Do you really need an iPad as an architect, an intern or student? See if any of the four use cases I came up with match yours. Having always sketched on paper + trace with a pencil and ink, a tablet never really appealed to me or seemed entirely useful. I just wasn’t sure how it would fit into my workflow. But, the Apple pencil and Procreate have changed my mind. The Apple pencil is what makes using the iPad such an irresistible experience for me. It bridges the divide between the analog and digital and when it's so seamlessly integrated with an app like Procreate that you forget you're not using the real thing, that's a remarkable feat.
It's more than just a digital sketchbook though, the utility of the iPad extends far beyond that. In this video you'll see all the ways I'm putting it to work in my residential architecture practice. It may just be the thing that helps you rekindle your love of hand sketching.

So much so that I want to create new ways to organize myself and thoughts. Architecture and plan drawing process is what I landed on. For those who aren't apple based (small crowd, I know) Microsoft's Surface works really well also. I was back and forth between an iPad pro and the surface. For not much more I went with the surface. The main reason being is is that, unlike the iPad, I can run full programs on it and not just an app version. This was great for me at the time since I was also in the market for a computer. So I have a fully functional laptop (that handles SketchUp, cad, and Revit well) and a tablet.
@landshaperstudio
@landshaperstudio 4 жыл бұрын
I will say the main drawback to it though is that since you are running full versions of the programs, boot ups take a little longer for heavier ones like PS which I use to draw concept plans.
@Lilix-nm1xh
@Lilix-nm1xh 4 жыл бұрын
But the pen of the surface wasn’t as great as the apple one. Beside from that it run well for those app for architect. Still for those who want to expand their knowledge with digital i would recommend IPad but for only architect and being able to do thing without dragging your laptop with you then surface to me.
@landshaperstudio
@landshaperstudio 4 жыл бұрын
@@Lilix-nm1xh I could agree. The pencil of the iPad definitely feels much better, and without looking it up, I was to say had a higher dpi response (maybe). But the great part about the surface was it doesn't have to feel like dragging your laptop around. Often I don't even have the key board attached. And it's been handy on the occasion where i needed access to heavier capabilities while in the field. The fluidity of the Apple OS is hard to get past though :) I think UI is something apple will rule in for quite some time.

I'm a professional designer with many large scale projects under my belt - from elevation views of exhibits to minute 3-D modeled parts. The i-pad is a GREAT and must have tool. But it is only part of an inventory of tools! I love hand sketching and that's what attracted me to my current line of work. Learning digital drawing tech is a MUST - as a designer you have to learn and know it. Put it in your priorities as you need it but having a working understanding and aptitude is required of you in today's market. I think this is what is being communicated in this vid.

And its a very good price too. Both pc and ipad. Also for desktop version, I recommend the affinity publisher (like adobe indesign) and if you want to edit later in ipad the app affinity designer opens the same files and does a great job. Check them out. :)

I’m an architect, and I’ve been using the iPad Pro with Apple Pencil since the very first model was released. The apps I would recommend you try are: - Notability (for marking PDFs. Very simple and syncs with your iPhone and Mac) - Paper (simple sketchbook-like sketching app. Can sync with iPhone and allows for very quick, iterative sketching) - Concepts (very, very powerful vector drawing app. Has scale tools and an infinite canvas)
@30by40
@30by40 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks...haven’t tried Notability yet will have to give that a spin. Curious if you export the vector line work from Concepts to use elsewhere?
@sayedhusainalmousawi3632
@sayedhusainalmousawi3632 4 жыл бұрын
@@30by40 I haven't done that, but the way I use the app makes it almost impossible to export and use the lines for CAD work. But that also depends on the tool you're using and the approach you take. For instance, there is a line tool that I really never use. It creates perfect, CAD-like lines. But I use other tools (like pencils, pens, highlighters, and watercolor), and my approach is using the app as a replacement for a drafting table. Meaning that I mainly draw plans/sections to scale, and sketch some ideas on the side. To me, this works really well. You can also insert measurements on the drawing, and show/hide them as well. And since I draw numerous lines on top of each other, and draw some less-perfect lines, this makes it very messy if it gets exported to CAD. The app is really extensive and can accommodate multiple ways of work. I would recommend you try it using different approaches (sketches, measured drawings, drafting with the line tool) and see what works. It has great tools you won't find anywhere else. Examples are: - There are masking tools (like an eraser, but it does not erase the lines beneath them, it just hides them so you can always delete the mask) - There is a true eraser that literally cuts the line, so that if you have one line you can cut it into two and each one is a separate object (the app treats each continuous part as an object that you can manipulate. It's interesting) - A nudge tools allows you to manipulate lines by nudging them. Very nice for perfecting curved lines And much, much more. I can explain it all day but you've really got to test it. It's very deep. Cheers, Husain

Hey Eric, Glad to see your post on this. I am a noobie when it comes to using the iPad for work. I want to like it, but it’s taking some time. I am finding though that my busy travel schedule allows me to remain engaged in the creative process, giving feedback to the team while on the go has been very helpful. I am using Morpholio Trace and Procreate primarily. Other tools we use in the office are tied to Microsoft 360 cloud services like Word, PowerPoint and OneDrive for cloud file management. Ciao my friend.

Finally,a proper review. Yes, this will not replace my surface book, which I need to replace. Thus, I will still need a will need a windows laptop. But agree, iPad might be better for ideation. I've been with surface book since it came out and I think I'm ready to give the ideation workflow to the iPad pro. But still need my windows workhorse laptop (mobile workstation) and windows workhorse desktop for heavy duty work. And yes we have quirks and preferences, we are getting old!

Hi there, interesting to read that you know started to understand the value of a drawing tablet. Few more apps for you to look into: Concepts - I find this as a designer seriously beating overhyped pro-create. Instead of Procreate SketchBook (Free) is also a very useful app. You mentioned morpholio which is pretty good also with its AR to sketch idea. But I always go back to concepts. Regarding 3D CAD look at Shar3D - how SketchUp should have been. CAD models made on site can be send later to autocad etc. No more taking paper notes for dimensions etc ... Probably you know there is also a mobile version of autocad for iOS.

I am always in awe of your ability to be so organized! That is one thing I struggle with. Being organized itself is not necessarily the most difficult part, but being organized in 'real-time' is. How do you stay organized in the midst of various projects and ideas? My mind seems to scrambly to take the few seconds to put pens back where they were or maintain any notion of order on my desk! It's definitely the number one 'skill' I (and maybe others) need to learn. Your sense of organization never ceases to amaze me

Eric, I am working really hard right now to become an architect and your videos are a constant source or hope and encouragement. Your commitment to excellence in all aspects astounding. I seriously cannot get enough of your content. Your architecture practice looks most like the one I want to build than any other out there, and it is because of you that my vision has found room to run. I love this particular video because all of the ways you have grown (in video production) are on display but you let down some of the formality you sometimes have, without being 'goofy'. So grateful for your work. Keep it up! One day I hope we will be peers!

Hi Eric, thanks for sharing your workflow. I haven’t had much on site action using the iPad, so your share does provide perspective. I also like using notability. You can drag and drop a whole PDF into the notability app, and markups can be done with pens and highlighters. This is great for overlaying images and markups, and the pages scroll easily. I think acrobat is great, but it’s a bit rigid, whereas notability is more like a scrap book and you can throw images markers on top. Hope that makes sense. I’ve used Bluebeam and thought it worked well, no crashes. I think it poses a problem for contractors who aren’t computer savvy. Like AutoCAD, it’s not powerful like the desktop version. Bluebeam iPad does allow takeoffs, but it doesn’t have snap. Oh, I was also using Bluebeam with a pen, whereas I suspect those reviews were based on touch?

Concepts is a good app to mark and sketch on pdf drawings for example, i use it as a structural engineer to sketch on the drawings i receive from the architect. Its also very good with scale, you can set the scale relative to the screen. So i use a phisical ruler on the screen to measure and draw. Also paperlike 2 is much better then 1.

I hate apple, you're stuck in an expensive ecosystem and they just generally rip people off but I will give credit where credit is due. As a digital artist I have used many brands of drawing tablets like wacom intuos and cintiq, xp pen deco 03, huion, nit even wacom comes close to the experience I've had on my ipad pro. Its flawless when compared to everything else. Even the new samsung tab s7 doesn't quite compete. Yes it has a better screen, but the s pen is still not good enough, the pressure sensativity is sketchy and as far as I can tell tilt is still not supported and the amount of apps available is not as diverse as in the apple app store. Ipad pro as a creative tool is second to none.
