie...

Was that before or after the 101 gun-salute for the birth of their son? And how was it possible for Marie-Louise to survive her son by 15 years?
@Crazeyd0g10 ай бұрын
@@sebastianplenkers2093 Is that what it was? I thought I definitely heard screaming before the gunshots. I don't know how long she lived in real life. In the movie it looked like the reason for the Russians turning against France.
@sebastianplenkers209310 ай бұрын
Yes, it sure seemed that way due to the “disconnected” story-telling. But Marie-Louise returned safely to Austria after Napoleon was exiled.

You guys should watch Waterloo (1970) as a palate cleanser. Before CGI and Hollywoodized scenes, Waterloo is even better than this disappointment.

I loved the movie, me and my friend found it hilarious! It's literally such a harsh mockery of Napoleon the man whilst also showing that yeah, he was an incredible tactician. And God did some of his crazy egotistical moments really ring true to some guys I've known.
