Thermostat Installation : Honeywell FocusPRO 5000

Well my 8 year old Honeywell RTH7500D thermostat decided to fry on me, so i invested in a new Honeywell FocusPRO 5000 non programmable thermostat. this video is of my adventures of doing so. i had no choice but to change it hot on the fly, the new stat is battery free for life!

24V doesn't pose much risk for electrocution. We use 24V in sprinkler systems and touch them all the time. Dont feel anything.Its like touching a battery terminal. Good install!

HVAC wise, 24V is dangerous,if the C and R wire touch, it will violently fry the transformer inside the unit, C is similar to the Neutral on a regular 120V outlet, the R is 24V hot and stays hot all the time, the C wire powers the thermostat, its difficult to explain in a comment, i'll make a video on it one day, but 24V is harmless and wont hurt you, but will hurt an HVAC system if C and R touch.

Yea thats what I was trying to say! Doesn't hurt humans. It frys stuff on sprinkler systems too if you ground them together.

Nice video! Those thermostats are easy to install. Heat pumps have more wires because of the Aux heat and reversing valve. Looks like your goodman will be in heating soon. Keep those videos coming and keep up the good work!

With mines it’s not lighting up green anymore and it doesn’t read what the temperature is in the house. It does show the numbers on the right and won’t turn furnace on. Is there a way to reset it?

Nice job Mike! Nice thermostat and nice installation! I keep wanting to install a Honeywell Prestige thermostat with the Redlink internet gateway, but I still can't part with my good ol' White Rodgers/DICO 1F86-73. It's a good thermostat, been around for close to 15 years now and still working great. Oh, it runs on batteries too, I don't have a C wire coming from the furnace to my thermostat. ;-)

hey Matt! the Prestige is a nice thermostat! wow! 15 years old and still going strong! the C wire is a stat saver! so far i like the new FocusPro 5000, its easy to read and the buttons are easy to use. and no more hold button! set it and forget it! thanks for the comment Matt!

If your not smart enough to be able to turn off the out side unit then maybe you shouldn't be touching anything that has a Battery or Power period, even my wife knows the out side unit runs off the house fuse box. And actually the furnace also has a low voltage wire that runs to the thermostat that really controls everything from there and telling the difference between colors of wires isn't tough for somebody that isn't color blind.

Nice install I have the Honeywell vision pro WIFI love this stat. now you said something about a blue wire some installers will use the blue wire for common or the black it's all in what color they want to use. in some cases you have to use the batteries if there is no C wire, but when I install one I use the C wire. Most of the stright cool and gas furance don't have a common wire so the battery is used to power the stat. But if you can find a black or blue wire to use as a common it will work without the batteries.
