12,000 member is so much! Screen shows almost 14,000 then in almost the next breath I’ve never been good at math! Omg I so relate! I think Watcher will bounce back but it’ll take a very, very long time. And they won’t be as large as they could have been. They’ve got a very close fan base who really related and loved them and it hurt them very deeply with this shock that made no sense. There’d be people introducing their kids to the channel, and that’s unfortunate for them those people won’t anymore. They’re comment sections talked about Shane and Ryan totally about stuff off topic of the show. They just loved them and it was very easy to see.

To answer questions: They have 25 employees (mostly friends and family) in a spacious downtown LA office. For a KZbin channel that inconsistently uploads. Shane just had a $55k wedding. EDIT: Apparently $55k was just the cost of the VENUE. I hate it here. Steven is renovating his Hollywood condo, brags about driving a Tesla and his $300 matcha machine, and all of HIS shows on the channel involve traveling to expensive places and eating good topped expensive foods. In fact, in the same video they announced everything is going behind a paywall, they also excitedly announced that they had hired TWO MORE PEOPLE to revive Steven’s old “worth it” show from Buzzfeed. Ryan is the driving force behind better production value for already overproduced content. They mismanaged money and have expensive tastes and wanted the viewers to foot the cost of the bill entirely instead of billion dollar corporations who have the money and are practically throwing it at them. They didn’t lean into their Patreon because they have to pay Patreon a portion of the subscriptions. This is greed and business mismanagement plain and simple. I’m not at all impressed with an apology and backtrack that probably would not have happened if they hadn’t lost 100k+ subscribers and almost half of their patrons in 3 days. “We’re sorry we called you poor and almost made ourselves poor. Here’s the crumbs a month later, plebs.”

Apparently it was $55k just on the venue alone🙃 There was sometime during the pandemic I realized they weren’t at a office/studio filming but were in Steven’s really luxury looking home and that’s when I realized, oh they’re Rich Rich. Just to add to your observations/facts, I totally agree it’s business mismanagement and that the follow up video was basically the minimum necessary to save a ship they sunk themselves.

Unfortunately according to economic reports coming out recently technically to even be considered middle class you have to make a yearly income of about $1mil(in America) with the new poverty line(meaning if you don't make this much you can't live by yourself and afford the basic living requirements) being $45k a year. It does fluctuate based off location but those are based off national averages. The economy is poop and obviously most are in poverty class or lower class. So does $68k a month actually cover staffing? A quick Google tells me a living wage in LA is at least $96.5k annual salary, and if we assume that all staff gets health & retirement benefits then you need to add roughly 30% to that number to get the cost per hire, so that's $125.5k times 25 full time people is $3,137,500 per year. So if all 25 people make a base "living wage" salary to be comfortable in California, they need at least $261,450 per month to cover labor costs, plus whatever they need for supplies, spaces, website maintenance, production, equipment, etc. I don’t have a good idea of what those production costs look like monthly but I can't imagine it's minimal!

I was a Watcher fan but this got so… weird and horrible. First the goodbye video felt like I was getting kicked out because I’m poor, and that feels super gross. Then the fans are attacking each other on other platforms, and this whole company/ channel and fandom was like a sinking ship that is also on fire and everyone was screaming about why it happened and I just jumped off and observing from afar. So I am curious how much of a cut these guys get from revenue and how many employees they have and how much they are paid, do you provide insurance and retirement plans, ect? Im a Watcher watcher. Have been since Buzzfeed for Ryan and Shane's shows only. If anyone looked up their first video for how they made Watcher, they literally say they left all the financial stuff up to Steven who has 0 experience in finance. 0 experience in running a business. Why would they do that?! They could have saved a lot of time, money and backlash had they hired someone qualified to run their company's finances for them. The fact that they just hired 2 more Buzzfeed people (specifically for Steven's show) and he's been bragging about his lavish lifestyle for awhile now. Steven's new show is all about jetsetting around, eating really expensive food. There are 25+ employees now. Most all are friends or family members of the guys. Honestly, most of the Watcher audience was in it solely for Ryan and Shane. That's why most of the very negative backlash hit Steven. I will say that I resubed for now. I wont be going back to Patreon for them though. Not for awhile. This just felt so much like a bad break up. They gotta earn my trust and love back. lol

With the amount of free content across multiple social media platforms, I can't imagine how they thought putting formally free content behind a paywall was a genius business move. I feel that most people would just say, "That's sucks," and just click on the next video of someone else they follow that gives the free dopamine injection. While there is a increased quantity of followers/views for increased production value, there's a whole lot of content creators that have a lot of followers, but not the absolute best production value.

I mean, this is the strategy ScreenJunkies did with their Screenjunkies Universe, and Collegehumor followed with Dropout. Both successfully. Screenjunkies always had a production studio with several shows they built on KZbin, and their app included live and exclusive content. CollegeHumor built longtime audiences over the years with quality sketches and used their app to create hugely successful new shows while still uploading some of that exclusive content to KZbin to entice new subscribers. As the comments section expressed, Buzzfeed Unsolved was a show that wasn't based on live events, sketches, or game shows. It was 2 funny guys talking about unsolved cases. It didn't need a huge production, and people didn't WANT that.

It was a decent apology for KZbin, but that is because the standard is seriously that low. But they really ruined the magic and I wouldn’t be surprised if they would actually have to start making cuts. Sometimes you need to make cuts in companies! They chose to cut fans rather than cut coworkers.
@csailer2353

I agree. With running a commonly comes hard decisions and some of those hard decisions included cutting staff. It sounds like they have 25 staff. I want to know what they all do b/c as of now they are only putting out like 1-2 videos a MONTH. I can’t see more than maybe 5 people working on one video. And do Ryan and Shane not have a hand in their own videos? Or are they just online personas? I don’t even think the Try Guys have this much staff, they do work on their own video, they are lower quality and a bigger channel. They are all friends and know each other, they should have went to them for pointers. They’ve also collabed a number of times with the UK Jolly guys, a food channel. Low quality and from what I can tell just a few staff members. I think they grew too quickly and hired too many people too quickly, then plateaued. I do wish them the best but I don’t see this going well for them as it seems a large majority of their followers won’t follow them.

I hope I can attempt to fill some gaps from the IT perspective (cause you mentioned wondering about firing staff, etc.) - depending on their setup, it could be a lot of people. That UI (user interface) looks pretty slick. Without being able to dig into into the site itself, if they made it all “in house”, it could be anywhere from a team of 2-3 to a team of 15-20. They need a front end dev (to make it easy to use and pretty), a back-end dev (to deal with how to host all their streaming content) - throw in a business analyst or project manager (which they might not do, but I figure if they’re approaching their streaming site with the same level of professionalism as their video content, it’s not unreasonable), some testers, someone to manage vendors (like payment processing), at least a couple people on user data security (if they’re smart. Leaky PI is expensive), a legal advisor, yadda yadda. Add to that they mentioned being limited by KZbin’s features, so there’s definitely some unique features they needed built for this platform. The whole thing, to a techy geek with ZERO skin in the game (I have no clue who these guys are), it comes off like either asking your audience to fund your vanity project, or asking your audience to pay for you to get your foot in the door in the streaming game (at least investors get returns). Also - in case anyone thinks the “two clicks - they give up” is a new phenomenon and people’s attention spans are shot, it’s been a UI design best practice for probably 15 years. If a user can’t get what they want in two clicks, you’ve lost em.

I think people don’t realize that they’re getting tv personas, we don’t know them. Everyone blames Steven but Ryan and Shane appointed Steven as CEO. They’re a team. They all wanted this. I was there when they were on buzz feed. I was excited for watcher when they left buzzfeed…..that being said I wasn’t mad…..I just knew I wasn’t going to see them again lol. They stopped puppet history and some of their content was boring to me so I was already not watching as often. They don’t post THAT often. I watched for the dumb funny conversations between Ryan and Shane. Steven…..yeah no. I unsubscribed from watcher. They lied in the apology, they just wanted more money after mismanaging their money. Unrelated… Jaime…..that high note gave me chills ❤😂

Yeah I was excited for them when they left Buzzfeed and started Watcher as well. I was watching from day 1. I’m not a fan of the unsolved/ghost files shows. I like Ryan and Shane’s chemistry I’m just not that interested in ghost hunting. However I LOVED Puppet History and was sad they weren’t doing it anymore. I watched a bit of the drunk storytime stuff, but found Steven making bad drinks in there not necessary and pointless. I agree the decision was made by all 3 and I don’t understand the hate all piled on Steven, since it wasn’t a lone decision and they all had a say in it. I think this will fail and it’s all b/c they don’t want to let go some of their staff, which makes their production costs bloated and unnecessary. Sorry, but every company has to let staff go at some point, it comes with being a boss. I will miss them, but as they weren’t putting out much I was watching anymore anyway, can’t say I will miss them much. I will say since Jamie doesn’t watch them, she missed the reference to Weird and Wonderful World, another great show they stopped making.
