Just a heads up, if you start to notice penetrating damp on the exterior walls it's likely a result of using gypsum plaster, you may not have those problems but generally older buildings are made with lime plaster for a reason (breathability). Have a watch of Peter Ward to get a better idea of what I mean.

I know you both never realised how long it was going to take, but you have to be so proud of the work you've done, and to the high spec you've also managed. If the downstairs looks as good as the upstairs, this is going to be one amazing home. And you've managed to do it while the country has been dealing with the pandemic too. So, hats off to you for getting so much done.

Well, we bought out home last Halloween 🎃 it's a one bedroom apartment and we've been renovating the bathroom and kitchen and with Covid, and workers not being able to come in etc it's taken longer than we anticipated, found some unexpected surprises along the way too... But in the end we're finally at the plastering stage, and soon for the tiling. (Exciting stuff) and the kitchen is commencing too. (It's very tiny though) then we're blocking off a doorway and making the tops of other doorways into arches as well. Lots of time, money and some unexpected surprises and hurdles along the way. Congratulations 🎊🎉 on Finishing part for your home 🏡

I don't understand why you didn't buy a new, very modern house? Once you starting stripping out lathe and plaster, fireplaces etc. it is no longer an old house of character. It is possible to modernise the essentials, without destroying it's individuality and history.
@BARBSTER360
@BARBSTER360 3 жыл бұрын
We actually uncovered the fire place, exposed all the original brick work and original wood work. All of which was covered up and we had no idea excised until we started doing the work. Therefore I believe we have added far more character and history to house. Also, the location was a main selling point as it is in the middle of nowhere and we didn’t want a ‘new build’ in an estate surround and over looked by neighbors. We wanted a house with history and character in the perfect location and that’s exactly what we have and are so proud of it. This is our house, our style and our wants and needs. We are not doing the work to impress anyone else aren’t from ourselves.

@spencerwilton5831 3 жыл бұрын
BARBSTER360 ignore the idiots. You have done a fantastic job. You kept the important period features and ripped out all the rubbish. People don't understand there is nothing "character" about a badly installed 1960's bathroom and flimsy partition walls. They have also probably never had to contend with lath and plaster ceilings that have come detached from the joists and started to sag, or try and strip and paint decades old skirting of no particular merit. You made a great call on what was kept and what was removed, you have a fantastic home that's exactly what you wanted and you have vastly improved the place for the next owner.
@BARBSTER360
@BARBSTER360 3 жыл бұрын
@@spencerwilton5831 thank you very much for this! It nice that you actually understand the process of what we have done and why we had to do it. When we first got the house we didn’t think we would have to do some much to it but once we started it was a constant knock on effect to the next thing and before we knew it everything had to be replaced! And yes we did really try to keep the main characteristics of the house by giving all that a new lease of life and like you said removing all the bad sagging plaster and bad 1960s bathroom! We are so proud of what we have done and really appreciate your comment 👌🏻

It's a lovely job for a modern house but the old building had character and yours now has very little! Be ready for the issues with dampness as your walls can no longer breathe...
@sallygardiner7150
@sallygardiner7150 2 жыл бұрын
@@possel4747 Very good point. Old houses do need to breathe. Many old houses don't even have foundations. Our house was originally built in 1640, and then "modernised" in 1740. Packed earth under the floorboards downstairs. Dry as a bone.... They also can move, and re-settle. A whole row of Georgian houses in the City of London, escaped bombing raids in WW2 because they would re-settle - everything around them was in ruins.....
