Anxiety. Change your environment, find the place where you don't need to worry about anything anymore, and you are healed. Leave behind all the people who try to make you feel fear.

Hello! Awesome to hear you are starting this journey! I was wondering if your insurance covered any part of the therapy and if not how expensive it is? I am very interested in trying this out to help out with some lifelong trauma I’ve dealt with due to childhood experiences. Thank you and good luck!

I did emdr, it literally changed my life. I’d had it since 2 years old. It is a miracle, it’s unbelievable. I wish everybody in the world was required to do it because people don’t even know how traumatized they are.

I do believe it works. But keep in mind EMDR therapists typically charge very high rates (eg $400 for an hour), and it attracts practitioners who have an attitude that they are going to sort of “turn a screwdriver” and “fix” you. Foundational skills like making the client feel safe and seen (which are already too scarce among psychotherapists) may be lacking due to lack of emphasis or practice. A good EMDR therapist will have a waiting list. I haven’t found the right person.
@shakeyj4523
@shakeyj4523 9 ай бұрын
When there is no scientific evidence to support that half your therapy does anything, they have not right to charge that. The EM does nothing, and the DR has been around for decades. Shapiro was a second rate psychologist and a first rate marketer. What you are seeing is good business, not good therapy.

An issue I have found is that extreme masking, and dissociation really, severely hinders EMDR. My therapist tried it with me about a year ago, and I couldn’t release myself from my binding (masking) enough for it to take effect, and my brain would not be engaged enough ie, I would dissociate. Even though we had spent months previously trying to give myself the tools to not dissociate. I also have a very weak minds eye (ie imagining/envisioning things, is hard for me.), and much of my trauma is now buried. 15-20yrs ago, it was at the surface, but after 15-20yrs of burying it to get on with life and raise kids as best I could, the events (of which there are many) are so deeply integrated, that I feel the pain physically, but am entirely removed from the event. EMDR was something that excited me so much, because I heard all these amazing stories. It did not work for me, yet. I am in the process of starting ISTDP therapy, and hopefully that will get things moving, and maybe I can return to EMDR.

I think that in some cases therapy can work but if anxiety etc.. is caused by physical/ chemical issues and genetics its like asking a person with a broken leg to move their limb in a different way to treat their issues. It denies the physical causes of these issues because of the automatic dualistic mentality that we all have about the mind, which is really the physical brain. All therapy does not have good evidence because you cannot have good trials for it. The patient knows they are receiving a specific treatment, there is no placebo control. When you follow these patients 2 years post therapy regardless of what king >90% are right where they started off.

EMDR does work for some, for others not. One shouldn't advertise any method as a panacea or a miracle cure. For some people trauma can go together with deep existential processes that their soul may have come here to go through at the deepest possible level and to 'remedy' it or aim to clear symtoms away, may not actually be in the highest interest from a soul perspective. We are all different and should always be aware that when we meet others and ask "what is this human experiencing and what is the divine will in all this, can I be of any help as a giver or reciever here, please holy spirit show me" and then engage in whatever method or technique we're into.

He’s spreading some falsehoods about psychedelics, bad trips are not necessarily bad for you. I had one this summer unexpectedly in Nepal. It is very frightening when you are going through it, but the effect it has on your life as a whole is what you make of it. For me it fast forwarded me to the last moments of my life and I had to confront the things I was avoiding that were holding me back. The scary part of it was losing control and feeling like I could die at any moment.

I grew up in Alaska but have lived away for many decades. I’m sorry to hear that when Alaska surely needs good care as much or more than any place in the states. I remember health care generally sucked back in the 80s and 90s when I was involved with family there. My grandma would come stay with me in Seattle to get healthcare. And I can imagine, also, that the “rugged individualism” machismo along with alcoholism as typical can really make it hard to even realize your trauma. Sending you big love as you prioritize your self care and healing.

trauma is pretty much anything/experience that chips away or ruins your fundamental sense of safety. Loose definition but hope that helps.

Some examples would be sudden big changes like death, a breakup, being attacked, failing at something or long term things like a bad relationship or work environment etc. Basically if you feel it chipped away at who you are, it could be trauma.

I started EMDR with a therapist and she and her advisor (they have to have one regardless of their seniority) decided to end it because according to them I wasn’t processing it well enough and would fall into a dark space and retraumatize…I disagreed and wanted to continue but they just wouldn’t. Months later I do feel I have a more calm nervous system so while I had some touch and tear ridden sessions, the positive effects took a while to set in. Pity that the psychologists of today are so fear ridden and not letting the patient riding it out.
