This is a game where the multiple-endings are integral to the gameplay and story.

Heard about this game and I knew I had to try it out over 10 years ago, my first visual novel. It set the bar pretty high. I always loved choose your own adventure books as a kid, so when I heard this game had a great story with multiple endings, I gave it a shot. When I got my first bad ending, I immediately had to go back in and start again. Playing through this game blind was absolutely amazing, this is one of my favorite games of all time, the story, the characters, the music, the puzzles, the twists... they all blew my mind. VLR was great too, I have replayed 999 and VLR countless times. The third one was good for the most part but the ending sucked ass. Even though 999 was ported multiple times, DS version is without a doubt the best way to experience this game, I loved how it took advantage of the hardware to pull off some amazing things I never saw coming. The iOS port was text only and removed the puzzles. And the console ports make it one screen only and although I've never played it and only saw a few videos, the "Adventure" mode seems to remove the narration altogether, which I'm sure people have used because they don't like reading, even though the writing in this game is incredibly strong. I might find my cartridge and play through this game again.

Finally played this on PS4 since this and Virtue's Last Reward bundle was on sale. And oh boy, this game is fantastic. Bout to start VLR, but I'm loving the story.

This is two years late maybe, but if you ever feel like replaying the game, try to do it with DS version. VLR was made for Vita among 3DS so it did not try to be fancy but 999's re-release removed an important aspect while adding better fidelity and voice acting to the mix. You can guess what it is with the ending that I am talking about but it really comes together beautifully on DS, especially the last puzzle, weird and gimmicky it may be judged too. The negative side is slowness for sure, the DS version has fixed text scroll you are allowed to speed up and skip only on subsequent playthroughs, going through different route and what not. Not sure did PS4/vita/pc version make the one reveal more obvious for you. By time I played the version... Twice even, I had already played DS original when it was somewhat fresh. It really sneaks on you in DS version. Also, not sure but the text in DS version has a unique quality.... Though, as I think about it, maybe the whole is still great no matter the version, but I am somewhat sure the basic idea of the game comes through in DS version. It is somewhat weird compromise that the new version pulls off still. Also, if you ended up playing up to the third game, I am sorry as much as everyone else is. If not, you do not have to, you can trust me. I am random anime avatar on internet after all.

That poor guy with the bad comment at the end. He must have a poorly functioning brain to be unable to appreciate a game like 999. Bet he spends thousands of hours on CoD or GTA V.

Some of us expect a game to have a certain degree of interactivity to set it apart from a book or a novel, that doesn't make us unable to appreciate good stories. I played and loved the likes of Silent Hill 2, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and NieR: Automata and never played nor cared for CoD or GTA, but even then I don't have any interest in visual novels. To me, gameplay is always more important than story and striking a good balance between them is the mark of a great game.
@AceTobin4 жыл бұрын
@@geraq0 the zero escape, ace attorney and danganronpa series clearly have gameplay though. I think there is a clear difference between actual pure visual novels like steins Gate or clannad and these games. All three of those series are on my list of favorite games ever.

@@geraq0 That's OP being an asshole, but it also gotta be said that people simply at times seem unable to take things for what they are. 999 is a perfect example of an interactive VN, essentially a middle ground between VN and point and click adventure in Ace Attorney style (which is already very VN-ish). Of course, expecting the wrong thing ruins thing but... Eh, whose fault is that? RE1 Is a fucking game change product, but if you go in expecting something like Silent Hill you would be bummed

Im playing the game now, and I have done already 2 endings, Sub and Safe endings. In my opinion, I simply can take that I have to do a bad ending so easily, and how many things you have to do in order to get an ending that satisfied you. Well, I dont know you people, but I usually dont like endings where everyone simply get... Well... It would be a spoiler(I guess), but I guess those who have played it know what Im talking about.

I liked Zero Time Dilemma, but that didn't stop me from having some major issues with it. Namely a couple of plot threads from VLR just getting dropped completely. With that said, there are a few standout moments, and the game itself was still fun. 999 is probably still the best of the lot though.

Nought Mugen You would not be. I try to keep them as short as I possibly can, and every time I start out with wanting to make a 10 min video. But they just keep ending up this long. While I don't like the look of this game, I appreciate and respect it. I'd prefer more guns and a couple of car chases, but on a sinking cruise that's not a good idea. The concepts sound interesting; the storytelling, the story itself, how the characters break away from their stereotypes and how you go about progressing is all fine.... but I wouldn't be able to sit through all that without, well, guns and cars. Fist-fantastic video as always! Your 999 review gets a 9/9 from me! Why 9? Because 11's already been taken and I'm too lazy to give 10 points. And it fits with this video. I'll go now.

Love this game. Couldn't get through more than 2 endings in the sequel though. There are too many stupid slow unskippable cutscenes and there's so much recycled dialogue, that again, you can't skip.
@VarionusNW3 жыл бұрын
The introduction of the flowchart to VLR in the PC port makes this issue mostly moot. Also it's a visual novel, they aren't really cutscenes, thats the bulk of the game. I think the characters and voice acting makes most of the actual story moments enjoyable.
@ivanivanovic58573 жыл бұрын
@@VarionusNW I'm mostly talking about the 2 minute long cutscenes showing you just walking from one place to another, no dialogue, just "boop boop boop boop boop boop, vroooooosh, boop boop boop boop boop" and these cutscenes happen whenever you go anywhere. And when Alice goes missing, you get this cutscene like 4 times in a row. And in every single path, the dialogue is almost all exactly the same, except because you're on a different path from before, you can't skip. The flowchart is in the PS4 version too and it didn't help. I kind of doubt that you've even played the game to be quite honest if you think all the dialogue in every path was different and memorable.
@VarionusNW3 жыл бұрын
@@ivanivanovic5857 I've played the game twice in fact and don't really think either of the issues you complain about were really that present. I've played games where repetition between routes was an issue, and where interstitial cutscenes were a constant slog, but I can't say that they were issues at all in VLR. Correctly using the flowchart, repeating scenes basically rarely happened. That is kind of why the flowchart mechanic exists in the first place, since repetition of content was the main issue with Ever17, an earlier VN by Uchikoshi that VLR does not hide copying ideas from. If you want a game that really has unskippable repeats, play that one.
@ivanivanovic58573 жыл бұрын
@@VarionusNW Mate you're chatting out of your arse. The map cutscenes were way too long and were unskippable, the 3d graphics were worse than the original game and character facial expressions never matched the situation they were in, dialogue was recycled across multiple the routes, and you can't skip it whenever you go to a new route even though it's the exact same dialogue you've already seen in another route, and the characters' decisions in the AB game were nonsensical and poorly justified.

Your colon seems to be a busy place, and you really shouldn't store DS games there. ^_^ To some extent I was a little disappointed with the lack of interaction when finally actually trying the visual novel genre proper, I do think clue/puzzle manipulation enhances the experience than without it. However I've noticed a certain belligerent illiteracy in gamers where even control prompts get ignored because "redding iz 2 hard", video games are not books but I've watched 10 mins of gameplay turn into an hour because players refuse to read ever.
