Hi TC just an observation, certainly not a criticism of your workmanship. Couldn't help noticing the way in which the truss manufactures had fixed/used the apex plate on the small abutment roof, in the very early days of gang nail trusses we were told that they ( the plate )should/must be fixed parallel to ceiling or rafter cord? . Pride to work etc etc maybe the 'bench hand' avoided qc check, just a passing comment have tooo much time on my hands with ongoing supply problems and long covid. Keep up the excellent presentation , practical and sound advice ,, thanks from an 'old timer'
@thetallcarpenter3 жыл бұрын
Hi Vic. To be honest, with regard the gang nail placement, I never give them a second look as their design and construction is purely down to the truss manufacturer🤞 Those nail plates always amaze me at how strong they are💪 Thanks for watching and your comment mate🤩

What angle were the lay boards cut where they meet at the top and how do you calculate what angle it is?
@thetallcarpenter Жыл бұрын
Hi Donal🖐I did cover the easiest way to find thus angle in my 'lay boards and valley rafters' video, but quite simply I just sit the uncut lay board on the main roof and 'slide' it down until it hits the ridge at the top and the rafter of the adjoining roof, and just run lay a straight edge on it butted up to the ridge and mark it👍 The top lay board cut is also the same angle as the jack rafter seat cut bevel. (when the saw is set to the main roof pitch and cut along a rafter along the seat cut of the adjoining roof) I hope that makes sense🤞Cheers Del
@donaloconnor3352 Жыл бұрын
@@thetallcarpenter thanks Del. That last bit is a head scratcher for me but scribing the angle like you said is very straightforward
@thetallcarpenter Жыл бұрын
@donal oconnor When you look at the bottom cut of your rafter, (the cut that's sits on the lay board), it has a compound cut on it. One of these angles is the seat cut and the other us created when you set the saw to the pitch of the main roof. It's THIS angle that will be the same as the lay board top cut👍

@@thetallcarpenter ace, I’ll watch that now. Out of curiosity is there a certain angle your ladyboard will be for the angle of the roof you are tying in to ? So for example if your tying in with a 30° roof your top cut on your lay board would be X
@thetallcarpenter3 жыл бұрын
@@17MikeThompson I think it would be a more complex set of calculations based on the pitches of both the main roof and the adjoining one🤯 I've yet to cut a roof using any form of calculations, other than rafter length, and have always used the direct measure approach as I find I get more accurate results, make less mistakes and is slightly quicker😎 Cheers

@thetallcarpenter3 жыл бұрын
Hi Charlie. I'm not sure what the difference is between those models. I know there is a big difference between the 350 and the 360, mostly the kind of nails and gas they use. I get on great with the IM350 as it uses readily and cheaply available nails and gas. If I was to replace it I would get the same again but with the Lithium battery😎 Cheers

Tbh I hate trusses. I get the time and money factor. I just wish they didn't exist. Roof cutting is my favourite thing to do and is truly a godly trade. In a perfect world I'd do nothing but pitching roofs. Maybe abit of concrete shuttering too. Abit of 2nd fix in the winter maybe. But roofing is my favourite. Not just because of the bugs bunny. Infact I tend to drop my rates if I happen to be offered an interesting roof.
@thetallcarpenter3 жыл бұрын
I absolutely hear you Kallum, and the older and more experienced I get, the more I tend to gravitate to more complex roofs as they really make you have to think about what you are doing🤯 Unfortunately I have to turn an awful lot of roofing down because I just haven't got the time to do it😩 I noticed on some of your comments on other peoples channels that you seemed a bit despondent with a few things at moment😬 Try not to let stuff grind you down mate🤩 Cheers
