Hi Steve, About 35 years ago while in between structured lodging I was working a second shift job, getting off at 2 am....I never camped in a parking lot at night. Instead I would go to an all night truck stop, have dinner, and some coffee, read the newspaper, etc....then about 8:30 in the morning I would find a busy store, and park in the middle of their parking lot, and hunker down for my daytime sleep in the back of my truck. Cars come and go all day long, and I never got the dreaded knock. I kind of miss that sort of adventure. Thanks for reminding me of good times.

That would actually be sad, cuz if Steve ever gets that well off where people just let him camp wherever, he might not be able to do this anymore. It would at least change the flavor of the show a little bit. It may not be stealth camping anymore. Altho that could be great for him, if businesses started inviting him to "stealth" near their premises, even offered him "incentives" to pick their place over other places, so long as he says nice things about their store and prominently shows the place and even offers directions on how to get there.. Just be careful what we wish for here, is all I'm suggesting.

@Blue Frog thank you for your kind words, and thoughtful reply! I am a social creature by nature and new measures affect my being on a deep level. I was probably already on the spectrum and find masks overwhelming at times. I'm lucky to have supportive friends and family as I look to be more with nature than with people. Ontario has a plathora of lakes and water systems and I hope to go and observe most of them. My goal is to drive coast to coast picking up others that decided to go out and explore their mother, and their home. It would be a school bus on monster truck tires. Called the Prairie Crawler 1... Why I enjoy Steve's channel and others like "my self reliance". They teach us how to get out and be with nature for little to no cost.
@largol33t13 жыл бұрын
Simple tip: if you're struggling through a very cold spot, takeout pasta dishes are a relatively cheap way to go. A pasta dish has a lot of energy for sustained movement. You're better off munching fettucine or spaghetti instead of a burger or other fast food. There's a reason why some survival food kits have a lot of pasta based products as the main dish...

I ran a large gas station on a popular travel route in central Massachusetts, and we had 18 wheelers and occasionally cars park overnight in the lot and we never paid any mind to it. We camped in our car/van while travelling around Australia and New Zealand for months at a time. The best place we found was at the boat launches. People sometimes go out and fish overnight or go out really early so it's not that uncommon to have vehicles parked there all night. Depending on the boat launch, they also have secluded areas you could camp and many have restrooms too. Just another interesting suggestion to try.

Watching you stealth camping in the car reminds me of when I was homeless, kind of, I lived in a Ford Ranger for two and a half years with my dog. Then my young son joined us for 6 more months. I remember the day I went homeless. Halloween 2016. I was 58 years old. I was terrified, but after I learned the ropes I think the experience has made me a more human human being if that makes sense. I did things that I never dreamed I would do. Not bad things, survival things. Really mostly before I became homeless trying to stay inside. I think that's why I enjoy watching you and Crazy Neighbor. My young son says Crazy Neighbor reminds him of me. I see it in you the human the man that knows. Thank you my friends.

Steve- you talked about a visitor center. That is got to be like a rest stop. My brother had that tap on the window to make sure he was alive sleeping at a rest stop. Quick question- Did the person parked up against the build stay there?
@billykennedy37503 жыл бұрын
In canada we are not allowed to sleep at visitor centres. They are kind of like a tourism office to show you around the area.
@rrpostalagain3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a tourist center is a little different than a traditional American “rest stop” on the freeway.
@alcoholic24123 жыл бұрын
A rest stop is just that. A place to rest legally for up to 8 hours. Visitor centers are a big no no
@mikebridges72943 жыл бұрын
I've seen rest stop/visitor centres when I was still in the US. I used to sleep at rest stops when I was driving between Ohio and Missouri (14 hr drive from near Ft Wood to Toledo). As long as I stayed out from under light posts, I slept pretty well in my little 1980s Toyota pickup. I drove to and from Toledo in 3 round trips, and I also drove that little truck to North Carolina and back to Missouri, and to Tulsa Oklahoma and back to Missouri 3 times, and I never had a single issue (even after my crazy ex-wife tried to sabotage it in front of a Sheriff's Office lol). That was the toughest vehicle I had ever owned. I hated having to give it up (had a mate that I gave it to in St. Robert/Waynesville Missouri, for a ride to Lambert Airport in St. Louis, the day I left for the UK 18 years ago. I bet that truck, depending on how they treated it, still ran today lol). Only problem I ever had was when a bastard broke into it, ripped the stereo out of the dash. It was when I decided to rent a hotel room for the night (of all bloody things)....I came out of my room the next day, walked down the stairs and I saw objects from other vehicles laying about, and car windows broken (how people sleeping close to the parked vehicles didn't hear all that glass shattering is beyond me), and I instantly knew I was a victim too, without even seeing it lol. THANKFULLY they broke into my truck without breaking my window because I left for a round trip to Missouri that day. I was steaming angry though, as they stole my new stereo and the big box speaker I just purchased days earlier, for the trip!! I HATE thieves with a bloody passion!! We travelled (my ex and the girls) travelled to many States when on Holiday, having to stay in some seedy places because every room in the decent places were booked (1 night in Memphis, we decided to get a room instead of driving any further, and just as we got settled in our room a HUGE Biker Gang pulled into the parking lot, apparently they rented several rooms, and for much of the night they were revving and racing their bikes, doing wheelies and drinking up a storm! My ex was scared she had me barricade the door with the 2 chairs, and I had to sleep in the bed closest to the door lol), and never once did we have a vehicle (we had an Astro Van at the time) broken into! The joys of travelling by vehicle lol.

Love the stealth camping reminds me of when I was younger and got kicked out of parents house and I lived in the back of my pickup the simple times. Just pick up and move to different places and worked all over the south. Then got ok’d enough to drive 18wheelers did that for ever and that’s camping all the time in ur truck. Keep up good camping stuff be careful.
