I am 69 and 40s seems prime time to me. I am a lawyer and worked on a number of gay rights cases. I lost many friends to AIDS. But, I love the fact that I'm still here and life is good.

I'll be 65 in December. I was almost 10 when Stonewall happened. I came out at 22, raised in a small town by Southern Baptists. Soon, saw us being chased by baseball bats in gay bar parking lots, the fear and devastation of AIDS, the 80's!!! the shock of Angels In America, the popularity of Will And Grace, the vicious hypocrisy of the religious machine, the realization that my husband and I never think about going anywhere with fear. ..... um, WOW!

I'm 65. The only man I loved in my life didn't have courage to take on our relationship. That was a long time ago... After more than 25 years all by myself I met a 38 year young gentleman who loves me. We've been living together for two and a half years. I've survived ❤❤❤ all the prejudice of the 70's, The HIV era and had to endure all my friends death. Thirteen of them. Just one was left.I was exchanged for a woman due to social issues. Continued working... Survived the Covid! And life must go on! Greetings from Brazil

When I turned 29 (1998), I had a bit of an "I'm almost *30*" freak-out. The next year when I turned 30, I realized how lucky I was to have survived my (awful) 20s, and since then feel that each birthday is a reward/something to be thankful for. 54 now, and glad to still be here!

Being 29 is so awful. It's like, you're in the last of year or any real youth. Then you hit 30 and it's like, Wow... I'm 30. And then it's all free-fallin' fun from there! The constant aches and pains notwithstanding. 🙃

I'm 61 and my partner is 71. We've been together for 37 years. We've had an amazing life together. Unfortunately my partner has come down with Parkinson's disease and is now slowly dying before my eyes. We both survived the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and are well aware of the suffering and dying process. We lost many friends to AIDS. Watched my parents die in front of me 6 years ago and now my partner. I'm so so grateful to have found true love with him. You experience the extremes of life when you are partnered. Your highs are 20s not 10s and your lows are minus 20 instead of zero.

I use to think 30, 40, 50 were old, but now that I'm 55, I think every age is what you make it. I'm in better health and feel more vitality than when I was 40. About 5 years ago I started to put a lot more effort into protecting my health, but we all deteriorate to some extent, no matter how healthy you are and I'm no different. I'm just trying to stick around for as long as I can so I can really enjoy the fruits of my labor when I finally get to retire, but the insomnia, late night pee breaks, bad vision, etc all take a toll. The other thing is that I stopped dating years ago because I hated it. Truth is I never dated much to begin with. Gay men can sometimes be so goddamn shallow and fickle and I just got tired of the superficiality of it all, then I realized that I actually liked being on my own because it allowed me to focus on my job and saving for retirement. However, the older I get, the more I think I should get back out there and meet someone because I do want someone to enjoy my retirement years with. We'll see...

I’m almost 74 and I came out when I was 20. The 70’s were very liberating but the 80’s brought AIDS and major lifestyle changes. By the middle of the decade I discovered 12 step Recovery (Al anon) and got very involved in the program to the point where I earned a certificate in drug & alcohol counseling. I never drank did drugs or smoked so I was able to pass for much younger through my 4o’s. Then I met the love of my life and we remained monogamous. That’s when my body began falling apart. Since then I’ve had cataract surgery, developed high blood pressure and Glaucoma. I’ve also begun wearing reading glasses. I have a pair in each room and one by the door for when I go out. My partner passed away last year and most of my friends have either moved away or passed away. So my big issue now is loneliness. Thank God for gay porn!

I can relate to this as well. Had a work injury in my early 30s. Am now 55. Need a cane (on good days) to get around along with pain meds for the constant pain. Certainly never considered this when I was in my 20s. But at least I’m still here, even if it does take me a lot more time to get anywhere…

I recently turned 60 and I swear 40 to 60 flew by. A few years ago, someone asked me my age and I said, "47." Then I had to think about it for several seconds before realizing I was actually 57! I so enjoy listening to you, a handsome younger man, talk about getting "old," so funny. I remember in my forties reading a Craig's List ad from a young man talking about how attracted he was to older gay men. He went on and on about how older gay men are already established in their work. They make a good living. They know who they are. They are confident. They know how to have a deep and real relationship and so on. I was salivating thinking about this handsome young man in his early twenties who had the hots for older gay men like me! Then he finished his lengthy list with, "No one over 30!" I laughed out loud. For this twink, older gay men were 27 or 28, but certainly not over 30. Too funny. Anyway, welcome to 40. You are still SO young and SO handsome. I know it's fun to talk about your ailments, but enjoy how youthful you still are. Plus, there are handsome young men in their twenties and thirties who will totally think you are perfect for them. Enjoy!

59, graduated high school in 1983 and watched friends die during "the gay cancer" by the score. It was frightening so much that I stopped having sex at 17 and didn't start having sex again until my 30's. The love of my life, an 11 year monogamous relationship started at 37 as friends, then friends with benefits and everyone that met us thought we were a couple until one day we realized we were. When we decided to accept it, 2 days later, we found out Mark had HIV. Thanks to combivir and sustiva, he became undectectable, at least till meth took him from me. I, myself am a meth survivor, but to be brutally honest, if it shows up one day, I'm not altogether sure I can say no to it. The addictive thing about that substance is what it unleashed in me during sex. That's the addictive part. Since Mark exited my life, I've had no life, no clubs, no bars, no friends, just work, home and porn, I'm just waiting to be recycled back into the earth.

oh geez... you have so much more living to do, and look at all you conquered... from HIV/AIDS to Meth! I kicked meth 15 years ago. I was a daily user and my HIV turned to full blown AIDS. But I wasn't gonna let that win. I got on meds and have been undetectable for the last 15 years. Have you thought about joining a club or sport to meet people?

I can relate for sure about the AIDS epidemic in the 80s. I'm 61 and my partner is 71. We watched many of our friends die. We had two roommates who dies of AIDS. That was a lot of death at 24 and 34. Then my parents dies 6 years ago and recently my partner of 37 years was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. His is a rare form and compared to AIDS suffering, this is far far worse if you can imagine it. I am now his full time caregiver and still I wouldn't want to be with anyone else in the whole world. Hang in there. You could easily have 30 years left. Don't give up.

And yes Patrick, everything you said, needing glasses, happier to stay home than going out, soreness, stiffness (not just the fun kind) and your bladder ruling the night is now my world too. I am 44 and this video is exactly how I feel. I’m shocked how much my body doesn’t want to do the things it used to do. No one ever warned me this would start as soon as 40. I’m over weight and I thought it was just because of my weight but seeing how fit you are and you are experiencing similar things makes me feel a little better, and worse. I was hoping losing the weight might make it all go away. It’s all down hill from here it seems. Life is funny, you finally get wisdom and financial security right when your body starts to deteriorate. My 31 year old judo fighting fiancé isn’t feeling it yet and I keep warning him how much all those injuries he suffers now are going to hurt much worse in 10 years. Time to start coaching. We all think, it won’t happen to me, until it does. I feel you my friend. Getting older sucks. Thanks for sharing.

55 here. It's all very relatable... The thing is, when you reach middle age and beyond, a lot of us have seen it all and done it all (at least once or twice 😂). Most of us still could again, but there is a (usually very high physical) price to pay. So we often choose not to, because we don't need to prove anything to anyone anymore. We value other options more. And honestly, that's just liberating.

I'm the same age as Old People. Lots of coffee, cream and sugar, all nighters, 99¢ cheese & white bread, cigarettes, meat all colors, Coke and Pepsi, Fritos and bean dip, no reverence for marketing words "vegan" or "organic," definitely no gym. I always walked miles a day everywhere I go. If I couldn't walk there, I didn't go. More coffee. Dr Pepper. Pizza. All nighters. And of all the kids from my school who moved to New York in the 70s, I am the last one standing. Finally, peace and quiet. I can hear my film noir movie. Stanwyck is fabulous (I didn't get AIDS btw). The children have discovered Preppy, which puts my wardrobe back in style. They love maximalism in decor, brown furniture. Strike two, my place looks like an old aunty, with good taste, lives here. I like my decades of stuff. I didn't plan any of this longevity stuff. I just got lucky. Plus, I still have issues with High School.

70 y/o here - actually had to put this video on pause so much, that I ended up with 7 (handwritten) pages of notes. Re: the sleep thing - when I was much younger, I actually fell asleep, holding onto a guy riding a motorcycle, on the Interstate (for where he was taking me I do not remember) - now keep a green nightlight under my bed at night, so it lights up the floor when I get up to go pee w/o waking myself up completely by turning on the overhead light. Re: water aerobics, they REALLY are a game changer! There was a period years back, where I literally could not bend over to pick something up off the floor/ ground. After 5 years of 3 X weekly water aerobics ( and every summer in a friend's pool), I have no trouble bending over - just hope I don't fall over like Arte Johnson in the old Rowan & Martin Laugh-In Show. And my dog knows if she wants some loving from me, she has to get up on my level (usually in the recliner or in bed)

I’m 50. Yes, I hurt myself sleeping too Patrick 😂. You comment about seeing gay marriage legalized reminded me the average early 20’s gay guy doesn’t know a thing about those who paved the way for them. Ageism prevents the transfer of experience and wisdom from older gays to the next generation. For example, the AIDS epidemic and the fear of STI’s is gone. We’re right back to the carefree days of the 1970’s. I don’t know how to change this, it’s cultural, but I hope it will change one day before the sequel comes.

I’m still HIV- at 57, and I’m not on PReP, but 30 years ago I was holding the hands of friend after friend and even my neighbours because their friends were either already gone or were unable to handle the situation. We’re talking about some of the most amazing, talented and passionate friends anyone could ever wish for, and I had times when I had two or three die in one day! Now they are able to go complete bareback, and I’m not slut-shaming, but I’m hoping that they’re taking their one a day pills as instructed because it took so many people away so quickly, and I worry that if they don’t stick with taking it they could create a resistant retrovirus that will be more difficult to treat.

@@garygansbrubaker Thanks Gary, I feel like my concerns fall on deaf ears. The same reckless behavior that helped perpetuate the AIDS epidemic will strike again in another virus/disease. I hope I’m wrong. I didn’t venture into the gay world until I was 36. Even then, looking much younger than my age, I was rejected by younger guys when they learned I was old (over 30). I think it’s worse now. There is such a disconnect between age groups amongst gays that the cycle of death and blame will repeat.

I luv the honestly. I was laughing so hard because I had the same experience with reading menu. Once in my 40s, I put on contacts for vanity and forgot to bring my reading glasses. My best gf had to read out what's on the menu. We had a good laugh after. BTW, stretches are good and don't ever stop. 3 years of COVID lockdowns had ruined my flexibility! cos I didn't do stretching at all, excuses were not able to get to the gym (closed), reality was I got lazy. Now literally, I have a hard time going down on my knees... and once, I almost couldn't get (used to spring ) up and had to grab on the guy for support, soooooo mortified! 61 going on 62 (not 16, 17, lol!). I really enjoy your channel: real and honest.

For me, I stopped feeling strong and healthy once I got into my 50's. Urinating is always an emergency. Aches and pains can no longer be ignored as they are likely symptoms of an underlying condition. It's that age when the habits of your youth come back to haunt you in the worst ways possible. It was the age when I truly came to realize and fear my mortality.

Millennials are absolutely the rudest people in America. Their parents did not coach them in "please" or "thank you" or bank loans. Hold the door for a Senior with two bags of groceries? Not on your life. Say "good morning" back to me on the elevator. Learn to read. Books. Read "How to have conversations." Read-up on "Things that happened before the day I was born." How to "Work More/ Bitch Less" if you want to buy a house. The Zoomers are friendlier and hold doors, but for kids who just got to the party, they sure are bossy. They don't know how to make coffee or scramble eggs or run a copy machine, but they know more than us. Used to be the civilizing factor was in the Mom department, like scrambling eggs and stuff. Bank loans stuff. Since Feminism shouted it's arrival, Moms aren't home to civilize a cactus. Mom has hung up her apron, make your own milk and cookies. Would you respect older people? Mills are trophy brats who don't respect themselves.

I'm 64 and I was grinning during your rants becasue it is all accurate concerning aging. I'm not a drinker, but the going out is totally relatable. I'll add something about sex. I still love it and I usually climax everyday, by myself or with a hookup, being that I'm single. If I find the time, I can climax more than once a day. the difference is that I may not approach a partner or porn, being "ready". The stimulation of making out or watching a film will do the job, but when I was younger, I was ready before anything began. The tightness of the body, as you spoke about, is a constant battle. It is sort of good to hear that I'm not the only one.

I am 2 weeks away from turning 40, and I am also a gay man, but I also understand that it's a privilege getting to be 40. I could have died right after turning 30! Literally. I had cardiac arrest and am in the 3% that survived. So, that has given me much gratitude now 10 years later. I can relate to a lot of what your talking about getting older, but I just try to get to the chiropractor at least once a month. Then, my daily routine stretching and exercise. As far as my vision that's always been a struggle since middle school. Contacts has been a close friend for years lol.

Right on point with the gym. A lot of gay guys started the gym in their youth - when the body recovers from an intense workout in a day. Now in my 50's, about 75% of my routine is about recovery. 25% working out - 75% recovery. Slow and steady is the rule nowadays.

I'm about to turn the big 5-0 this week. As with many in the comments, we can all relate. I'm ok with it all for the most part. It changes your perspective, it's part of growing and prioritising your life. I don't think it is something to mourn. Your body is naturally aging as it should. You can't do much about that aside from being as healthy as you can be. Your social groups change. The ones that should remain in your life will others you will outgrow - as you should. With things like glasses, once you get past your own vanity, for me, they are another (necessary) accessory used to express yourself. The gay community is a fickle shallow community generally speaking. I've matured and not gotten old. You can still be fun as you age and remain young at heart.

Never been skinny or athletic, have weak knees, always worn glasses, always had issues with sleep, etc. I'm just realizing, from watching this, I need to maybe start doing yoga or something to keep limber. I've also always been that person who just prefers to like stay in, sweatpants on, hot cuppa, watching a good show. I had like 3 good years in college of going out Thursday to Monday, going to class still half drunk. It was fun, I'm over it. Also had like a good slut phase. These days, it's just soooo much work! 37 here and yep so much of this resonated with me. I didn't used to workout per se, just regular cardio and walking, but now I'm trying to lift some light weights a bit and do more upper body exercises and more intense squats. Sometimes I can get away with not stretching but other times, nope lol. I'm so tense that I have to stretch to make it through the routine that day haha. However, I only recently came out as gay last year, so I don't have alot of gay friends yet, but I'm slowly working on it lol. Actually I'm going to meet one of them sometime next weekend at their house to watch a movie. I've only met them once before at a restaurant and he seems really nice, so please wish me well on this journey. 😊

Heck if I bend down, I have to come back up before I get light headed! Glasses become my priority must have and my cell phone after - ha! I’ve invested in a magnifying glass now to read fine prints and out it in the drawer when friends stop by. I get a good laugh when we are all together and if we must read something, we all whip out our glasses or have contacts to read fine prints 😂.

I am 56 years old and I have seen a lot of change during my lifetime. You are so right about getting older being a privilege... it's something you can't know when you are younger. You hit on a subject with one of your comments about older people stretching.... "The funny thing is, I just never noticed them before...they must have always been there, I just wasn't looking for them, or they weren't on my radar." I know you were talking about stretching... but, you just literally described the experience of getting older. The older you get, the more invisible you become to everyone around you... especially in the gay community. The segment about glasses, absolutely I am lost without them now. In my 20's I had 20/20 vision... now, nothing without at least readers. Just last month I woke up, stretched (while still lying in bed), and threw my back out. I was out of work for almost a week. I can relate to everything you said. But I can also add this. I love myself WAY better now than my 20 year old self. I am a much better person and I am so much more secure with everyone and everything. Our bodies may give way, but wow our sense of self skyrockets! Thanks so much for the video!

Hi Patrick🤗 I just turned 53 years old on October 20th..so I’ve literally lived through the AIDS crisis in the 80’s, known a few close friends, lovers that passed away. My 30’s were my best years…no ailments, credit score went higher and higher, not feeling awkward in my own skin like I did in my 20’s, etc..then my 40’s hit….Eyeglasses at 45 with Glaucoma in my right eye that I have to take drops for the rest of my life so it won’t get worse or even travel to my left eye I have to also put a drop in my left eye once a day, bumps and/or growths just showing up all of a sudden (this dark spot wasn’t here yesterday type of crap..LMAO), grey nostril hairs..UGH, SLEEP is more of what I call NIGHTIME NAPS…although I don’t have the Peeing situation I still can’t get an 8 hour sleep in..no matter what time I go to bed I still wake up at 4:30am..been about 20 years.LMAO), grey hairs (YEP TONS OF IT especially IN MY PUBIC region that are so sporadic that I find myself shaving it ALL off…which I’m fine with…I look young in my face and I’m skinny, but then I can’t expect a twink to go down on me and see grey pubes…So I completely SHAVE IT ALL OFF. Now I’m 53 and EVERYTHING above is still going on, but now there are certain foods that upset my tummy…onions, or any color of bell pepper give me soooo much gas, diarrhea, and just tummy discomfort I generally stay away from these food items or pick them out of the dish. Well that’s all for me, welcome to being considered Middle Aged and as long as you keep your heart and your mind healthy may you have many many many more years to go. It is what it is and it’s actually more normal than people would even care to admit. I’m grateful for EVERY year that I can remain wiser and laugh my way through this thing called life. I’m ALWAYS proud to tell people my exact age (even though I have grey hair on the top of my head..I still have a full head of hair and the grey downstairs well..oh what grey hairs?..Lol and I hope that you are too. THANKS for posting.

And, yes, our bodies become less efficient at processing alcohol the older we get. It's gotten to the point with me that if I have a drink too many nights in a row, it begins to affect my sleep. Same thing with caffeine--too much and I can't sleep. We have to learn moderation the older we get and, as you say, weigh the effects or our behaviors.

And to top it all up i also just this week went for a full eye test to see if i need to wear glasses because small letters on bottles like the ones you just mentioned is so freaking small lucky i don't need now glasses but they already gave my report incase i need to wear glasses .
