Per episode I don’t think Andor is getting any more money than Fett or Kenobi. Shooting in the “box” vs location might make a big difference in how far you can stretch that budget. From what I understand the “box” is expensive. Also at the end of the day the writing is just better, and that comes from a place of love and inspiration for the writer.

What I'm loving about Andor is that I feel like I am watching a book. I get so much detail, background and mystery. Andor is not some copy paste story structure. Movies and TV shows don't usually don't have the time to development every character. So, I know when we get character development on a certain character, they're dying in the coming conflict and 9 out of 10 times I am right. With Andor I have no idea what is about to happen and I love it! I am getting to know so much about all these characters and really feel connected to all of them! All while knowing, by the end, I will probably be in tears because they're not all making it out and I have no idea who that'll be.

As a story writer I appreciate the slow burn. It builds the world and characters and it helps you get to know them. Any good story has a slow build up. Heck, the first hour (or more!) of Fellowship of the Ring is "slow". But it works. It sets the foundation for everything else. I find we have got to be too locked into "it's only entertaining if there is action." I think it is a byproduct of our culture were we are used to getting everything when we want it. We have lost the art of being patient and enjoying the journey. Remember when we used to have 20 to 24 episodes of a show in a season? Not every one of those episodes was action packed but as long as it told a good story, I didn't mind.

It's not like having instant action would have solved the problem. See what the first episode of Rings of Power contains. Action scenes almost right off the bat. Clumsily-edited, poorly-choreographed action scenes. Did much good saving the pacing of that show, huh?

I'm all for slower pacing but this episode did absoultly nothing. It set out with the intentions of creating more tension and to further character development for the rebel group. It failed in my opinion. I dont care for the group any more than I did and I'm not more tense about the mission than I was before this episode. It's hard to feel tense when the wider reprocussions and what could go wrong are not explored. Additionally ask yourself do you care for any of the other rebel members other than andor anymore than you did prior to this episode.

I love it because the galaxy has been eliminated of jedi so who is there to lead the fight other than ordinary people stepping up to do extraordinary things. Episode 6 is going to be huge since there's so much tension ready to explode. 😊

As someone who wasn't on board with the slow burn concept, this was the episode that convinced me. The 40 mins went by in a flash and left me wanting more which hasn't happened with Star Wars in a long time. I also think that Luthan's assistant has given a really underrated performance so far the best side character in what has been some great acting so far.

I actually caught myself wondering, during that Luthen scene, whether or not his "assistant" was actually his wife, or something like that. Because she was doing some straight-up "wifery," in that scene, by browbeating him like she did. lol

@@jacob4920 Yes, I got the same vibe. Hard to tell whether it's just a bond they've created by sharing the secret of the rebellion or whether there is something more to it. Whichever it is, it's clear she is fully on board with the cause, think about the scene in episode 4 where she distracts the driver.

The actress killed that performance of the character in every scene throughout the entire series. Her well-timed glances, her tonal inflections, her gestures. Love all these characters. Just a well written, casted, directed and acted show.

While the axe forgets is a great line I just wanna say that "a surprise from above is never as shocking as one from below" is probably the single greatest line in favor of the Rebel Alliance in star wars. It's a perfect embodiment of how the rebels fight and the lines they are given when they're recruited

This show is building tension brilliantly. It is taking such a different approach and I’m loving it. Andor sharing that he is being paid was about the first time someone has been open and honest so far...so far everyone has been hiding things and speaking in shady terms.

Basically how Han Solo eventually joined the rebellion. In Episode IV, it's all about the money for Solo. I think every Star Wars fan can appreciate Andor's personal motivation, if they just think it over for a minute.

Thought the scene with the Lt. getting the men to ask if they could delay their task so they could see the eye event, rather than him "ordering" them around thus possibly causing suspission was brilliant. They played straight into his hand.

To be honest I’m surprised by how much I’m enjoying this series. You maybe missed a scene with Lt. Gorn when he was on a bridge overlooking the landscape and an officer who was staring at it asked him about it being destroyed for a mining operation. Moments like that are something I’d never thought I’d see in a Disney Star Wars with two imperial officers having a chat about the impact they have. This humanising of “bad guys”, it’s quite incredible.

Surprising to me, Andor is probably by favorite Star Wars show and probably the best thing Disney Plus has made. It’s the first thing that feels like a premium streaming show. I like all these scenes fleshing out characters and setting up the pieces on the board. It feels like competent people are behind the scenes and this show is where all the money went. Diego Luna really sells every scene he’s in.

Same here, andor is totally my favorite thing ive seen on disney+. And its Not just diego but pretty much all the actors in this do a fantastic job and are well directed. The set design music, lore all is done fantastically and naturally. And i completely agree this feels so much higher in quality from essentially all other disney+ series ive seen. Even from other streaming services... i mean just compare this to the rings of power. Both are slow burns that focus more on characters. With rings being a billion dollar production... and its done a worse job at everything its done compared to andor wich has what A 10th the budget of rings?

I love that they are flipping the script with TIE fighters in this show; taking the TIe's cool and iconic sound effect and flicking some switches and turning some dials and making it one of the most menacing and oppressing sounds I've heard in Star Wars, or in general even.

I’m really enjoying the character study and look at what the Empire’s rule does to the people of the galaxy. I wouldn’t want every show to be this, but it’s a nice exploration of why the Empire is so hated. Also the show managed to make one single tie fighter scary. That’s no small accomplishment

It has managed to make the badguys more threatening and competent too. Almost all badguys in starwars with some exceptions have all been idiots and this has been the case for a while now.

@@TheBenjaman The part that frustrated me, was in the first season of the mandalorian, they made it canon in universe that stormtroopers were incompetent idiot who can't aim. You even have a scene with 2 scout trooper trying to shoot something on the ground 3 feet away from them and they can't hit it. In the bad batch they keep saying how much the new stormtrooper are terrible and useless compare to clone... I GET IT ! a stromtrooper bump his head on a door in a new hope and now they're just freaking idiots. Can we please move on now ?

I understand anyone who found this episode boring, but to me, this episode was so immensely satisfying. This is the first Star Wars product in a while that I have REALLY been looking forward to, so even after Kenobi (a show I had NOT been looking forward to and had been nervous about from the get-go), my expectations for this show had been quite high. So far, this show has FAR exceeded my expectations and each episode leaves me with a massive smile on my face. After how episode 3 has paid off the first two episodes, I have little doubt that episoe 6 will pay off all this world- and suspense-building of the last two episodes, but beyond the writing and suspense of these "arcs", I think it's the slice-of-life scenes that really do it for me. It makes the Star Wars universe feel more real than it ever has, which is something that I enjoy a lot about Sci-Fi. Deep Space Nine is the best Star Trek for me not simply because of the Dominion War, but because it spends all that time exploring the human cost of that conflict (or rather, the Ferengi cost, in the case of Nog), and because it has spent all that time exploring Bajoran and Cardassian culture and characters to really make us care. Battlestar Galactica was also enriched by any scene they put in that explored the culture of the colonies and the impact of the Cylon war on the simple people who were NOT a part of the military, and the final seasons suffer from an absence of those slice-of-life scenes. Andor does a great job humanising the Galactic Civil War by humanising its characters, including a character like Mon Mothma who has been only a two-dimensional archetype so far (not hating on her previous appearances, she never needed to be more than that with her limited screen time, but I definitely enjoy watching her become an interesting character with her own struggles and issues after all these years), and by showing the cost and difficulty of resisting the Empire, but also the heroes and villains on both sides. After using Cyril Karn as pretty much a butt-of-a-joke type antagonist, I now actually felt bad for the guy in this episode, and I can't help but feel infected by the enthusiasm and diligence Dedra and her assistant show for righteously hunting down what in their eyes are criminals and threats to the New Order of the Galaxy.

I always thought of Syril as an antagonist, but not a villain... a villain is an actually bad/evil character that must be defeated or overcome... an antagonist doesn't have to be bad/evil but just counter to the Hero's mission or purpose. I think the call to "Uncle Harlow" by Syril's mother... is how he gets into being with the Imperials

I don’t think they’ve overplayed the distrust. When we first met Val, Luthen said of her team something like “if you can call them a team” which I took to mean they didn’t much know or trust each other. It wouldn’t make sense for them to just accept Andor after a bit of initial fuss. I think it’s much more likely that their distrust would fester and boil over in a variety of ways. It’s not like they’re having the same argument over and over, each time there’s some new revelation either into Andor himself or about the team members. Given the high stakes and their nerves, I totally buy that figuring out the new guy by pushing his buttons or by digging into his stuff would indeed be happening at this point. Plus it all culminates into a bit of a climax and they get enough (even if incomplete) answers about Andor for me to believe they can let it go for now and focus on the mission.

I personally couldn't watch much of the Expanse because I felt the characters were dry and unrelatable (just my opinion). But in Andor I genuinely feel a connection towards these guys and can take a full episode's worth of conversation because its so well written. And yeah I agree when the action does come we'll be way more emotionally invested

This arc has been leading up to an attack that I think everyone with more than one working brain cell knew was coming in the third episode. We'll get some straight up action, just like we (kinda) did in Episode 3, when that particular arc came to fruition. I'm onto the formula by this point, and so that helps me to be patient.

The Expanse went the other way by introducing three different stories each with its own characters and then have then intersect later on in surprising ways. It's up to personal taste on which you'll like. I enjoy both shows for their unique approaches to storytelling.

It is interesting to see how this episode particularly develops something that has been with us since 'A New Hope' - the life in miniature, small scenes of family life, eating together and discussing the future. That's what happens at the very beginning of ANH where Luke discusses his future (going to Academy, working at the farm, etc.) over a meal. Now repeated in three different settings: Andor and his co-rebels, Mon Mothma, and Syril and his mother. Sure enough, the episode was a little slow, but this seems to be the rhythm of the show: twice slow/once fast. Some people compare the slowness to other Disney era shows, but in this one I feel the writers actually know why they're taking this route. Another really great thing is writing. The dialogues are as real as it gets. Some fine wisdom here and there "It's too random to be random." Compare with the Rings of Power dialogues with quenching thirst with sea water, the rocks and paper ships, storms within, and the rest of ... nonsense, frankly.

A show with a tone like this is best watched in bingeable chunks. I'd consider myself a patient person with reasonable attention span, but I can recognize that this isn't the most riveting structure, and it's keeping it from its true potential. This is how Andor would've felt if they didn't drop 3 episodes at the premiere. I think Disney should consider the lukewarm reception from some fans, and while they absolutely need to make shows like this, they should release or structure the episodes differently. They should take shows on a case-by-case basis instead of always doing weekly drops, one episode at a time.

I absolutely love this series do far, am so glad they went more character based. The worldbuilding that this brings to the universe is also fantastic and well needed. Grounds everything. And i love the 3 episodes mini-arcs this series does. they all can be watched as thier own little standalone movies, makes it better for rewatching purposes. Wich ive done 3 times already for the first 3 episodes. This series is already my favorite disney+ series, like it more then mando, bad batch, clone wars season 7 and especially kenobi and boba's book.

One of the best aspects of this episode is how we see a dichotomy of the “axe forgets”. On the one hand the empire has hurt many and forgets them, which in turn creates the rebels. However, the rebels in their quest against the empire do the same. We have Syril who is going to become a villain and Andor will have forgotten who he is, because killing imperial loyalists is just “another Tuesday” The axe forgets.

After it finished I felt like it only had been 20mins tops. I really love that they believe in the viewers ability to hold tension and to really dive deep into the world and the characters without constant bombardment of action and spectacle

I told myself I would not engage in any new Star Wars projects but after hearing so much about Andor from this channel and others I caved and watched it. I love this series so far. Slow burns that are properly built up and are using the time they have effectively makes me appreciate the series. The visuals are much better and the story is just way better than anything Disney has made besides the final arc of The Clone Wars. I think if I watched the series week to week it would irritate me a little but watching these 5 episodes together it is really well done. I assume we might get more stories like Andor where we are following the rebellion closely. The rebellion was never characterized super well in the movies, so having them be built up more will probably have me enjoying it as much as I enjoyed how The Clone Wars animated series made me appreciate the clone army.

This week was the first one since TLJ where 3 things happened: I was actually looking forward to an episode releasing, I was pleased from beginning to end, and I was genuinely wishing for more at the end. I'll admit the Luke reveal in The Mandalorian was one the best moments in SW yet (although to be fair, part of the joy was cathartic, seeing how the Disney movies destroyed Luke, and how we needed a little respect paid to him) but as far as world building, overall acting and character development, this is unrivaled.

It's building towards something very big and it's relying on its characters to make it interesting which is a nice distinction from almost everything we've seen so far from Disney. I like how in the axe metaphor Andor can be seen both as a tree and an axe. He did kill a bunch of security people. For him it was just another day in the Rebellion but for Karn it was the worst day of his professional life.

Syril is a character I really hope joins the rebellion in the end. He may be an antagonist at the moment, but like you mentioned he has honestly not tried to do anything "wrong". Yes he broke a command to not pursue cassian, but the heroic part of me cheers for him in his attempt to seek justice. And will continue to root for up until he joins the rebellion or dooms himself for his obsession for justice.

I found Syril the most interesting character of the whole episode ngl and I'm hoping for him to either hunt Andor to the end of the world or somehow join the rebelion, I would love for him to join the rebellion!

@@ZoomerUnion You sure he's an Imperial loyalist? We've been shown a far more nuanced image of the character. It seems to me like Syril Karn is more a person, bereft of social skills, and friends or a satisfying home life and thus desperate for a sense of self worth and purpose. Which would explain why he threw himself into his work despite the advise of his superior. I think he would cling to any chance that would allow him to escape his pathetic circumstances. As it is, he seems to be cultivating the only purpose he has left: a grudge against Cassian Andor.

I'll say why I didn't mind this ep that I needed more from this group that Cassian is working with, why should we care, what to expect, who trusts who, are they feeling committed and brave, do they know what they are actually doing to care Andor risking his life to work with them... I didn't get enough of that from last ep. I am not saying it was the most compelling revelations but at least we know a bit more of where they stand, and that there is a lot of posturing and that they are not really as confident or as thought out on the topic as they first led you to believe.

Whatever happens to this show I really fuckin appreciate what they did with it. I can’t say how much I appreciate a Star Wars show FINALLY being legit-fucking well made, it’s like a “we made it boys” moment, we don’t have to rely on it being Star Wars to make it worthwhile.

Mon Mothma has become a substantially more interesting character, too. She sacrifices her own standing with her family for the Rebellion. Something I never considered about these Rebellion fighters - the impact their double or rebellious lives have on their families. This is a really enjoyable show and I'm all about it.

"We never knew that Mon Mothma had a teenage daughter" Given that she doesn't pop up in the future, I'm guessing that the daughter gets killed, probably by an imperial agent, which hardens Mon Mothma against the Empire.

Actually her daughter is mentioned in the Pre Disney books. It’s interesting they are using a version of her here.

I'm not sure they'll kill her, maybe her father being a Imperial fan, she would probably turn against her mother and fully join the Empire ? And if so, what happen after the war ? does Mon Mothma return on coruscant and is reunited with her daughter ? (Maybe not the husband) or did she really lost her family ? They just made her backstory so much more heavy in consequence. Crazy coming from a character who had like 1 minute of screen time saying: "Many Bothan died to bring us this information"

I'm loving the series. BUT...this thing should be in triplets. The first 3. Then the next 3. Then the next three and then the final 3. The 'series' should be 3 movies and presented that way. Going week to week is a hindrance. Arcane was presented this way and it worked amazingly with each of the 3 episodes telling a chapter in the larger story.

Loved it. It didn't feel slow for me at all. I was engrossed in it that when I looked it was already over. That's how I wanted to feel with obi wan and boba, but all I got was cringe and disappointment. I'm actually intrigued in which way corpo will flip... I know he's gotta pick a side.

Idk how to describe the way I feel in my head but I am just loving everything about this show. Sure, to some it seems slow. But without each of these episodes going into extreme details about these characters, we wouldn’t know why the rebellion is doing what they do. The obvious answer is that they just hate the empire. But like they said in this episode, everyone has there own specific reason. And that’s what these episodes are giving us. They show us the start of the rebellion and go into detail about those people. Going into this show, that’s what everyone knew it was going to be about. So idk why people want to complain about it. PLUS, it’s 12 episodes long and is gonna have 2 seasons. It’s a slow build so that when stuff actually happens, we have reason to care about the events or even the characters involved.

I loved every minute. One thing people aren't talking about, though ... "they're too random to be random" ... Meero and her assistant are trying to connect these seemingly random dots. But we know that this latest dot IS random. It wasn't the work of an organized fomenting rebellion. It was one random thief, working alone, with no greater agenda beyond stealing something of value to sell later on a rainy day. Luthen refers to Cassian as the "thief" - which is both accurate and telling about how he sees Cassian. Luthen's admiration of Cassian's skills are obviously defined by Cassian's daring theft.

Another fine episode. Action is not necessary in every episode. In any event, I expect plenty of that in the climactic episode to this arc. Episodes 4 & 5 have been a better build-up to the episode 6 than 1 & 2 were for 3. The tension being built up is quite palpable as almost anything could be a possible outcome from the attack. Meanwhile, the secondary plot with Mon Mothma is slowly starting it's own buildup to a climax I suspect we won't see until at least episode 9 or maybe even 12.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Cyril at the end of the show joining the rebellion or at least helping Cassian escape the empire in some way. The scene with his mom talking about how he hasn’t done anything meaningful in life, coupled with the fact that during his the first couple episodes as the security team leader he didn’t seem comfortable in that role. I think after working with the Empire as one of the antagonists we’ll see his arc include a realization the empire is not where his aspirations lie. As you said Thor he was only trying to get justice in the beginning anyway.

As a former young person I can relate. It's easier to believe everything can be fixed and to want to fix it. When you get old you become bogged down by the burden of making a living, you become tired and stop caring about ideals and saving the world (or worlds). The other fact is that as you get older, you learn that things aren't as easy to fix as you once thought. Such is the eternal conflict of youth and age.

Enjoyed both your review&Ep 5 TSW. Tbh your thoughts on almost everything SW square up w/my own. Well, more often than not. One thing&it's only a small detail, but the sound the TIE Fighter's make. They sound FAR more sinister or threatening somehow? Really makes the tension in Andor that much more palpable when they come into earshot&are fast on approach. Just an observation, thought&new appreciation I have for the sound of the TIE Fighters engine, seemingly enhanced now or tweaked from the original perhaps? Enhanced to exacerbate the viewers apprehension, it put my nerves on end. Or it's merely how a TIE Fighter would sound operating over the highlands? Seemed deliberate but it definitely worked for me. That tension you want to feel in a spy thriller was present despite Ep 5 being as slow as it was. All necessary to set the table, but...I've enjoyed the d'oeuvres thus far&glad there's so much more to come

Andor is paced very much like a British spy/thriller instead of an American fantasy action show...which I am personally a huge fan of. Obviously that has thrown many fans a curve ball. I dont think there is a problem in the story itself at all...if there is a problem, it lies in the preconceived expectations many fans brought to the show. I can see this being a pretty divisive show currently, however once the entire series is done and we can look back on the full picture...it will prove to be one of the strongest entries in the SW catalog....certainly of the Disney years.

And Luthen I think he has much invested in this I don't think I was for selfish reasons he was worried about that they could track the heist to him. He probably has more teams that is relying on him. I like the show. I do have two criticisms. One is the pace. I get what they're trying to do, but some scenes are over-written and overstay their welcome. Two is language. I want my Star Wars to feel other-worldly and exotic. I don't want Earth phrases left and right. "Hide the guns" should be "hide the blasters". "Airbase" should be "starport". "My ass on the line" should be ... well, something more sophisticated. I don't need the word "ass" in Star Wars. Etc. Also, the show needs more droids doing servant jobs. Mon Mothma has human servants and drivers. Why would you have that if you're afraid of Imperial spies? Use droids. It's Star Wars. Aside from this I like the show.

Finished watching it just now... yeah it's another setup, slow progression, but again, I really don't mind... the character development and slowburn to let things breathe is so needed... I think people have been so inundated with fast paced storytelling they think all storytelling that isn't fast is slow. I think personally this is how things oughta be... it's not slow because I am stupid to catch on... it's the right pace to invest and let things sink in, and see if things can change direction. I will say I don't think this ep was as good as last week's but it's still keeping a nice steady pace and nothing has bored me or frustrated me yet in the show.

Andor is very good so far. I enjoy the focus on characterization and the slow building of the storyline. Action is fine, but it needs to have a purpose other than just action. This is a much better written show then Kenobi was.
