It's too bad that there isn't some kind of...covering... that goes over the face...that can filter out toxic gasses. A...gas filter face covering device. It would fit over the face similar to a Halloween costume head covering...whatever those are called.

I think the biggest place where the movie slipped up was having a light of hope for the people who didn't take the Exit Pills, for one reason or another. In a vacuum, that's a nice way to have a bittersweet ending in a movie about people taking cyanide pills to avoid the apocalypse...but it's also the plot element that makes this slip into an accidentally perfect allegory for antivaxxers' beliefs about vaccines. And it's also kinda weird for a climate change allegory. I mean, there's no way that marginalized people ignored by half-measures against climate change will come out _less_ doomed than the people those measures half-protect. I cannot imagine any sensible way that Art's survival (and the implied survival of some people who never had access to Exit Pills) could fit into the allegory for climate change. If anyone else can, I'd love to hear their thoughts, because it just seems bizarre. This isn't related, but any reference to the "FUCKING AQUAMAN?!?" bit cracks me up.
@JimMeiller2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's weird how well this works as an (unintentional) anti-vax allegory given how poorly it works as a climate change allegory. Like, if you read it as an anti-vax allegory it's arguably a much better movie, at least in terms of thematic coherence.
@user-qv2qf1jk5o Жыл бұрын
I mean, I get the idea that the pills = doomerism and it’s a pill only those in relative power can afford to take, really. So: true, earnest attempts at survival are GOOD, though sometimes required, while rolling over is BAD, and always optional. It does get a bit messy in terms of actual material conditions - maybe they could have said something about how they can afford greater protections, to be safe from the gas for longer? So ultimately more marginalized populations die anyway tho some survive? But then that undercuts it significantly bc the ending is even less optimistic IMO, as it implies that only a handful of non conformist rich people are still standing. So it’s not as much of a fun twist. ultimately I think it’s better read as a spiritual allegory, which doesn’t give a lot of thought to the agency of implied offscreen characters

Ok, I definitely need to watch this. Even with *gestures at everything* a dark comedy taking place during an apocalypse is very much my jam. Speaking of, have you ever seen the 1998 film Last Night? It's a really fantastic darkly funny but also really poignant little movie all set on the last day of the world. Its more of an ensemble kind of movie but it's really good and I think you may like it.

Yowch, that must hurt for the filmmakers! It's rather like how the Mysterious Benedict Society's premise feels just a bit unintentionally and unfortunately sussy-wussy in world now plagued by Qanon. (Do still check out the Mysterious Benedict Society, though, because it is delightful in spite of that.)

I disagree so much with the sex scene part. I love, I absolutely LOVE the fact that I there's no sex scenes in this movie. it does tells a very vlsad message. sex isn't the center of people's lives and relationships. companionship, caring, laughing, support, understanding, knowing, is. And this is NOT a message that's said in most movies and that is ONE HUGE TRUE we are in desperate need to spread.

In my teens I could not stand bleak movies. I was desperate to find something to be happy about, and I was chronically depressed, I viewed bleak movies as traps. As something I would get stuck on and fixate on if I dared let myself engage with it, I shoved that shit away so hard as a teenager because I was desperate to have a good time while I could. It felt like it was my only chance. 30 years old now, and very tired. I've been running away from the bleakness for a long time, but I found that dark comedies let me do one very important thing. They let me laugh at the abyss, they let me laugh right at it's fucking face.

I had no idea this film existed, so when you mentioned the basic premise at the start, I paused your video, went over to and watched it, before coming back. Like you, I really enjoyed it - even if I did guess the “twist” that was coming, considering the title of your video. And like you, I was stunned by how good the child actors were, though after seeing Jojo Rabbit, I really shouldn’t be surprised by Roman Griffin Davis, at the very least. I have pretty dark taste in film and books, and this was right up there as well as giving me several big laughs. I’m new to your channel, having recently discovered Caelan’s, and after seeing the long piece you made with them breaking down the whole “queer people are groomers” BS and being ridiculously impressed with…well, everything about it, I had to subscribe here immediately. So far, I love your work and I’m looking forward to watching more of it. Hope you go from strength to strength!

John Carpenter's artistic intent for They Live really doesn't matter, the fact is making the villain an outside other pretending to be normal people is the conservative world view. The Left is supposed be blaming material conditions, but it simply is more difficult to actually do that allegorically which is so many Leftist allegories are wide open to Right Wing co-opting.
