Dave, one of the things I do on the wheels is take an illuminated magnifying glass and do an ultra close inspection of the nipple holes in the rim, looking for cracks starting to form. Initially it won’t show as a wobble or anything else, but you can see them starting.

Checking the torque on the rotor bolts is important also. I don't know how many of mine have come lose over time even with the blue Loctite on them

One of the last things I do is check the disk thickness is in tollerence replace the pads and realign the brakes by loosening the fixing screws clamping the brake on andmake sure it is centres and not pulling the disk one way ot the other and tightening the fixing screws.

Hi there, just wondering, I own a Lapierre Overvolt 5.5HT 2021, Yamaha PW Series TE Engine & my question is do you know what allen key sizes I need for this bike incase some parts come loose over time? Ive had a look at the bashguard & I cant find an allen key in my key set to open it, Can I remove this to make sure the motor is ok & that no dirt has got in as I do alot of mountain biking & do not want dirt/grit/water getting into the motor/electrics. Thank you.

Hi David, Good question, you need a set from 2mm right up to 8mm, but also a good set of torx keys would be useful too.

Dave, how do you connect the new smart system to the laptop when there's no display used. My Voima only has a tiny Bluetooth switch on the bars ? My LBS was flummoxed 🤷🏼‍♂️

@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic Hi Dave, the display has moved to the top tube and the controller on the bars is a mini Bluetooth version. By removing one screw from the top tube display you can lift out the unit and there's a usb port underneath, behind a rubber cap. I only found out this afternoon 👍🏻

Dave, do you own a Park tool disc brake flat mount facing set? How often do you use it? Can you do a video on some of the bikes you use it on and show us how bad some ebikes are coming thru new? I know they are, but I’d like to see it on video.

Thank you for watching and your comments, yes we do, we use it more on road bike frames or when we suspect a brake issue. we have come across a few that one post is higher than the other by about 1mm

With the suspension wouldn't it be best to slacken the bolts and then re-torque them? Surely by just putting the torque wrench on them you're checking that they are at least at the setting, but they could be well above, which could compromise the operation.

yes. as an HGV mechanic if you are checking the torque of a fastening you need to back it off first. This is important with wheel nuts because if they have been over tightened the threads could have "stretched" which can cause fracture or loosening. Just putting the torque wrench on them will not tell you if they've been over tightened.

Hi Matthew, Thanks for watching, I do understand what you mean, the gear cable is routed the right way, its comes from Giant like that, it could be re-routed round the other way but it may be a tad too short without finding loose around the top of the motor area. Well spotted though.

There is a port on the other side. This whole thing needs to be redone and part of the issue is this bike’s brakes are set up “moto” style (my preference if I could get all my bikes switched), where the front brake is going to the right side lever (throttle side on a MC) instead of the left. I think many countries are this way but here in the USA bicycles are still non moto.

it is against the law for a manufacturer to void your warranty for working on a product you bought. They have to prove that whatever you did caused the issue that you're asking the manufacturer to repair. However, even though this is the law, you'd probably have to take the manufacturer to court to enforce it :( Just want people to be aware of this so we can stop letting manufacturers get away with not fixing issues with their product due to customers exercising their right to own the products they purchase.

Interesting, you purchase a torque wrench to precisely tighten (some) bolts, screws etc to factory spec, but when it came to the tires which can be critical to safety, handling and battery life, a quick hand squeeze and it's - 'there's a good amount of pressure in there'. Makes me wonder what else are you going to judge by just having a poke around and saying 'that seems ok'...not good. You didn't adjust the correct torque for brake mount bolts which is usually 5-7nm ? - you just used an allen key. It's all pretty half arsed sir. 'The whole idea is to make it safe' - and don't bother with actually checking tyre pressures - wow.
