What added more of a terrifying element to Ramses was that CGI was still relatively new. So when you're a kid and you've only seen 2D animated films and shows, seeing some brand new art style that was so vastly different than what you were used to enhanced the already uncanny and shuddering visual horror.

This comment I was looking for. I loved Courage but this episode actually fucked me up and I avoided the show for a while. It was the sudden unexpected transition to 3d art which was very new in general

I was going to say the same thing. It made him feel so foreign to the rest of the show. Like he obviously didn’t belong there and was from some other unknowable plane of existence. Perfection

Yes this. The cgi/animation style was in its early days and it looked so grotesque. You went from the usual 2D colorful cartoon, to that weird 3D amorphous thing with rather stiff motions. Literal gave me nightmares the first time I watched it

this is true. the transition from courage the cowardly dog's old style animation to computer cgi was very new to the senses and the eyes at the time, so ramses felt like it doesn't belong there and it makes you think that it is real.

the scariest part of the character himself, was the uncanny nature of him being a 3d model in a completely 2d world and being the only example in the whole series as far as I know.

The fact that he was 3D CGI in an, up until then, completely 2D universe gave him this foreign presence. Like he was from some unknowable and terrifying plane of existence that was intruding on Courage’s. CGI like this wasn’t super common then either so it was so jarring. Almost like he transcended the show and real life and was intruding on our world to get back what was his. The feeling of unbeatable, unknowable dread is such a testament to what makes Courage so special.

I see many people say that scene was scary, but maybe what I find scary is different to other people. Because I was never bothered by that part of that episode. Ever. Not the first time, not any subsequent time. But King Ramses? Eugh. I had shivers from it down my spine for years, up until I was 15. Also, Fred and the Katz episode scared me a lot in general. Like eerie. But I'm also more auditorially geared, so good creepy sound design scares the living shit outta me more than any visual ever could. Only time visuals get me is erratic movements, like the sister from Pet Sematary(the rendition where she snaps around and sounds horrifyingly hoarse), or well King Ramses. Or skulls/empty eye sockets. Don't know why. Hate. Those little ghost things in Animal Crossing or that one Mario Game on the edge of the map? Hate. Skulls in general? Hate. Can't do it. But Outlast? No problem. Amnesia? FNAF? No problem. Clowns? No problem. Hate skulls and creepy sounds though. The ending of Black Sabbath's "Children of the Grave" will never not cause me to piss my pants.

I think it's off-putting mostly because it's a completely different type of animation (crude CG in a traditional 2D animated world), but also the framerate seems considerably higher. It would be like if a flatlander all the sudden saw a three-dimensional human being for the first time.

Thats exactly what I've thought for ages. There's quite a bit of art in that show that should be considered "scarier" but because it's still grounded in that animation style it makes it familiar, but the crude cgi and diverging frame rates immediately give the vibe that something is off, then your brain does the rest of the work.

To which Eustace says that hes out of ammo and that he needs to piss off, until he makes him an offer. When you think about it, one of the scarier parts of the episode is that Ramses wasn't really defeated or won over like other villains on the show. The only thing you can do is appease him and hope he goes away on his own. He could have easily stayed and killed everyone out of spite, but he held up his end of the deal and showed mercy [except to Eustace, who really really really had it coming by chasing after him to steal the slab back].

In 4th grade I saw the “you’re not perfect” episode at the worst time possible. We were having our wood floors replaced and some walls repainted, so there were parts of the house sectioned off by that clear plastic wrap, the floor was now that gray stone that’s under the wood, I heard banging and drilling noises from across the house, and everything felt empty and surreal without the furniture. As a 4th grader, my home already felt unnerving and haunted, but that cgi abomination from hell made it 10x worse. I constantly worried about the rooms of my house sectioned off due to paint fumes, because who knows what’s lurking in there. But it gets worse, I was being taken care of by adult cousin and adult older sister, because my parents were out of town. It was summer too, so I spent a lot of time at home by myself. The empty living room at night felt like hell. A small breeze would move the plastic wrap and the sounds would scare the shit out of me. I would call my parents just to hear their voices lol. I snuck caffeinated drinks to avoid sleeping, because I was terrified of seeing that thing in my nightmares. I eventually googled how to get over fear, and I saw “exposure therapy” as a method. So I hyped myself up for like an hour and decided to make the monster my iPad background. At first it made me more scared, but I got used to it after a day or two. I remember I felt invincible after that.

You lose a lot of the scariness of Ramses's curse by watching this in high definition TVs and computers. Back when this episode came out, many of us watched this on old ass CRT TVs, which often made otherwise obvious 3D CG look much more real, especially as Ramses had a different style to the rest of the 2D animated show. There’s something to be said about what exactly makes as effective in his portrayal as he is. The poorly-rendered 3D model with its form that merely attempts to mimic reality but simply cannot, resulting in a starkly off putting figure that moves as if it’s actually undead, with the inwards cheeks and skinny limbs only complimenting that. Despite that, I think possibly the strongest aspect of this character is his presentation. How close, yet utterly distant he seems to the viewer. The feeling that you’d die if you stepped within five feet of his presence, or if you stepped closer, the detail you would find would be even more shocking. I think this is why as a kid, I thought the scariest moments involving him involved him summoning the plagues. The way his hands would crookedly raise into the air, almost as if to signify impending doom. In a way…it’s almost as if this was the closest one could get to Ramses without him causing unspeakable damage. He’s a spooky scary guy, dude

None of the courage episodes scared me until the very last episode٫ the "You're not perfect" thing٫ I swear I was only 4 years old and it's one of my lingering memories of my childhood; but it was terrifying for me for a few other contributors. For one٫ I remember the first time I watched it٫ I was actually not at home where I usually would be watching courage٫ I was at my great grandparent's house because my mom was working late. They weren't the nicest to me٫ and my great grandmother collected antique dolls. It was a very creepy atmosphere. 2nd٫ I was the only one awake. Usually I would watch with my older brother but I don't even think he was staying there with me٫ he must have been at a friend's house or something. But seeing that on TV and having nobody to immediately tell about it to made me feel even more terrified somehow٫ like nobody to comfort me about it. Also٫ the tv was HUGE. I'm 5'6" now as a adult and they still have the same TV and it's still a little taller than me!! So little 4 year old me sitting there when that mf came on full screen was sooo scary. For years I thought it didn't even actually happen until I saw a KZbin video about it when I was about 16.

When I was a kid this was the only Courage episode that actually scared me. In my childhood home, my TV was in the living room right next to the window that leads to the porch and faces the front yard. I watched the episode at night while sitting in the chair next to the window. For some reason, I feel like the reason it struck so much fear was BECAUSE of how uncanny he looks compared to the other courage villains. He is weirdly 3D, and has a chilling voice. And the way he is just simply standing outside of their home at night seems far too close to a real possibility compared to the outlandish monsters and creatures you normally see in Courage that you would never encounter. But this? It’s a weird creepy dude outside your home. Which is a little too *real*. I remember watching the episode and scaring the shit out of myself when I inevitably pulled the crinkly blinds down to peer outside and stare at my front yard, psyching my stupid child brain out and striking the fear of god into my own heart.

I can relate man. I was sitting in my kitchen late at night playing with Lego's after watching that episode and I felt as if I was being watched, a few moments later I checked our kitchen door leading outside and I saw him there, just standing with a rotten face looking at me with red ghoulish eyes. I ran crying to my mom and she prayed to God that this demon would leave me alone. 8 years later Charlie finally made this episode and I can now know that I wasn't alone in the fear this thing caused. Watching this scene in modern-definition format really does suck away a good amount of the fear factor -- you can really tell it's just a goofy 3D model. However, most of us probably first saw it on a low-definition picture tube or CRT television; the grainy picture quality made it hard to discern exactly what King Ramses looked like and hid the janky movements and model stretching, i.e. leaving more to the imagination. Drop the video quality to 144p and you might be able to see what I'm getting at.

It wasn’t the scariest thing I saw back then, I had a nightmare where I fell several storeys from a high place. Regardless, it definitely was one of the scariest memories I had back then. Personally the character that creeped me out the most was Freaky Fred. Something about his uncomposed demeanor and unpredictable behavior never failed to make me uneasy. His character had these underlying sinister vibes that you couldn’t quite figure out and that mystery made the episode that much better. My grandma was a horror movie addict when I was around 5 and 6. I had watched and had nightmares about The Ring, The Grudge, and Chucky(this was around '03) and when I saw it then, and when I say it now, that scene may be the most terrifying thing I'd seen as kid after watching literally some of the scariest horror movies in the 2000s before I'd ever come across him. I may not have been traumatized through the pre-existing trauma, but that just makes it more believable when I say, objectively, that shit is terrifying. All the little horror things they put in to make a 3D model scary worked too well. The movement, speech, lighting, it's all genuinely well done horror through a bad CGI model.

No one was hurt, but the six bullet holes in her fence pretty much told us she'd gotten the revolver from the arm of her chair and chased an "intruder" out into the backyard where she shot him til he disappeared. Something I always like to bring up in this context is that Eustace at some point in the episode, is in arm's length of Ramses Like can you image being in grabbing distance of something that looks like Ramses? Something that does not look of this earth? I think Ramses, the violin girl and the spirit of the harvest moon is probably the closest this show, or any show, is to describing the terror of witnessing some sort of eldritch creature God I was even just wishing a bit ago that something in modern kids shows could create something that horrifically memorable

Man, Courage really is the greatest Cartoon. Courage the Cowardly Dog's quotes, concepts, and characters come up in my family's conversations up to and sometimes exceeding 3 times a week. It has stood the test of time for what our family will quote or reminisce about, and that seems silly for a cartoon, but those that have watched it will understand. This show, like Charlie says, left such an impact on kids growing up that the innate recollection of childhood fear Ramses evoked is ubiquitous among kids that had Cartoon Network on their TV. My personal childhood bogeyman from this show was the Harvest Spirit (I think that's what he was called) he was the big floating white head that spoke in a deep spooky voice and was pants-shiddingly scary for someone who was used to watching Blues Clues and Sesame Street at the time. I used to worry he would appear in the front room and chase me down the halls. That made me run like hell if the lights were out. But this show had so many gripping, emotional, funny, and compelling stories that they always left an imprint on me in some way. For example the Star Squid episode still hits ya right in the feels and the ending to it is the reason it is one of if not my favorite episodes of Courage, with Young Muriel being a close second. You have to watch at least a few episodes of it to understand, and I assure you, you will not regret watching it. This show deserves to be remembered.

Courage the Cowardly Dog will remain one of my favorite childhood cartoons because of how surreal yet unique it was from the other cartoons Cartoon Network had during what I consider their Golden Era. It had the same amount of humor you'd find from a show airing in Cartoon Network (that wasn't a dubbed anime), yet it's aesthetic was so creepy that you would think it wasn't meant for kids. Every villain or monster either was so weird or so terrifying to look at. If it wasn't the villains? It was certain scenes that would just happen out of nowhere that fills the eerie vibe. The Episode where Courage was having nightmares as he was unable to sleep was one of the creepiest ones. The one where it was saying 'You're not perfect' came without warning or a transition. It freaked me out.
