I can relate to you because I have always been a shy person ever since kindergarden. I remember my whole class reading from books or at least trying to read. Meanwhile I wasn't even talking a bit. My teacher would try to make me say them but I was just looking straight to her eyes like " Please don't." Unfortunately I live in a country which has people who will call you "coward" when you show them that you are shy. Also my parents are saying" If you avoid any kind of interaction with people, they will never respect you." Because of that I force myself REALLY hard to talk with them. I still feel uncomfortable deep inside whilst talking but I don't care that much about it as I used to be.

I have innatentive ADHD and not looking at someone's face is kinda my way to pay attention hahaha I don't naturally focus on one point, like a face, when i'm listening, so I have to actively do so and focus on keeping it. In order to pay full attention to a conversation I let my body wonder as my brain and ears are processing and recording the conversation. I kinda turn off my eyes. To answer your grocery store question... We don't even notice that you've come into the store. We don't notice when you leave. You're just a face that exists somewhere that we're only vaguely aware of. No need for anxiety, because you have not been noticed and no one is judging you.

Having worked in retail both behind the counter and in LP when I was younger, I can honestly say that we were mostly grateful that people didn't use the hidden corners as restrooms or stuff half-eaten sandwiches in behind the Lucky Charms. In LP we spent most of our time watching the employees because they're way better at stealing than you are.

Our job is to prevent fraud at the point of sale.The liability of getting sued over a false "arrest" is just not worth it for the store. It's part of our training to observe theft, but not engage with it. That's what loss prevention is for.

I work at Walmart, and they have a rule there that if a customer walks within ten feet of an employee then the employee has to ask the customer if they need help finding something. I kinda found a way to read people's faces to find out if they might need help finding something. It's a good rule, cause it helps the shy people who don't like initiating conversations, and helps me (the same kind of person) to more easily initiate conversations. Win win.

Lissen. I get you. I am PETRIFIED of department stores. I'm always Googling "where in Walmart (in my location) can I find (X) item". And I don't think I've ever once touched that Costco card I got since living on my own. Also if it makes you feel better, I don't go to the other local grocery store with better prices SOLELY BECAUSE it does not have a self check-out. The last thing I want to do with people while grocery shopping is talk to them, but if I don't talk to the clerk then I come off as rude, and I don't want to do ANYTHING to make myself come off as a rude or stupid customer. I've had times where I wanted to make people know I was focused on them while they spoke to me, which to me means eye contact. I end up focusing so hard on eye contact, that I can only focus on one of their eyes. Then I end up missing everything they said because I spend the rest of my time arguing with myself about which eye I should focus on, if they notice me only looking at one of their eyes at a time, if they see me switching between eyes, and how weird I look when I try to force my eyes to separate enough to look at both their eyes at a time. I'm pretty sure some people have actually been distracted by this, so I try not to do it much anymore. Especially as I never actually know what they are saying afterwards anyways. It's probably best to hear what people say to you rather than to have eye contact.

I've had the same dream twice, and it wasn't scary but it certainly was stupid. Basically it was a zombie apocalypse except the zombies were so unimportant to the plot that they hardly ever showed up, and for NO REASON, all the vehicles just turned into transformers. There's one specific moment that I remember, which is when I pretended to be a garden gnome because a transformer was about to find me (i should probably mention they wanted to kill everyone), and it frickin WORKED. But the transformer lifted me up by my shirt, and said out loud that he was gonna coat me with metal to make me a better garden gnome or sumthin and that's where the dream ends. Honorable mention, once I had a dream where my friend was playing Hungry Shark World on her phone in science class and I loved it.
