Its kinda like blue cheese which tastes like pudding and rubber boot feet with a hint of gasoline. I don't mind the smell too much though. The price is just a problem because my wife likes them. You're supposed to tap them with a stick to choose the one you want. We bought some from a farm once when visiting the beach, for like 100 bucks total...

Your durian didn't smell like rotten corpses because you got it frozen. Freezing denatures the components that produce that foul odor, resulting in a scent that's far less intense. If you want the true durian experience, eat it fresh.

I didn't really see a comment explaining this so... Pro-Tip on how to open a durian: There is a star-shape at the apex of the fruit, where the flower's style/pollen stem ends and the fruit begins. Use a knife to cut into the star and along the seams and then you can easily access the pods after pulling it apart from there. Also, you never really want to open a fruit from the stem since that is where it's thickest.

Speaking of the genetic aversion to cilantro, there's also a genetic aversion to grapefruit (which I have lol). Grapefruit smells and tastes unnaturally bitter to me, almost like something's rotting, and my nose is super sensitive to the smell too. I can't be in the same room as someone wearing grapefruit scented products, whether it be handsoap or perfume. Funnily enough, I tried Durian once (in a smoothie), and it wasn't bad at all. It tasted like vanilla with a hint of Garlic (not in a bad way though, if that somehow makes any sense).

I had the privilege of eating fresh Musang King once during a trip to Malaysia. Honestly, I didn't think it was that bad, tasted pleasantly sweet. and really not "foot-y" at all. The scent was strong, almost like a strong cheese, but not unbearably so. My biggest gripe was the texture, which I can only describe as if you mixed custard with raw squash. Also, Malaysians told me to have durian-flavored ice cream beforehand to see if I could tolerate the real deal, since it's supposed to be milder. That was a lie - the durian ice cream is ten times worse. For like an hour after eating it, very time I took a deep breath, I could just feel the used sock aftertaste in my mouth.

I'm honestly disappointed this one wasn't mixed with pork. I think that would have been interesting and maybe improved the texture a bit. I suggest doing this one again at some point in the future with fresh durian and pork together.

durian seeds are edible once cooked, you might boil them a long time, peel them and miz them with pork for an actually nice sausage. And fresh commom durian ttastes a bit like onions and garlic and is much lore conplex, it might even be palatable with pork.

@TaleDreamer

Mr. Sausage: The easier way to open a durian is from the "tip" (opposite side to the stem that joins the fruit to the tree) by prying it open with the point of a flathead screwdriver. The durian "shell" usually has a natural partitioning to it (kind of like how oranges have segments), so you would have to figure out the "seams" that join these partitions together, stick the flathead screwdriver to the tip of the durian along the seams and then pry it open that way. It takes a lot less effort this way compared to butchering the shell piece by piece.

@@franz.francisco Because it's delicious if you grow up with it, here in my country it's pretty much a national fruit and people sell them everywhere, and also it depends on the quality of durian itself, a lot of people on youtube who try durian challenge most of the time either eat the solid durian (Not ripe one) or pale looking durian which is flavour-less (Here we used that kind of durian as paste for various dessert or for cooking ingredients), i am not saying that would advance your experience but as someone who grow up with durian those factors are huge differentiator. So if you are not getting used to it in first place then ofc it's understandable you won't enjoy it, just like how i don't enjoy tasting blood sausage for first time despite a lot of my foreign friends said it's delicious, or how people can enjoy haggis or surstromming as well because in the end it's their custom.

@@HokutoDokuro if you take a knife and twist it while it's lodged in the durian at its bottom, it will naturally split along natural lines into a few. No hardwork knifing required, splits several times with just one twist, and most of all, no worries of accidentally cutting your durian flesh up!

I'm a Malaysian and we eat durians regularly. The way you cut the durian is that you need a tough knife and poke the bottom of the durian and twist the knife. With enough depth and force, the durian will break apart and split into (usually) it's six parts, then you'll need to pry the husk fraction with your hands and they'll come apart with the fruit sitting on one side of the husk. This method is much easier and it makes the durian quite presentable. Tho I don't really care how you cut a durian, as long as it isnt a chop down the middle. That's like chopping an avocado down the middle. Fun fact : the name "Durian" comes from the Malay word "Duri" and the prefix "-an", duri itself meant "thorns" and the prefix duri-an gives of the rough meaning of "thornage" or "to thorn"

It sounds like everyone who's been telling you about Durian has been mistaking it for Jackfruit. Oh, hey. You should do the Jackfruit Sausage. Jackfruit is often used as a vegetarian replacement for meat, because when it's cooked, it tastes just like it. The only time we had it, we used it to make Pulled "Pork" sandwiches. Literally, couldn't tell the difference in taste, it was mind blowing.
