Hello again! Welcome back to the channel! Today I decided to do another viewer request and I'm so glad it was suggested because this movie was a staple of many a 90s Halloween.
The movie we're covering today is, of course, Casper. Released in 1995 this is the first of three live action films based on the classic cartoon Casper the Friendly Ghost.
This one definitely likes to flip flop between goofy and sappy, as many 90s movies did. Overall I liked this one, though I have to say I didn't remember much of it prior to the making of this video.
I think it's a nice addition to our Halloween content lineup so I hope you enjoy it! Stay safe, and I'll see you all in the next one! Happy Harvest Festival!

I cried a river while watching this movie and it makes me so sad that it didn’t get a sequel because it had so much potential and many loose ends, I don’t consider the other 2 Casper movies that came after this without Kat and her father because this one is definitely the most emotional and the fondest while the others were just fun

First off, Eric Idle is a treasure of a man and I love him, but I had forgotten he was in this movie somehow 😅 Secondly, I dont think I would have noticed the bag show up in the corner if you hadn't said something about it, and it definitely isn't an issue. Third, yes, I get overwhelmed with emotions by Fred Rodgers. I miss him, I wish he would come back as a ghost 🤣

thats so crazy i just watched that in the original cartoon from the 40s? or 60s? it was implied that casper was born a ghost baby to ghost parents. so in this movie they added the back story of casper having once been a human boy who passed away...the real question is how does becoming a ghost take away your pinkies ?? lol

This movie was a catalyst for marital desire in my life. I was willful at some point to keep Christina Ricci's hand, as I had parasocial sympatico with the Casper character (I was only twelve years old). This teeter totters on the edge of tragedy and comedy, as Christina and I were never able to consummate a vow of holy matrimony. I suppose I didn't really vow before God, but I exclaimed a future prospective union with her, which ultimately didn't happen. In a Casperesque world, this would be considered unfinished business, but I suppose I can be glad that Christ's authorship is better than Hollywood movie madness. So I think I can die in peace, knowing that the twelve year old me isn't caught in a time bubble of hopeless romance. In light of the turn-of-events, I would say that 'Casper' is a forgettable tragedy for any mature romantic at heart, yet a surefire comedy for the juvenile and those suspected as prone to mischief. By the way, I'm not an expert movie critic so don't quote me on that.

So this movie was one where I didn't realize it was based on a pre-existing property, meaning that when I encountered other Casper movies I was incredibly confused that they seemed to be completely ignoring the sad, serious backstory of the character XD

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. It could be that after the dad died the house got sold to the lady's dad with the note about treasure already on the deed and even he didn't know? But I'm not entirely sure. 😅

It's sad. Everyone in Casper's life died and crossed over, and every stranger he met ran away. All he wanted was for one person to stay around but no one ever did except 3 cranky and abusive ghosts.

I love this movie despite its problems. The late James Horner's score is beautiful especially One Last Wish. It makes one teary-eyed and I love the song Remember Me This Way. Its so sweet. Probably my favorites scenes were when Casper tells Kat about the day he died and when Dr. Harvey talks to his wife at the end. I think because I wasn't expecting those to be so heartbreaking and touching.

I figure the hair and clothes thing ties to how recently the person was deceased. Which ties into the general idea that the longer the ghost remains on the mortal plan not having passed on, the more they lose their identity. Something along those lines.

Carigan assumed the chest vault in Caspers dads workshop was the treasure but I think part of the point is that she was wrong. For one, the treasure letter was super old and indicates a longer history with smugglers dubloons..but Duke snider played for the dodgers from the late 40s to the early 60s..making Casper also a lot less old times than we thought..like..he may even be around Cat's dads age. Yeah. It kind of makes sense if it was just this vault in the actively used basement of a fairly recent resident that it doesn't contain the suepr old pirate treasure or perhaps they would have already liquidated it, hm? Just because the owner is eccentric and hides his workshop doesn't mean its the long hidden place of pirate gold. One could argue the Lazarus was the actual treasure if it were old times as it seems..but there were genuine super computers existing when it was invented and no..its not old enough to fit the old treasure parchment. The bad guys actually never find out that the chest only had a baseball and the sad reality is that there likely was no treasure..it either was as fake or used up long ago since this house was actively lived in up to between 20 and 40 years before the movie takes place. Abandoned a while but not to the point you'd expect by it. Since Carigan's father was a rich philanthropist, perhaps he bought it for eprosnal or historical purposes but we really don't know when he got it or if there is any relation..we are lead to think it's been abandoned for a very long time and maybe they are distant relatives who inherited it way down the line but the baseball relaly disrupts that. For hecks sake, the Duke Snider fashion at age 10 puts Casper at a range of a little older to a little younger than my dad. He is certianly younger than my grandfather.. and this came out around 30 years ago too so..yeah..set in the 90s..not the same level as Disney's haunted mansion by far. We also have NO idea who the uncles really are or where the hell they came from so that doesn't help..

this movie spun off a cartoon series , check it out. I know Casper was a cartoon before and after this but the 90s cartoon used Kat and Dr Harvey and that's the only time we see those two in animation You may also want to see the rest of the Harvey toons shows. No! Don't crush my Dreams! I wanted to go to Maine to see the moose Now I have one less reason to travel threw like 6 or so states just to view wild life. I'll have to focus on the light houses. check out the crypt keeper animated series or Elvira also Edwin Donald "Duke" Snider (September 19, 1926 - February 27, 2011) A Duke Snider single signed baseball is worth about $50. -$90. My theory as to why Casper can't crossover even after his fathers death is that he's a very special kind of ghost. Everyone is put on this earth for a reason and Casper was so sweet and friendly in life that the mortal realm could not bear to be parted from his memory when he died so young. Instead of being stuck with "unfinished business" he has a new lease on life (or should I say afterlife) of spreading friendship as a spirit.

@@Adam-lc6mk Of course! I use a Panasonic G7 to shoot all my videos and it's what I recommend to anyone starting a channel or getting into filmmaking. You can get one used for about $400 which is honestly one of the better deals when it comes to film cameras. I've found that lighting is key so I also use a couple LED panels and a standard ring light. But my setup is kind of extra so honestly you could just use natural light and one basic LED for talking head videos. I also use a directional rode mic hooked up to the ol' tascam and its annoying bag for audio. 😂 But I've also used a lav mic for a couple of these videos. They're cheaper than I expected and if you get one that plugs right into your phone it saves on buying a separate recording device. Also, if you want any tips and tricks on anything film related, I highly recommend d4darius, film riot and indy mogul here on KZbin. I never went to film school but they taught me a lot of what I know. Sorry this is probably way more info than you wanted. 😅 But also if you start a channel or make a short let me know because I'd love to watch. 😊
