Great review. It certainly helped in my decision making. In regards to your last point for TVs. The problem is that there aren't any TVs that do 4k HDR at this size. The smallest size they do is 40" which really isn't suitable for a desktop. I have been umming and ahhing about this monitor but I've decided to stick with what I've got at the moment until HDR is more commonly used. Or see next years offerings. The reasons why I was looking into it was because: 1. The monitor I currently have. 1080p 144hz 27" BenQ XL2720Z I don't play much FPS games now so the refresh rate isn't getting it's maxed use anymore, and I wouldn't mind having some nice eye candy compared to the 1080p TN panel now. 2. I have a PS4 slim but of course, it can't do 4k. I would need to upgrade to a PS4 pro to get the max benefit. And, that's more money to spend. 3. Upgraditus... I think it's only worth it if you have a single monitor setup using a PC and PS4 pro/Xbox one X.

How does this compare to the LG 5k Ultrafine that apple sells? Im not fussed about the 5k but really like the image quality of that monitor. The 5k Ultrafine 5k costs around £880 and the 27UK850 costs £400.

besides the 4/5k i think it is actually a better buy than LG UltraFine 5K (apple). Infact i bought two of LG's displays from apple (4K and 5K ) and a few reasons why i returned them back on the same day firstly, they'll always ever work only with mac. the 5k does work with other latest non apple devices though but still a hit and miss. The 4k version (sold by apple too) doesnt work even with older macbook pros (older than 2018) so if someone's got a 2017 model, the LG displays sold by apple wont work Secondly, apple's got them modified to USB-C only. So in case you're planning to use it with minidisplay port or hdmi or something (in case) you cannot because its usb C only and all other ports have been removed. IN apple store one of their employees saw how frustrating it was for me that i returned to their store so many times in the same day, complaining how it is not working on my older mac. I tried multiple adapters that they sold me on the same day too and did back and forth, home to apple store all day One of their guys recommended me to order this LG model online. Saying, it is way cheaper, it has same quality and you can use it with ANY device, including older macs if you need to or windows pc best decision. and i am using it now for more than a year i have no complains except for that its not truly 60hz when used over with older mac (minidp to DP cord) on its highest resolution but with newer mac or windows computers it works perfectly. the colors are fantastic, way better than older apple thunderbold displays i was using earlier. the matte finish cuts of the glare to some extent. I agree, 32" is optimal for cinema but up close all day long on a desktop 24" is perfect, even 2 of them but 27" good. Any bigger up close for of gaming for example had my sore neck all over the place trying to tract action. I like a tripple set with a 24" center and outside 27" in portrait

Confused between LG 27UK850 and LG 27UK650. Specs looks pretty much same. The only difference I can find is that 850 has USB-C and inbuilt Speaker (both features which I don't really care about), while 650 doesn't. What I really care about is the color accuracy being a content creator myself. Should I opt for 850 or 650? I'm confused.

Good review. In my opinion as long as monitors have low brightness, low color space, low contrast with IPS panels, and remain at 60hz, there is no reason not to hook up your PC to a 4k TV with a good game/PC mode for 4k/HDR content creation and consumption

oled as a technology is still flawed due to the unstoppable color shift after only a couple years of regular use. IMO wait for native 4k 3500 Lumen projectors with Dolby vision and 95% DCI-P3 color space. These should be right around the corner.

From what I have gathered about this display, it hits the mark on all those things fairly decently at a pretty reasonable price range considering.

As a media designer, I love the display of the iMac, but hate the price. Although I have a 144 Hz monitor, I personally hardly see the difference between 60 and 144Hz ... and yes I have set it correctly in the driver. And the LG 27UK650-W would be the perfect solution for me.

The specs on LG offcial website shows its USB Type-C ports only supports the speed rate of USB 3.1 gen 1 so I'm quite wondering could this port support 4K@60Hz for video signal output? 🤔

Check out the HP Z27 too if looking at this model, both support USB-C charging. Colour accuracy on the Z27 is excellent.

Just bought the 4k version of this without the HDR. The only problem I am finding with it is finding a USB type C cable that will charge and send data .......they just don’t appear to out there. I’m on to 4th cable in a week and I haven’t been able to find one yet. The cable that comes with it is a bit short. Any suggestions? Thanks PS thanks again for another great video

Hi Tom. Can you recommend a colour accurate 4k monitor for use with Lightroom primarily but some Photoshop use? I don't want to break the budget, so while Adobe RGB would be nice, I suspect that 100% of sRGB would be sufficient. I make prints so need the prints to match, as closely as possible, what I see on the monitor.

Hi Tom, could you provide some opinion on how clarity and sharpness of monitor compares to the retina screen of MacBook Air. I've purchased a dell 25 inch but the picture quality is quite grainy in comparison, even in its native 2k resolution. e.g. the letter J really shows the roughness. I'll return it and I am thinking about the LG.

I purchased this monitor and the second you turn on HDR on a Macbook Pro the colors get washed out. There is no option to adjust the gamma pure garbage everyone gives them good reviews. Yes it looks nice with HDR off but why spend $500 on a monitor with no HDR in 2021? Shame on LG & Apple for not fixing this.

Peak brightness is not as big a thing for HDR as is generally made out. It would be nice if you could put an OLED (at e.g. 300 - 500 nits) next to a 1000nit LED LCD and do a comparison of some HDR content to verify this.

This monitor is all you'll need for the xbox one X .I have the 650W version in 27in and believe me that it's perfect I dont experience any screen tearing and the image and response time is very very premium highly reccomended it and you shed like 250$ compared to this model.

Hi Tech Chap, Please could you compare this monitor to the LG 31MU97-B 31inch IPS Cinema 4K Monitor for similar use, I want the very best image quality including true colour just because I love high resolution images even though I am just a consumer but I worry the 17:9 aspect ratio will be odd when viewing Netflix, youtube and the like? I would have preferred this monitor with G-sync and high refresh but I have bought a separate monitor for gaming so that's not so much an issue. Your guidance or even better a review would be much appreciated.

I have just bought this monitor after the excellent review to take advantage of the USB C connection linked to my MacBook Pro. It would be a real plus to have some info on putting in an external USB C hard drive into the configuration and the any help on wading through the different USB C cable specs. The picture quality is as good as I have seen from a 27/28 4K monitor, It is used every work day and the brightness is great and the definition - especially with fine line work - is first class; never the intensity of the retina at 13ins but this is 27 ins and considerably cheaper than the LG Mac equivalent. When fully calibrated with the Spyder5Elite there is still high levels of brightness available and the colour match to the Retina is exact. The only downside is the USB C performance. The powered monitor does not put out enough power to keep my MacBook Pro charged when in heavy use with Adobe CC programmes. The MacBook charger I have on my 2017 model puts out 85W and the monitor only kicks out around 60W so it will drain the MacBook battery in under 4hrs when USB C linked to the LG. Also, when I daisy-chained my MacBook Pro to the external hard drive and then to the monitor, the monitor would not come to life without a restart. So if the Mac goes to sleep the monitor will not come to life on wake-up. I now have the drive and monitor cabled separately from the Mac for then to work perfectly together. But if you are just looking for a superb 4k monitor then you wont go far wrong with the 850-W.

Very interesting review, although I was a bit disappointed that you did not show the monitor being used in 90º-rotated "portrait" mode (like maybe a Microsoft Word document). I'm thinking of buying and installing a novel hybrid computer setup in my office. My primary workstation would be mobile: 2018 13-inch MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. My video editing and graphics station would be a 2018 6-Core i7 Mac Mini. I want to seek a deal on an eGPU so I could plug-in either the laptop or the Mini to two displays. (I want a hi-res ultrawide display preferably an HDR of 34-38 inches, plus a 4K HDR display (21-26 inches?) with 90º rotating capability for both video review and desktop publishing/page layout work. I want the eGPU to drive both displays from either computer so I have lots of video real estate for a variety of productivity, communications and video/graphics tasks.) I want my setup to be a good quality one, with excellent color fidelity, nits, and refresh rate. I want the Mini and the eGPU tucked away under the desk (sit/stand motorized type, L-shaped) so they are out of the way and there will be minimal noise. I want a Thunderbolt 3 dock to provide ports for connectivity and make it easy to connect either the Mini or the laptop (or perhaps some kind of switch between either the Mini or the laptop?) and I also want top-notch Cable Management so I could occasionally use one monitor for the laptop and the other for the Mini. So I've been thinking of buying a newer tv 55 to 60 in 4k with a 120hz panel. But I have trouble playing games like cod in huge screens. Do you think this is great alternative for the PS4 pro? Considering the highest games available are 4k 60hz

This seems perfect for consoles as 60hz isn't an issue with a controller and most PS4 games have HDR now.

Its a good monitor for an Xbox -X. It runs 4k at 60hz with that HDMI 2.0 port. Good for editing as well. I don`t recommend this for PC gaming. Good review.

Great review!! I only just got my LG 27UD88 4K delivered by Amazon, I'm thinking of returning it now and get this model instead coz of the additional speakers. This should be a superior model in every aspect right?

it's true that there aren't many pc games with HDR but i also use this monitor for my xbox one x and ps4 pro and it's insane, i got 2 of these i was going to use them both but didn't i selling one

Hi Tom, i'm an xps user as well though my model maxes out at 1080 resolution only. If i plug it in this monitor, will it be able to output 4k? Also will i be able make the icons smaller than how they appear in the laptop's screen? I'd really appreciate your reply as i'm really considering this monitor. Thanks in advance!

I Pretty tired to wait the 4k 144hz gsync monitors and the fact that they will be sold at 2500€ is a deal breaker for me even considering the haloing problems that they suffer. I would like a 4k 60Hz monitor with hdr10 for less than 1k USD. Is there anything like this on the market? I would like to pay even 1500 USD for a 1000nits one.

On your test of HDR you showed Dolby Vision. Are you telling me this monitor support HDR10 and Dolby Vision? All im seeing in LG's website is HDR10. Please explain.
