This makes me think of generational wealth. It took years to build the TikTok platform to the point where it was self-sustaining and functional. By tearing it down while protecting the systems that the wealthy use, it puts the working class behind; since even if a replacement becomes available it will be years before it reaches the same utility.

My hope is that everyone that follows you on TikTok will find you other places. I never had an account there but I found you here and followed you on blue sky. I know the pay scale isn't the same. Part of me feels like this is less about china and more about making sure people stay poor. To many of "the wrong kind of people" having the ability to be there own boss and actually do things they enjoy or care about? Can't have that, back to manual labor and customer service!

While I can't speak to their actual motivation, they did propose and give time for a sale to a buyer from an allied country or the US. There are definite privacy concerns with TikTok, but most folks on social media deem them an acceptable risk. To me, it seems that the concerns over foreign influence campaigns targeting democracy are either underestimated or not understood. I don't assume you're in this group, but for those who are, it's important to know how the Chinese system works. The relationship between government and business there is different, or at least, more extreme and less flexible. There is no privacy right for owners or users in Chinese companies. So all your content, demographic information, friends and contacts, location data, photos, security information, etc. which is collected is given to the Chinese government. They have a huge cadre of workers constructing targeted campaigns that will attract your attention. If that's marketing for a product that might interest you, like Amazon does, that feels acceptable to many. But what about when they target propaganda operations, telling lies about a politician or policy to people who, for example, donate to animal welfare, or DV survivors, causing them to change their vote, or grow so disillusioned that they don't vote at all? You may say that this is already happening. You're right. And that's why the national security apparatus in this country, along with those in pro-democracy circles, have been calling attention to this issue. I highly recommend the documentary, Manufacturing Consent, or if you prefer, its original book form. It was written pre-TikTok, but the ideas apply perfectly to social media.

@bjdefilippo447 I'm not saying there's a concern for this but our own American owned social media platforms were caught and lawsuits were filed for selling our data to China. Zuckerberg with META as well as Google. Security measures should be put in place to prevent this from any social media or company in or out of the US. (I say this as tiktok is back for now but point still stands). Temu & Shien should be a concern too but somehow they are not.

sigh... I suspect there will be a sale and that alone would make me want to leave tt (given how the likely actors are) but let's not forget for DT and his ilk to thrive the world NEEDS to be a miserable place.. of course they took the joy...the cruelty is the point and it MUST be unescapable
@ElisandeWalters12 күн бұрын
If I think about al the things TT COULD have done: KEEPING the shareable OFF platform functions (as in being able to share a video to a person who doesn't have TT) not suppressing the LM content, NOT suppressing the indigenous voices regarding the XL pipelines... and actually PUSHING more low key socialist conetnt outside of its bubble NOT discriminating against BLack creators... all of these things WOULD have been in tehir power.. and given how much LM content is on XHS there would have been a wealth of stuff even from outside the usa, if they reallowed the sharing off plattform stuff we could now be inundating y'all with teh best stuff from our feed via signaland instead of a personal spy you could have had a personal non american tandem partner.. sigh.. if TT WANTED to... it could have.. but it NEVER did

Of course there is/was info harvesting, but companies here do the same. Our plutocrats are just mad that someone else was getting all that sweet, sweet interaction with their app.
@josephbelisle579213 күн бұрын
So what an I missing?!? How do you not know that US companies are doing this everywhere? How the wealthy have been taking over and buying property in other countries for centuries. How are you so clueless and myopic to think it is somehow a national threat issue when it is clearly about fascism. Controlling the narrative. Controlling people. I'm not saying TikTok doesn't have intrinsic problems. But you and others like you are worried about hang nails while the wealthy and fascists are bleeding you dry and are brainwashing you to think it's a good thing. The vampire is in the house to borrow a colloquium. Worry less about the overseas threat. Worry about the ones in your own home. Like an insurectionist being President. And it's not like he insurrected for you. He did it solely for himself.

Right there with you Donna. How can you be pro-democracy but your face melts off when a chinese owned app is shut down for not complying with the rules (or lack of) that the other cesspools- Meta & X - have to go by? Federal employees have been banned from having the app on their issued devices for the past couple of years because of national security issues. This isnt about TT harvesting data lol. If you have a smartphone - your data is harvested.
