The second round was arguably better than the first round. There was really no way to go wrong with the first overall pick - both Shane Wright and Slafkovsky will be NHLers. Mesar with the 26th pick was risky and may pay dividends in the future, but the Habs left players like Isaac Howard and Brad Lambert on the table. I’d say their 26th overall pick was a more controversial pick than either of the second round picks. Owen Beck was a VERY safe 33rd overall pick - projects to be a strong bottom 6 centre. Lane Hutson was an absolute home run of a pick. With the 62nd pick, you’re not expecting a bonafide NHL star. But Hutson has all the skill in the world to be an elite defender if he can put on some weight. It was a great pick. Both second round picks were great.

It will be hard tho. No one will wanna trade that pick up especially if that team doesn’t think they will make the playoffs. I am praying for another bad season and that Florida has major injuries problems and falls out of the playoffs, maybe even down enough so they have a chance at the lottery. Great interview, bravo Tony. I like snake, he is not afraid of is opinion. And he sell them well (may be because i agree to most of it). That guy would be in the nhl scouting soon (wake up mtl). I have two questions for him. First one, talking of Joel Armia. Since he showed good stuff in last playoffs on a 4th line. Don't you think he should have a real tryout on one the two first line (he is big and have some skills too)? Second one, talking of Jonathan Drouin. You saw him play in Q, with and without McKinnon. Considering also, that most people (incluant S.Waite) say he need a new start somewhwere else. But is value is too low now to let him go. Let's say you have to give your opinion to St-Louis. In wich position, or situation you seiing him play. To regain his confidence, and reveil is full potentiel?

Ciao!

Also, this is the highest I’ve seen Connor Geekie on any list. Connor Geekie in the top 5 alone is nearly absurd, but to have him over Shane Wright is straight up disrespectful. Geekie is big - he’s not an elite centre nor does he even project to be a top line centre. He doesn’t really project to be a second line centre either on a contending team. You don’t take that type of player with a top 5 pick.
@MythicosQc74
@MythicosQc74 Жыл бұрын
"disrespectful".
@Tanmoy49
@Tanmoy49 Жыл бұрын
@@MythicosQc74 it is lol. Geekie got 70 points in 63 games with Savoie on his wing. Isaac Howard scored more with less potent linemates in the USNTDP. And to try and compare that to Shane, who although didn’t have a 1OA type season, scored 94 in 63 - and was with rookie linemates for half the season. Obviously the guest values size over everything else (hence why hes so high on Geekie, Gauthier, etc - and also so low on high risk high reward players like Hutson. Even his take on taking Warren over Beck was weird - you don’t draft a bottom 6 ceiling defensive defencemen with the 33rd overall pick just because he’s 6’5. In fact, you should never just draft for the sake of size. Look at how McCarron and Tinordi turned out. Beck with the 33rd pick is a solid pick for a player with great potential to be a 3C behind Suzuki and Dach. Not to mention an amazing 4C behind Suzuki, Dach, and whichever centre they pick with their (hopefully) top 5 pick next year (Bedard, Fantilli, Dvorsky, Carlsson, Yager). Simon has a really old-schooled drafting philosophy, and it doesn’t work anymore in today’s NHL.

I don’t know about Lamoureux in round one. Arizona must have a crystal ball or something because last year, I didn’t see anything from him that justifies him going in the 1st round. Sure, the kid is tall but for one thing, he’s really gangly and will need to beef up quite a bit. I saw him play and my first impression was that he looked awkward like he’s not strong enough for his big frame. I’m looking forward to watching how he develops now that he has the added motivation of having been drafted.

Out of those 3, Cauffield is the only one with good stats for a rookie player but I would suggest that he was not on opposing teams radar and he was not figured out until the series against Tampa where he pretty much vanished against a much better team. Gallagher and Byron were basically non factors in Montreal last run outside of some isolated events that make you think they were more important than they actually were. I still stand by my statement that you can't win it all with a team mostly build on small, fast forward players and the current management is in agreement with me in their draft choices and trades. Make no mistake, the Hutson pick was only just a value pick that will be turned as a blue chip asset in a future trade.

I think they went for home runs on skill alone and are aiming to develop hockey sense. Mesar has elite skating and shot, but similar problems as Drouin rushing and is small. Beck 20 pounds lighter than Danault but has a very good release that could project to 20 goals? Hutson we know - loaded with skill, needs to grow some more. And Slaf has very good hands and feet already, he doesn't have the polish Wright has and an arsenal of moves and movement away from the puck, but again they can show him that within our system and tailored to his style.

Both Galchenyuk and Kotkaniemi are NHL players. From the beginning they could play in the NHL against other pros they're at the right level it's not like they couldn't touch the puck. They just never met the expectations we had when we drafted them. Shit happens...

Hey Tony!! Please stop giving these haters time on your show. He is a typical French fan that will never be happy unless it’s a French player. He talks 💩 about everyone and just causes drama. You are amazing. Please don’t let these losers bring your show down. Thank you for everything you do. I think your the most entertaining and honest analysts I’ve watched.

Connor McDavid played 3 years in the OHL, Shane Wright has only played 2, Nick Suzuki played 4 years in the OHL! Simon said Wright is no McDavid! So lets compare Wright and McDavid. First two seasons in the OHL McDavid 120 Games, 53 Goals, 112 Assists 165 points! For Wright 121 games, 71 Goals, 89 Assists, 160 points, So at this point in Development Wright is a McDavid! Simon says Wright seems uninterested, He looked bored! He scored 100 pts this year! How many points could he get next year in the OHL? Don't forget Kingston was not close to being an elite team, Where Simon says Wright looked bored, Ya it was in the playoff where North Bay Destroyed Kingston in four games, Wright still had 7 points against a much better North Bay team! So the Habs picked Slafkovsky because he had a good worlds and because Wright had a bad four playoff games where he still had 7 points, No Kingston played North Bay and got slaughtered in 4! Then North Bay played Hamilton and got slaughtered in 4! Hamilton was an elite team' Kingston was a average team except for Shane Wright.

He seems to be a Bergevin type of GM this Boisvert. Looks for size over skill. Geekie is WAY to high on his list. He is a plodder when it comes to skating and at this stage of his career, he isn't changing that skating style and what did Colorado and Tampa Bay show? You need skill but most importantly you need SPEED. Tampa Bay isn't a large team and neither is Colorado. Makar is 5'11 and he dominated the playoffs. You can't fixate on size, you need skill and speed and that is what Montreal is aiming for. The fact that he projects for the playoffs and believes in size is wrong. He has a weird way of looking at drafting players.

You only have Makar in mind? Avs had plenty of big players who were skilled and could skate, far more than small guys. Mackinnon, Landeskog, Burachovsky, Nichushkin, Rantanen, Toews, Kadri. Boisvert is right that you need to prioritize big skilled players who can skate over small players who look good in practice but are nowhere to be seen when the heat is on. Just because Geekie is an unfinished product does not mean he is not worthy of a top 10 or even top 5 pick. He has the right type of physique, style of play and skillset to make it in the NHL, he just needs to improve on his skating. If he was such a lost cause, he would not have been drafted in the first round period. Even our pick is no guarantee to play in the NHL next season.

Saying Brad Lambert is on your No-Draft list. And being enamored with Conor Geekie as a Top5 pick and your favorite player of the entire draft… MANNNNN that’s not gonna age well 😅😂🤣 Brad Lambert might be one of the best players of the entire draft. And Conor Geekie is an absolute bust. Michael McCarron 2.0.

Tony, why calling Hutson a poor man's Hughes? I dunno man, calling people 'poor man's' is rather insulting and not called for. Maybe when people talk about media, this is something they think about. The guy was just drafted and already, he's getting insulted by you guys.

I agree with Tony's guest. The Habs should have drafted Noah Warren 6-5 / 225 pounds and still growing. The Habs should try to swap two prospects for Warren.
