Angela played the frumpy, middle-aged Marjorie, in 'To the Manor Born;' with Penelope Keith. It was a bit of a shock to see Angela looking so well dressed and glamorous here - i was used to seeing her stomping about in muddy wellies and dowdy tweeds. But she really was very lovely looking when she was a young woman - and a fine actress, too.

Anna Massey was a fine actress - but her anorexia is so obvious to see here - she was so painfully thin that it was disturbing to look at her - the poor woman looked so undernourished and unwell. She only lived to be 73 - she must have damaged her health by starving herself. Anorexia is a terrible illness, which seems to afflict women more than men. It's almost as if those who suffer from it, are willing themselves to disappear.

I always thought Anna Massey was one of those women who are naturally thin-someone who doesn’t overeat or indulge in sugary treats. I only knew her work from her later years, but over the past few months, I’ve seen her in a couple of shows from her younger years, like the one here.

I watched this video for Anna Massey. I didn't know she suffered from anorexia, but as you mention, she looks so thin in this. I posted a T.V. episode with her in, but it's not as noticeable/obvious as in this. I think it's down to what she's wearing in the episode that highlights the issue. So sad.

I had to watch this when I saw it was written by Bernice Rubens. I knew her as a fine novelist and didn't know she also wrote telly plays. She was an early feminist and knew all about vain, self-centred, womanising men. It's so funny to see all the things that were different then - seat belts not compulsory, going to the air terminal to get the coach to Heathrow, town gas (which was poisonous) rather than North Sea gas, which was introduced a few years later ...

I forgot to add, that i read in an interview with Anna Massey, that her agent told her early on in her career, that she should try to be look like an English Audrey Hepburn. Unfortunately for Anna, she took that to mean that she should lose a lot of weight as quickly as possible - and this drastic dieting rapidly spiraled into anorexia, which had her in it's lethal grip for years. Girls in the 1950s were encouraged to look as curvy and plump as Marilyn Monroe - but fickle fashions changed radically in the 1960s - and the stick-figure body shape of Audrey Hepburn and Twiggy, became the longed for feminine ideal - and as a result of this madly unhealthy skeletal look, many horrendous eating disorders afflicted her female fans.
@Denise-qv1hv6 күн бұрын
Audrey Hepburn's body type was down to malnutrition throughout the war and Twiggy's to being naturally very slim. I knew Anna Massey was thin but not because of Anorexia.
