I feel so bad for this poor girl. She's so young and she's feeling all this pain around her everyday in the most literal sense and because it's rare and not as widely known, almost everyone, including her mother and herself, think that she's either crazy or bad when she is neither. She was in pain, she didn't know why, and she got all the blame for it. To all the people who think I'm confusing acting with real life, I'm not. I'm not talking about the actress, I'm talking about the character. Just so you understand.

Well, this happen all the time. A unknown mental problem remains undiagnosed and to everyone including specialists who study for years don't know it existed. I once saw a case with a kid who was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome and everyone thought he was only doing it for attention and one psychiatrist believes that their are the result of his parents' divorce and one lady suggested a exorcist. Till his mum finally discover what his mental problem was.

@voiceacticon667
@voiceacticon667 Жыл бұрын
@@ifti80 basically synesthesia is a neurological condition where more sense is connected to the other. For example there is Grapheme-Color Synesthesia Where someone will look at a group of letters or numbers and they would appear as certain colors. Or there can be taste synesthesia where someone would see certain colors as they taste something. For example, I read in the comments once that some kid said that when he was 4 he loved to put a nickel is his mouth not for its taste but because he loved the color that came with it. What did he mean by this? The taste of the nickel caused him to see blares of green all around him. There is also synesthesia associated with sound where someone would see certain colors as a sound is made. For example, this girl would have her eyes open or closed and she would see certain flashes of light as music played. Synesthesia is also sometimes associated with smell where the sense of smell is automatically triggered when hearing a specific sound. For example, someone who plays a certain note on a piano would smell or taste certain flavors. The E key sound would smell like socks. Or G major would taste like copper as they heard it. Mirror mirror synesthesia? Well I guess you already know about that one based in this video.

I just realized how difficult a condition like this could make having healthy arguments with loved ones. Imagine Ariel, perhaps a little older, having a lovers' spat with her boyfriend. Regardless of who's more at fault, she's going to be feeling her boyfriend's anger on top of whatever anger of her own she may be feeling. So when she reaches the point where she might otherwise start cooling down and becoming more conciliatory, unless the boyfriend reaches that point at the same time, her condition may just turn her boyfriend's remaining anger into a positive feedback loop. She mirrors his anger, causing her to act angrily, which only pisses him off more, and so on. Unless she's sufficiently adept at the coping techniques, she may not be able to help escalating the situation even when she actually wishes she could de-escalate it.
@tayervandenoetelaar9999
@tayervandenoetelaar9999 Жыл бұрын
That sounds like an awful domino effect. Thank god there only has to be one understanding, wonderful person that becomes her partner to change the awful in amazing. If she gets angry with something, her partner will tell her to focus on the calm him, which she'll be able to mirror and ease the emotions. If they get into a fight with eachother, but he is able to cool down within seconds and be ready for mending. She'll be able to let go of her anger more easily by mirroring his change in emotions and start mending together, putting her feelings to word and come to understanding which cools down the situation even more. Her partner will then have a chance to understand what she is thinking and express his feelings too. Understanding eachother will lead to de-escalation of the fight until it's no longer there!
@yuukinoyuki9064
@yuukinoyuki9064 Жыл бұрын
She'd just have to learn to walk away from arguments when emotions run high. Just a simple comment of, "I'm too emotional to handle this right now, I'm going to go into the other room to cool down." Another option would be to have arguments over the phone, or if her synthesia extends to vocal cues, over text. Conflict resolution skills aren't really steeped in you not getting mad but in you having a plan of action for when you do get mad.
@recoveringsoul755
@recoveringsoul755 Жыл бұрын
Since she can feel the emotions and pain of others, I would think she would know about any dissatisfaction long before it came to an argument. And they could have a HEALTHY discussion, which doesn't involve any yelling or anger at all. Just calmly talking about how you each feel, he would need to be able to help her separate her feelings from his. She needs a calm understanding person who doesn't ever want to hurt her. I never heard my parents raise their voices, I'm sure they had fights, but I didn't see any obvious signs of that . It's a choice. Deal with issues as soon as you're aware of them, don't let it fester, Ariel would know something was bothering you anyway. Maybe she could become a great healer, or be able to communicate with non verbal people. She would never hurt her boyfriend because it would hurt her too. Imagine how great sex would be

I am diagnosed with mirror-touch synesthesia, and I find it rather funny how extremely exaggerated it is portrayed here, at least compared to my cases and the ones I know. In the cases I know it's much more subtle but has a big impact on our life. It's not always bad; we tend to be very good listeners, though for example most of us would rather go broke a thousand times than be doctors, because of the amount of pain we would have to endure. One specific thing I've realized, for example, is how I'm often uncomfortable in circus performances since watching the effort of the acrobatics makes me terribly sore.

In the Series, they present it like that she doesn’t even need to look at certain people’s expressions to mirror it, that it just kinda happens out of the blue like telepathically. In reality, someone with the condition would have to look at a person whose experiencing the emotions or pain in order to mirror it. You can’t mirror what you don’t see/notice :P

Her mom just having an ulcer and feeling ill would not cause her to feel it. However, her mom getting punched in the stomach would make her feel pain though if she was watching. Then there is seizure. Again, "mirror-touch". It would be like a punch or a kick, or even sex. Not just a straight up seizure or pain itself though. I hope that explains it better

this clip is an interesting revelation for me. knowing that there are people out there who absolutely cannot empathize with the people around them, of course there must be people at the other end of the scale, who feel everything so intensely and involuntarily. I'm high functioning autistic, and my particular flavor features a strong separation between my logic and critical thinking, and my emotions. for a long time i thought i was unable to empathize, but i learned i was subconsciously good at picking up on the underlying emotions of others, i just would "filter" it through my own logic. i was able to learn how to listen to my "emotional reception" and trained myself to deconstruct and understand it instead of dismissing what didnt gel with my own thought processes. it has served me well working in various jobs in the service industry, because i sort of automatically adjust my mannerisms and attitude to synergize with the people im dealing with.

I always got made fun of in class whenever I told my classmates that I felt like the color green had like a metallic-iron taste, where as purple was like smooth and creamy. my friends thought I was high, seeing as though I could see colors whenever I heard numbers. or if someone sang the alphabet, I'd give them personalities. we may not know it, but we all have a little bit of synesthesia in ourselves. for example, between the words "bouba" and "kiki", which word would describe a hard, sharp object? it would make sense that "kiki" would be it, right? we associate the sharp points of the letters with our imaginary shape to make it a visual object. growing up, I always thought that numbers had different personalities. like the number 7 is a cool, laid-back guy with a drink in his hand, whereas number 3 is a single, independent woman who's been working nonstop at her job. although it's not mirror touch synesthesia, I'm proud that I have this ability. call me crazy for thinking colors have scents and numbers have genders, but it's how I've associated with the world. there's a lot of KZbin videos on synesthesia, but my personal favorite is the woman that plays violin in accordance to colors. you can see what colors she hears while she plays, it's incredible. or if you wanna go way back to childhood, watch the part in ratatouille where remy and his brother are eating cheese and grapes at the same time. you'll figure out where that's going hehe. any fellow synesthetes out there too? gimmie a hand raise!🤚🏼

It’s more like dull aches, like headaches, ect. It’s really cool that it’s being represented in media!! This sort of this is usually caused by CPTSD for those who are curious.

@@starfar2481 so it depends on the person- having cptsd or ptsd doesn’t mean you’ll definitely experience this. I typically only experience this when I’m already in a place of anxiety. But it’s usually sensed with emotion first. So if you find yourself ‘reflecting’ emotions other people are presenting, especially if it’s not obvious what they’re feeling, it’s worth bringing up w a psychologist/psychiatrist/therapist. They can help you work with it, and figure out why you might be experiencing symptoms. :) I hope this helped!

@@dire1031 how is this different from an empatg but that's mentally and spiritually right now what your talking about?
@dire1031
@dire1031 Жыл бұрын
@@starfar2481 Oh- what I experience is due to my mirror neurons being more active because I felt I needed to have them active in order to stay safe when I was very young. Because of that they’re ‘hyperactive’. ‘Empath’ is used to describe a person who is aware of someone’s ‘aura’ or the like, which is typically more spiritually-based, but all these things are sort of connected at the base level. The term ‘empath’ has been muddled a lot recently, though.

there is something this episode didn't get right about the condition "Mirror-touch synesthesia". The stimulus to this condition must be seen by the patient. The person with this condition has to actually see someone else getting hurt to then feel the same pain. The girl in the video with this condition wouldn't have known the doctors knee hurt and then didn't hurt after he took aleve. In Mirror-touch synesthesia, whatever is causing the patient to feel the pain of another person has to be witnessed/seen. In order for this girl to feel the doctor's knee pain, she would have had to have been psychic...

I don't have this form of synesthesia, but I do have Texture-Scent Projective Synesthesia, which means that any texture I feel puts a scent in my nose as if I were actually smelling it. As a kid, I would always tell my parents that I hated the smell of cereal, of all cereal, but they would always tell me "They all smell different, what do you mean?" It took me years to figure out that I just experienced things others didn't, and while now I have copping mechanisms to not have it constantly flooding my nose, it also took a while for me to smell what is actually there. Synesthesia is a relatively recent discovery, so it is still taking a while to understand.

I have this... V/K Synesthesia and A/K Synesthesia... I take on the emotions and feelings of others... Turns out it's a really good thing to help others to heal emotionally... but it's a nightmare to deal with until you #1 Learn what is happening. #2 Learn how to Ground yourself emotionally. This is a life saver... I just take on the emotions of others around me... I had to really learn the difference between others emotions and mine! People who are in need will just walk up to me in public and start pouring their hearts out to me about what they are going through emotionally...

People wonder way I have such a grateful attitude about life I know just how lucky I truly am. I'm more grateful for the things I don't have than the things I do.

I call it my bizarre gift but for some reason I can sense pregnancy in other women, can detect the sex of their babies and usually accurately predict the date the baby will be born. I have no clue how or why and before any pregnant women start sending me questions, either you need to have a personal connection to me or actually be in my presence for me to be able to get a read from you. Ironically, I was unable to have children of my own though.

I think I have a small premonition ability. It mostly only works on books and movies and stuff, but I can sometimes guess what's going to happen in a book or movie before we even get anywhere near that part. One time I even guessed the names of characters from a story before they were ever said. It's not much, and might just be because I have a mind for story-writting, so I'm able to guess plot twists and stuff. But it has happened a few times.

3:46 Mirror touch synesthesia is a condition that causes a person to feel the sensations of being touched on the opposite side or part of their body when they see another person being touched. While there aren't yet specific diagnostic criteria, doctors can treat the condition as a sensory processing disorder.

I can feel the true emotions of people around me. This has often gotten me into a lot of trouble, for example when someone pretends to be all nice and smiley but in reality is scheming to harm me or others. Happens more often than you think... I have never been wrong, but have never been believed. Each time I tried to tell someone that the charming, smiling person they thought was so wonderful, was in fact scheming against them or me, I got told "you are just imagining things" and "such and such is so wonderful". This has led to a lot of tragedies. So it doesn't matter how much someone is pretending to be happy or wellmeaning, I can feel their true emotions, but it's best to keep quiet about this. As for what's the difference between emotional synthesia and being an empath - none. But they have to give it the label of a mental disorder because every normal emotion is now a "mental illness".
