I could try reading the manga for myself but there are some issues about that. First off there is not even an official translation into English so you will have to settle for fan translations. Personally I feel like the only reason this even exists is because of studios trying to cash of animes mainstream success as of late. It's basically been the only thing most people want when it comes to entertainment these days at least that's what studios think which I feel is the main reason for this and things like the suicide squad anime and Batman ninja 2.

THANK YOU , high IQ adult life long super fan of animation including some Anime despite being crusty so not real demo but have watched Rick and Morty front to back many times and this was like I had no idea what I was watching . I could not at all make sense of the time lines . Galactic empire and statutory rapist birdmans high school GF , OK, the house , home built saucer that never made sense considering how slick Rick's other stuff is , Mortys bizarre hair ,Rick's bald spot and a couple green portal swirlys I didn't feel like I was watching anything to do with Rick and Morty and nothing comedic . The time line thing was just hard to grasp . Who is this possibly for and does ANYBODY think it's awesome and I'm just getting closer to death pushing 60 and time to just admit I'm crusty at 57 and it's not made for me despite watching the dawn or golden age of adult animation be born ? I think it's absolutely un watchable but maybe somenody thinks it's great and gets it. In which case GOOD , but to me it is beyond bad .

I didn't watch ANY TV for 20 plus years so some young friends showed it to me after out for a long time , was loaded and thought wow this is pretty hardcore and I see why people reference it . But unfortunately with long wait times and I guess one of them having some form of Diddy or other mental disorder it really fell apart . I think my fave is Venture Bros at least the ones I have re watched more then others , Archer . The satanic dog with the tard kid , big titted mom , grandpa and goofy cop with cookie monster metal intro was something I seen not long ago that was pretty whacky and dark . Reality is , Reality is SOO MUCH DARKER that these perverse over the top and nihilistic cartoons almost don't work now that you find Hollywood , entertainment and politics is SOMEHOW EVEN DARKER then you KNEW IT WAS and there is now NO SHOCK VALUE or High Concept over the top shit that competes with the Rap Game and Hollywood . I've worked hospitality at major venue as well as in fringe biz associated with Hollywood so " met " a mess of people and a little partying and met some of the super vapid and charactures of A /B and C celebrities working Prince Hospitality on Purple Rain Tour , Grateful Dead and Ozzy etc etc and had a friend or 2 that became A lister that i kept up for a bit ( they popped after highschool ) but then faded out , so I am not completely out of the loop and HOLY HELL ( Litterally ) , the " news " today makes NOTHING FUNNY or TOO MUCH as far as adult animation and dark comedy etc . Like I feel like no comedy or satire will ever be kind of edgey and dark enough to play on that shit to be funny . It's BEYOND PARADY and dark humor now . Its world is extremally convoluted and built on top of itself, almost as expansive as entirety of warhammer 40k in terms of "convoluted", but interacting with any piece of it doesn't 'overwhelm' you with lore, as much as leaves intrigue to make you want to tie the frayed pieces together, all while giving you enough "idea" about what you experienced to make it a whole self-contained part of story - both part of greater whole, but with message that feels complete and closed.

Heck, they literally had a choice to make a Rick and Morty anime by themes already present. Rick and Morty generally deals with the ability to grow beyond yourself when you impede yourself, and this is meant metaphorically. In addition, Rick is a superpowered being in of himself even excluding the Centeal Limit Curve that literally always makes him correct. On average, this is a decent deconstruction of battle shounen, where mental development and physical development are in tandem, and especially of that mentor that can teach you how the world works. I’m not saying that makes it unique, but narratively it at least had a chance. But no.

To quote Takahata101 "Rick and Morty's greatest sin is making dumb people think they're smart. It's written so stupid people can understand it." At least I think that's what he said, it was something to that effect. I just know he realizes the fanbase can be very problematic and that while a show may be able to address high concepts, fans (no matter what they follow) need to realize they still need to treat others with respect because watching a show doesn't necessarily make you smarter or better than anyone else. Personally, I've never seen the appeal to this show either and sometimes I have wondered if I should give it a try, but one look or one line always turns me away. I honestly had the same problem with Adventure Time and still do. That's why I'm glad for reviewers like you. Regardless of whether I can agree with your opinion or not, I can still respect your views and takes, especially those that go the extra mile to explain why they feel something works or doesn't. It gives me a greater understanding of not only the things I like, but also things I don't. I can come to appreciate whatever the subject is and all its accomplishments as well as its failures. My biggest issue with Rick and Morty apart from what you just described is how inconsistent the whole thing is. The first two seasons were generally very good when they acknowledged how ludicrous and stupid the show was and embraced it. You would see occasional bits of intelligence but that might’ve just signaled to the fan base that there was more to this show than there actually was. Nowadays, it keeps alternating between trying to be philosophical and failing at it due to the writers not really knowing how to work it into the setting and simply going back to stupid shit when that doesn’t work. The fans however never noticed this and keep defending and showing up for more. Ironically, the episode that regularly filters people, Pickle Rick is brilliant when it embraces the stupidity of the whole concept and it completely falls apart when they actually try to tie into characterization and drama that ends up going nowhere anyway.

I still stand by my opinion that the first two seasons were when the show was still at its prime. Other than that, Crayon Shin-chan does look leagues better than this (not throwing shade since the artstyle for Crayon is intentional and has its charm)

7:33 I had less of an issue with these teeth than Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution myself. Boy were those teeth just uncanny... Also the original Paramount Sonic design, ugh. And speaking of that original Paramount Sonic design, honestly the Mewtwo Strikes Back character models deserved to be mocked in the Rescue Rangers movie more than some of the other rendered 3D characters in that movie. Especially BOB from Monsters vs Aliens. BOB's design is too simple to be worthy of mockery.

Seriously I mean I kind of expected to get pretty bad when they talked about the VR game and they barely touched on how different this vr version was compared to the other vr episodes. Not to mention I was actually skipping most of this particular episode because they did a sketch better already where Morty was living the entire game.

I kinda fell off with Rick and Morty around season 5 or 6, I think. The one with the invasion of literal giant sperm cells. I think the first couple of seasons of the origin show were great and are definitely worth watching. But this anime adaptation? I genuinely struggled to watch it, even though I did want to try and get back into the show. And that's despite the added benefit of watching it through the filter of a VTuber reacting to it. I don't even want to know how much more I would've suffered from it had I watched it on my own.
