I have Wing Tsun schools in London, great bunch of people, lots of drills, techniques, under pressure testing.. excellent to learn for people who are not into MMA etc. Basic classes are calm and measured, but once students reach a level they can attend advanced sessions, full of sparring. It never is so glamorous, often there is blood, boiling rooms, sweat.. there is a 100 different ways to practise, and it works really well for whatever you wanna use it. Tested it against many and different styles and never left disappointed.

People seem to forget the purpose of all Martial Arts. It has the term "ART" in it. It's a form of expression and practiced in the hopes of not ever having to use it (unless you are in organized fight, pro sports, etc.) It's more about subduing the opponent. Not beating on them. Hollywood and other Martial Arts based films have rewired people's perception on the basis of fighting. Fighting is not about beating someone down and winning, through anger. It's about defending yourself and especially the others who are in fear.

Warrior Monk at Shaolin and I quote "I don't know what's up with all you westerns thinking you know eastern philosophy or overthinking everything, kung fu is for beating the shit out of your opponent who ever or where ever that is". His words and being so close to the "source" gave me reals pause as to my preconceptions about the art part of martial arts. Not trying to tear you down just relaying something that changed my view of things.

Some of those demos are ridiculous but there are just that demos. Wing chun is actually quite effective on the street contrary to belief. If someone shadow boxed in a demo you wouldn't say boxing is rubbish because real fights aren't like that. I find it ridiculous when a wing chun or a tai chi instructor 50 plus suddenly losses to a super fit 35 year old mma fighter and everyone says Kung fu is rubbish. It's not a Kung fu issue it's a skilled conditioned fight fit person vs a skilled unconditioned non fight fit person issue.

Self defense is simple.... It is the clutter in your mind that makes it difficult..... I see all the comments about these demo's, and I agree with a majority of them.. To much flashy BS, and very little real substance... Make good use of simple basics, and you will prevail... Grow, only when your foundation is secure enough to support it....

let me first preface my answer by saying i currently practice Wing Chun and have done so for a number of years. i love this art and consider myself an intermediate/advanced practitioner. i think most people think Wing Chun is bad because most Wing Chun is bad. my sifu often says that if he were a teenager today trying to choose a martial art to pick up, he wouldn't go near Wing Chun because there are so many self-proclaimed masters on the internet. so much of the content they spew is rubbish, demonstrating poor chi sao and impractical drills, in their best effort to emulate Donnie Yen's Ip Man. i believe that, just like most traditional martial arts, the essence of fighting has been lost. things are taken out of context. all the traditional training methods are still valid, provided a student utilizes them in such a way to remember that it is a MARTIAL art (deriving from the Roman god of war, relating to combat). if we look at combat sports such as Muay Thai and boxing, the fighting aspect is reinforced and hence the student is always reminded of the context of their training. this is why we often see these arts do so well against traditional martial arts. the difference lies not in the techniques, but the methods of training. practitioners should not try to feed their ego by deluding themselves with their own grandeur of invincibility. instead, they should take an honest and practical approach to training. i agree that, trained correctly, wing chun does work in a street fight, very well in fact. the advantage it has over other traditional martial arts is that it is direct - no big kicks and long circular motions that take years to make into practical techniques. however, training to make these Wing Chun techniques is where the difference is between a poor and a good Wing chun practitioner. i had been training in Kyokushin Karate and Muay Thai for a couple of years when i started my first lesson Wing Chun. they always ended with sparring: put on your gloves and go full-contact. because i had trained other systems, i was asked by the teacher to spar with him. he went easy on me. i couldn't hit him even once. this school was not a typical Wing Chun school. it is in my honest opinion that most Wing Chun training (including Yip Man's lineage, and i know i'm going to say some things that would be considered heresy) is not so good. the lineage that i followed was Wong Shun Leung's lineage. Wong Shun Leung used to be a boxer and a street fighter before he became a student of Yip Man. he continued to be a street fighter while he started Wing Chun. because he was always fighting other Martial Artists and beating the shit out of them, Yip Man endowed him with the name "king of talking hands." my teacher's teacher (Barry Lee) was a student of Wong Shun Leung, and apparently also a street fighter. i just said that this school was not a typical Wing Chun school. what was different about this style of Wing Chun? well for one, we hardly ever did chi sao, even though i trained for three years. some people would laugh at me if i told them i had trained Wing Chun for three years and never did chi sao. only in my third year did i start to learn the second form (Chum kiu). note that many people learn the first three forms (and then the dummy form) in their FIRST year! most of the time we spent on developing power in our punching, blocking hooks (one person would come at us with boxing-hooks and straights and the other person would counter) and sparring. we have spent hours just strengthening our punch. in other words, we focused on realistic training more than what is typical for Wing Chun. that actually says more about these teachers than it says about Wing Chun. i couldn't hit my teacher because he was incredibly good at controlling the distance and controlling both of my arms. he didn't really use any trapping or other techniques we normally see in chi sao. he'd just slap or block (huen sao) my arms to the side, turning my entire body 45 degrees away from him. this way, i was always turned away from him (and therefore unable to use both arms) and out of balance. he forced me to focus the entire time on trying to regain my balance and posture, making it extremely difficult to attack back. he combined that with kicks to the knee and very good control of distance. i remember thinking: dear god, Wing Chun is amazing. Nowadays, I have a more nuanced opinion. unfortunately, i have never ever seen good Wing Chun outside of Wong Shun Leung's lineage. Check Philip Bayer for a decent example of chi sao. notice how he controls the body of his training partners and works with angles. it is difficult to fight if you're always trying to regain your posture and balance and can't see your opponent because you are being pushed 120 degrees to the side. i have trained with other people who train Wing Chun, also in other countries. i also trained with Chinese people. what impresses me most about all the other Wing Chun people is (1) they never spar, but only do chi sao, and therefore lacking in their ability to apply their techniques, and (2) that they lack power in their strikes. my teacher apparently broke someone's rib with a punch accidentally. that man had terrifying power in each strike. it wasn't just the many punches of chainpunching; you didn't want to be hit even once. each of his punches came straight from his legs. however, i never see other Wing Chun people do this. when people say that Wing Chun is weak, i guess i have to agree to a certain extent: they don't train in groundfighting. to be fair: neither does boxing or kickboxing, so this is simply the weakness of all stand-up fighting, it doesn't really apply specifically to Wing Chun. but because of Wing Chun's close range, they are especially vulnerable for clinching and getting taken to the ground. most students train only against their own style (through Chi Sao), which leaves them completely unprepared against the hooks any normal person on the street will come at you with. However, this didn’t apply to my specific school of Wing Chun, because we focused our defense on boxing-type attackers and did a lot of sparring. Chi Sao is supposed to be a training tool, not an alternative to sparring. but most students don't use it that way. most students don't learn how to use their body in such a way that their punches are strong. they train a softztyle Wing Chun. there is also hardstyle Wing Chun, for that, look up Wong Shun Leung's lineage. many students focus too much on chi sao tricks (like trapping) instead of learning how to bridge the gap, control the opponent's body (rather than his arms) and control the line of attack and defense. good Wing Chun as i learned it, is about overwhelmingly hard, quick and forceful control of the opponent, leaving him unable to defend or attack. what i would call "Good Wing Chun" actually looks a lot like Krav Maga. concluding, these are my personal thoughts about Wing Chun, which you may or may not disagree with: (1) it has a few powerful concepts and techniques that can be extremely useful for fighting and self-defense. (2) people don't tend to train it in the hard and realistic way that’s necessary for actual effectiveness. Wing Chun people need to spar and train against street attacks (hooks, low kicks) rather than training to defend against Wing Chun attacks, which hardly ever happen on the streets. Wing Chun needs to evolve together with all Martial Arts instead of holding on to its rigid traditional roots. (3) when combined with grappling (BJJ in particular) it can be extremely powerful, because of Wing Chun's focus on proximity, bridging the gap and controlling the arms. instead of asking: "is Wing Chun useful/useless?" i prefer questions like: "what can we learn from Wing Chun to become stronger?" in my opinion a lot. what good is it to call this or that useless or pathetic? try to understand other systems and then perhaps you can learn something useful. if not, then just ignore it and focus on training what you want to train. don't waste your and other people's time arguing and quarreling. it's unsightly.

I agree and Disagree at the same time. First of all thanks for commenting . This is maybe the only comment worth reading here. Secondly I d like to make it clear for you that Roman Gods are the Greek Gods with Latin Names Mars is Ares the Greek God of war and he was arround thousands of years before Romans create their gods. Now my opinion. Yes most of wing chun suck because teachers tend to want a full school of random people that want to become movie ip mans and pay than 4-5 fighters who are really good . Krav Maga is utterly bullshit arround the world except israel itself. I find philip bayers chi sao a contineus loop of the same thing over and over again I dont find it interesting at all. Your school aint the only one with these attributes. You should look up some sifus like Emin boztepe. tassos panagiwtopoulos cemil yulucku Mark stas Boehlig ( the people in the video) When you meet them and learn their ways you ll see many things differently and become to see things that look like they dont work to actually work. Wong shun leung was a fighter indeed and a very good one. He himself lost a few times. One time he got almost get killed by a chow gar master that he spared him. In my encounters with wong shun leung in my country I see wing chun living in the past but there are good practiotioner for sure.

Also, people have learned many styles before. This is not a new concept. To be advanced in any style is worthy of respect.

It is extremely hard to block the first strike (punch or kick), afterward is very easy. All of fancy demonstrations show the later part, strike back after blocking the attacks. I tell you earlier where I will punch or kick you, sometimes you cannot block the full power strike, rather you do not know which strike I will use and where I will attack you. The key is you have to know how to set a trap and guide your opponent strike as you wish.

...bridging the distance with from "before the fight" position to "infight" is therefore what we trained the most at the beginning. As soon we are in close enough for knee and ellbow, wing chun fighters will hold the better cards in this game. Getting there is the trick. It may be good if one knows how a punch feels when it hits (so you need to do some fullcontact sparring/sanda in between maybe with thin gloves) because if you learn to take the first punch, all the rest of the punches will be yours - and you still win the fight. Cannot hurt to develop some tolerance or to learn that the world does not necessary end if one hit gets through. (just protect your centerline - mansao-wusao) What do you think?

Works good at chest level. For head punches the principles don't work well. Chia sao is a (fun!) waste of time. The one range (trapping) in a fight, that has only a short time window trained at the body level, you need to defend the least. You make your entry and then it's grappling. And yes, I got hit from better WC Practitioners in sparring on their way in. Mostly elbows and head butts.

Who is the last fella in the red sweater? Those blows are illegal in MMA. Therefore, Wing Chun does not work like many traditionalist....The truth is that many Martial Arts are not design for sports. You can't eye strike, throat strike and groin kick. We see lousy sparring bc the Practitioners seem to only practice in-house. Bruce Lee understood this and trained to be well rounded. I practiced Wing Chun in 1981 under Lee Moy Shan who studied under Moy Yat (Bruce Lee's classmate). The original Wing Chun grew throughout the years. So why did it stop growing. Teachers have to look at the environment and upgrade the system to include creating a sports version.

You know karate has finger jabs to the eyes, too, & groin kicks, as well, the self defense form of Judo, Goshin Jutsu contains techniques like these, too, yet you don't see Lyoto Machida or Ronda Rousey saying they can't compete in MMA because they can't use all of their style's techniques, nope, they still want to test themselves against highly skilled, professionally conditioned fighters. So what are the Kung Fu guys' excuses, again? By the way, who said strikes to the throat are illegal in MMA? They may be difficult to apply against a moving, resisting, uncooperative professional fighter but I've never once heard they're not allowed in MMA competitions.

There is also Ving Tsun :D But to answer your question: Wing Chun was the original way to write it. However, Master Wong Shun Leung (a student of Master Ip Man) competed in a lot of street fights using Wing Chun and won most of them. At that point, Wing Chun was abbreviated as WC (the same abbreviation as toilet) and people started calling it toilet fist kung fu, so they changed the writing to Wing Tsun and later on to Ving Tsun. Nowadays, the way you write it shows to which lineage you belong to. All spellings are correct.
