Almost 59 now, I have been fasting and eating low/no carb for about 9 months now. I will do a 48 hr once a month and a 36 hr every week, OMAD in between time. My weight went from 235 to 175, blood pressure down to normal and the big one, a reduction in Triglycerides, my dad is Type 2 and I want nothing to do with that. Anyone just getting into this, it is tough at first, hunger pangs can be quite persuasive. Stick it out however and it gets much easier to continue when the results are so positive.

I am 69yrs 6 months. Gained 22 kg during lockdown. Not moving, became depressed. Took antidepressants which slowed my metabolism. I started out on eating 6 oz of salmon a day and a piece of fruit. Now on day 5 , I am doing 1 day of water fasting. I am very thirsty this morning, have had 3 cups of herbal tea,I cup black coffee ( it helps ketosis). It is recommended to drink 2 to 3 litres of water a day. I plan to not eat until I feel hungry, be it tomorrow or in 3 days time. I have been sedentary too long. When loose my fat and return to 52kg or 54 kg I will be able to fit into my good clothes.

@@miguelmejia4656 → I only just now saw your response so this is a bit delayed. I was told I have Type-II. At age 71 I've known this for 10 years (since surgery to have my whole colon removed). I was at blood sugar of 180+ fasting and 412 at ½ to 1 hr after eating. My BMI was in the overweight class. A1c was 8.8 and has been as high as 14.4 2 years ago. BP was 150+/90+ (some variance) Pulse 92. Triglycerides 927. HDL 30. LDL Terrible acid reflux that prevented me from sleeping often. So I figured that drastic measures are needed. For my conditions I was taking lisinopril for BP, gemfibrozil and glemiperide for elevated triglycerides. A month ago, 4 months after start of regiment, I had a medical check up for the Type-II which the doctor calls me in for every 6 months. At that time blood was drawn. My new stats: sugar 98 that morning, Gets up to 142 at 1 hr after eating in last few weeks but comes down fairly fast, BMI 23.5, A1c 5.6, BP 112/68, pulse 69, Triglycerides 231 (needs to come down under 149), HDL 77 (should be > 39), absolutely NO acid reflux since begin of low carb diet. The results, according to the PA, are remarkable and I was able to regale her with the whole story. She said she would check into some of the statements I made such as "you can't eat too much of the good fats" and "salt is very good for you". I stopped taking all meds. I haven't even taken an ibu or aspirin for years. I have pedaling device under my desk and pedal when I'm at the PC - the Inmotion e1000. @@caronamala438 → please see response to Miguel. I consider mine a true success story. The only problem is that I have only 2 pants left that won't fall off and my wedding band has fallen off a few times. I had been in size 38 territory and a month before I decided to do this I had purchases some shorts. Even 34s are getting loose now. The old clothes will end up at GoodWill. I never wore some of them. Another thing that sort of bothers me is that I can not hold cold things, not even a can of tomato juice. My fingers freeze too fast. I wear pot mittens to take stuff out of the freezer. Also, I've tried drinking a cocktail now and then and it gets me tipsy in a hurry. Not much fun. Back in the day I did my share of drinking so it's not as if I don't know how. I know this is not for everybody. At the beginning I told myself I would fast for 10 days or until my fasting sugar came under 100. That only took 5 days. Some of the things I enjoyed don't even interest me anymore - bread, potatoes, beer, and many carb "foods" which are really not necessary for the body. I recommend youtubing Dr. Fong, Dr. Ken Berry, and many others to get the last 15 years' of research from all over the world. These people are not selling anything, they just want to make us healthy. I have been intermittently fasting on a daily basis (used to do 16/8, whereas I now do OMAD - around 20-22 hours fasted everyday) for about 2 years. I used to drink black coffee while fasting as 1) I love coffee and 2) it's a powerful combo when combined with the intrinsic mental clarity and efficiency that fasting enables. However, after watching Dr Rhonda Patrick on the Joe Rogan Podcast where she explained that anything other than water starts the timer so to speak on the digestive enzymes that work within the body, I opted for water only. It makes sense when you consider that coffee obviously has to be processed and broken down in some way for the polyphenols to aid in autophagy etc. I'm unsure if this has any impact on the effectiveness of fasting but just thought that it is worth noting. I would be interested to hear your thoughts Thomas. Either way, fasting is an incredibly powerful tool that has truly changed my life. Happy fasting everyone x

Very useful stuff. Two questions on this: 1) When you say lemon and lime juice, does this incorporate cordial with added water - or pure lemon and lime juice? 2) Do supplements such as vitamin D and multivitamin tablets break a fast? Thanks!
@JC-li8kk3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t recommend taking vitamins on an empty stomach. You should be okay for a few days without them. Your body will digest the vitamins stored in your fat.
@Yosetime2 жыл бұрын
Vitamins and supplements should always be eaten WITH real food. That way the body recognises them as nutrients and will process them properly. There may be some exceptions but when you think about breaking a fast, just remember that whatever forces your body to start it's digestive system is breaking a fast. With regards to the lemon and lime juice, he means adding a little fresh lemon or lime, or even the concentrated stuff, to your water. NOT pure juice alone.

Why have you never discussed the problem and dangers of drink teas while fasting. The tannins in teas can cause serious nausea and upset stomach. This is well documented and I have experienced it myself, to the point where I almost blacked out. I follow a lot of your content and for the most part it is great, but in the same way, following your advice... I almost blacked out one day when drinking tea before breaking my fast. Hope to get your take on this.

Ok so Silk Unsweetened Almond milk has 30 Calories and 1g Carb in 1 cup(8 oz), So if you were to put 1Tbsp of that in your Black Coffee it would only be around 2 Calories so why would it not be allowed?
@deborahannelindley71174 жыл бұрын
could it be about the enzyme effect it has on your body, I may be wrong but I don't think it's about the calories but about keeping your body using your fat store as an energy food, and certain foods will interfere with this process so set your system back and it will maybe have to reset again?

@@ThomasDeLauerOfficial Related keto question: On days that you don't feel like consuming as many calories, is it okay or advisable to lower your fat macro% and increase your protein % to keep your protein intake relatively stable?
@ng4296 жыл бұрын
@WingMeTips i've heard so many conflicting recommendations on this (maybe @Thomas DeLauer wil see this part) from .7g * lean mass being recommended to any negative effects really only showing up at extremely high levels like 2.2g (2 keto dudes presentation at a conference, they didnt recommend that intake just that that was more of a maximum to avoid) all the way down to recommending not much more than like .4g/lb because of mTOR activation and all kind of things (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqrPe2OFhMiChMk). personally, if I get more than about .8g/lb lean I dont feel quite as well as the same number of calories with lower protein, higher fat. Dr Berg recommends less because he counts autophagy as a part of protein metabolism. its just completely not a simple question and it varies even further based on goals, weight loss vs muscle gain.

I just watched Dr Fung video on fasting. He disagrees with you on creamer & bone broth. He said you can even have up to 500 calories & it may only slightly raise your insulin but it will soon come back down. But to play it safe, I’m steering clear of it.
@baphomilk3 жыл бұрын
i guess it just depends on what your goal is with the fast! if its for a gut reset or autophagy its probably better to avoid them. if its to get into ketosis or lose weight, it should be okay. but at the end of the day its not a really big deal, and if someone really loves cream in their coffee they shouldnt restrict themselves too much :)

Use ACV and properly made sauerkraut and heal your gut. Heartburn medicines are H2 blockers and disrupt your gut-they hide symptoms but allow worsening of gut dysbiosis, which is a severe imbalance of good vs bad gut bacteria. An Australian doctor proved that untreated gut bacterial infections cause 100% of later seriously acute gut issues (mouth, esophageal, bowel cancers) You can fix this risk by healing your gut. No more masking agents. Thomas teaches good gut health practices. Also note-many reflux issues come from the bacterial overgrowth also, and or consuming food allergens.

@Yosetime2 жыл бұрын
Just get ones that don't have any added vitamins like Vit C (because the body sees that as food), or any added sweeteners that are not on the keto approved list. There's lots of electrolyte powders out there. The ones that are JUST electrolytes will not break your fast and will actually help you. Also, just adding some pink salt or sea salt to your liquids will help keep your electrolytes balanced. Don't be shy with the salt! But NEVER use regular table salt that is iodized. That stuff will kill you! Always a pure mineral salts like pink or sea salt. Use a grinder and you're good to go.

I didn't mean to imply it was bad, I should've been more articulate, my understanding is it isn't spiking my insulin so it isn't breaking autophagy and keeps me fat adapted allowing me to burn more fat through the day. So while it technically breaks my fast, my understanding is that it isn't harmful and is in fact helpful for fatties like myself. :)

After about 15 days fasting on water and ginger water, I also add a special water mix of boiled red, green and bok choi cabbages that I boil up (roughly 1 Kg mix chopped up into 5lt of water boil down to 2lts) and drink 250ml if that a day there after. This increases the bacteria in the gut and stops the good bacteria die off..
@Yosetime2 жыл бұрын
Why on earth would you do a 15 day water fast? That's very extreme and unnecessary. There's no point having good gut bacteria if there's nothing in the gut to digest. I hope, a year after you made this comment, you are still alive and well.
