What makes something well written? What story elements will make it well written? I think it's more like... stop making all the characters compete with each other when they're on the same team, make the use of the force and lightsabres more consistent, follow the pre-disney lore, no more power fantasy girl bosses, etc... something as nebulous and vague as just "better" really says nothing. It's kinda like calling tech support and saying "help, my computer won't turn on" there could be a hundred things wrong... so it's not a helpful thing to tell the tech guy... need to specify.

Which is sad, because death can be an incredibly powerful plot device in fiction: Obi-Wan in ANH, Anakin in RotJ, Qui-Gon in TPM, Shmi in AotC. Even the slaughter of younglings spoke volumes to just how far Anakin had fallen (and that scene gets even more emotional as I age). TLDR: good fiction has compelling, emotional, and permanent deaths.

Palpatine's plan in Attack of the Clones is the same as his plan in The Phantom Menace. Stoke the sentiment of political corruption and lack of faith in the Senate, encourage a Separatist movement, cause a political flashpoint, spark a war that the Jedi have to get stuck in. He's just fast-tracking it the second time, because rather than slow-roll it like he did the first time, he's made sure both sides have huge armies ready to go to get it started right away. The trail of breadcrumbs that Obi-Wan follows does, indeed, seem deliberate. And, Palpatine knows exactly who screwed up his plan the first time: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padme Amidala, Jar-Jar Binks, and Anakin Skywalker. So this time, he tricks them all into helping him.

Even his Rangers spin-off got shelved by her, and he's carried on and stayed on good terms, Iger sees this, he knows because Favreau has made bank for Disney in the past, with both his Lion king and Jungle book remakes. He's even been given a Starwars movie of his own to helm, and that itself has been pushed up, ahead of even the Rey movie which itself, that character and that particular era was intended to lead the entire "Disney Starwars" franchise. Good writing. That's all. I feel some people get confused when Andor is given so much praise, like they think we want more of that specific tone or genre, but it just so happens that Andor, with the style it tried, actually had good writing. It could've been anything really, but the quality is what made it shine. I wouldn't be surprised that, in the off chance Andor S2 becomes extremely successful, Disney will decide to start pooping new SW shows with the same tone, because they'll think that's what brought audiences, only for them to have the same mediocre writing as most things they make, so then they'll fail, and people will start asking themselves again "well, then what do people actually want from Star Wars?". I have my own preferences and wishes about what I would like to see from Star Wars, but that doesn't really matter if it's gonna suck, and I'll gladly enjoy something outside those preferences if it's good. One thing to consider though, one good show or movie is not gonna fix Star Wars. You need many of them. You need to slowly bring audiences back and rebuild trust. My personal opinion has always been that Palpatine lost the lightsabre part of both his fights in Revenge of the Sith but won the Force parts. He probably could have beaten Mace with Force Lightning or other Force-based attacks even after Mace disarmed him, but with Anakin's arrival imminent, that didn't suit his purposes, so it's less a case of throwing the fight (Mace genuinely was better with the blade, and so was Yoda) and more a case of "Blast! There goes the lightsabre, but Anakin's right outside so I can just look helpless now instead of switching to Force attacks". As for how much of what happened was Palpatine's plans, I'd say he was very much like Katherine in The Vampire Diaries - "Did you really think I didn't have a Plan B? Or if that didn't work, a Plan C? And, well you know how the alphabet goes"

I think the second question about Palpatine's plan in the George Lucas films shows one reason why the OT and Prequels still hold up. With Lucas's writing you can ask questions about the lore and fan-theory having fun exploring the lore. With the Disney Star Wars material you have to sludge through bad writing and baffling decisions before you can have fun with the lore. And the final reason is until Disney, when new material was created like Legends or KTOR it respected the lore that had been created and what Lucas wrote while still giving fans an expanded universe to plan in.

Preferably live action, but as long as it is good, i'd take animated as well. This could take inspiration from the EU while also coming up with some original stuff that fits the SW universe. I want to be kind of GOT style, as in the way they tell the story. No obvious main character and stories that are connected; characters that have never met can still impact each other etc. I also want good side content. Why do people want movies btw? When we can get ''movie content'' within shows. Like in TCW, some of those arcs were better than some of the movies imo. They should just make shows with movie arcs. Don't get me wrong, i like a good movie now and then i just don't see the point and we have to wait so long between each film. Movies should be for shorter side stories while the main storylines should be in show format. A good show is automatically better than a good movie imo. Especially given fans like us see the Sith as "cancerious" to the Force vs the Jedi being the "T-cells" of the Force. I would like (under the right director and writers) to see a "good Sith," but is still punished in the end for resorting to the "unnatural" side of the Force instead of trusting in will of the Force to balance. I can see the show building up his friends, relationships, and personal interest and showing us many "alternative paths" of him being humbled, patience, open-minded, and selfish that he doesn't take being "the real way" that he could've handled things. It would not only align well with what Lucas's has said about the Force BUT also teach its target audience (tweens) to be more open minded and allow for alternatives to present itself rather than rushing into things.

@HeyThor See here is something that I personally disagree with about the OT. Having other Jedi during the OT era is not an issue. Yoda is not all knowing... He didn't know every single Jedi that was active during the OT era. Remember he was on Dagobah for years and he only knew about Ezra and Kanan. How would Yoda know about Cal? It's not like he was on the Holonet. So why does Cal have to die? According to OT Fans so Luke can be the last Jedi? To take Yoda's the Last Jedi you will be line as Gospel is kind of ridiculous to me. From his perspective perhaps Luke was the last Jedi, but that doesn't mean there can't be any other Jedi in the galaxy. Yoda was a recluse and a hermit. How we he have known about people like Cal Kestis and Cere Junda? And sure u can say that he could sense them in the Force but what about those who cut themselves off from the Force. Honestly want to hear the other side of this debate

Hey Thor! Assuming the quality is good: Would you rather have a movie franchise or a big budget GOT style show? What's even the point of movies when you can tell a ''movie-story'' within a show? Some of TCW arcs were better or just as good as some of the main movies imo. I just don't get the strong want for movies when a good show is better. Imagine if Breaking Bad or GOT was movie trilogy; would still be good, but wouldn't you rather see the show? You already picked my comment a few videos ago so i don't expect you to pick me again xD

There is only so much you can do with a movie, due to the 2-3 hr time constraints. BB, GOT both would not be nearly as good if they were movies. I honestly much prefer the shows! Shows lend to better storytelling, more complex characters.

Hey thor, with speculation of Abeloth coming into canon after Ahsoka, what on your thoughts on Disney “reimagining” a lot of EU characters in their new canon? I think theyve been mostly unsuccessful, especially with larger characters such as Thrawn, but George also had this issue, taking EU characters like Quinlan Voss and writing them much worse. Should Disney move on from trying to rework Legends into canon, especially if theyre not interested in working with the EU authors for larger projects? It seems to me theyre more interested in the surface level iconography, names, and titles, rather than the good stories that were told.

As a whole, Star Wars needs directors and writers with strong visions and themes that are not meddled by progressive interests that care more about making "strong female characters" that inspire "little [insert race here] girls" that they can be on-par or better than men (i'm looking at you Sequel Trilogy). They also need to give projects time to develop naturaly rather than constantly meddling in their development for one reason or another, leading to messy productions like The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi which clearly suffered from rushed productions and creative restrictions.

Hey Thor do you think that Luthen Rael would be a great model of how they should do Magneto in the MCU by having him be some who knows how bad the things he is doing are but sees the goals that he is striving for as worth sacrificing his soul. This would give us a unique take on him for the films while keeping the base of who he is. Also how do you think they will solve the problem of him being a holocaust survivor and the fact he will be around 100 if the next film is set in the modern day and they use his typical backstory which would place it around 2030 at the earliest (the MCU is currently set in 2025 or 2026) and he would have to be born in the early to mid 1930's to have experienced the holocaust since if my memory of history class serves correct (it has been 6-8 years so I can be wrong) young children and the elderly were executed upon arrival even if i am mistaken if he would still have to be born in this range to be able to remember it well.

Hey Thor, while I know there was talk of nine Star Wars films back in the late 70s and early 80s, for years afterwards and especially after completing the prequels in 05, Lucas stated over and over that the series was done, RotJ was the end and there would be no 7, 8 and 9. It's only around when talk of the Disney acquisition started that we started to hear that George was writing outlines and he was talking to Mark, Carrie and Harrison. So my question, which might sound cynical I admit, is do you think it's plausible that George was doing all this to increase the value of his company knowing it was going to be acquired by Disney?

Don't get me wrong I think it could have more polish and there was a couple of things like the tracking fobs & the no taking the helmets off that made no sense. One they conviently forgot about and the other they retconned into a cult thing. But it was it's own new separate thing that was very Star Wars with all new characters. It was when they started bringing in the TCW & Rebels characters and linking it to the ST it went downhill very fast. Anything that builds to the ST is a creative dead end, most people don't like it, LucasFIlm can try and fix the ST all they want but it'll just turn off more fans.

i've been a Star Wars fan since 1983 -- that's when i saw RotJ in the theater, at 3 years of age. and i know *exactly* what i want from the franchise: 1) i want the EU on-screen, revitalized, and canonized. (this was the first mistake made by Disney and KK) 2) i want the nonsense, foolishness, preachiness, plot-holery, and narrative/character assassination of the so-called "sequels" erased from pop culture history. (this was the unforgivable sin) now, i understand just how titanic an undertaking part one would be, and i also know that it's a safe bet that no one has the stones and the grit to make a genuine attempt at it -- fair enough. but the second part is non-negotiable -- there is no part of the "sequel trilogy" or the tales that build up to it or off of it that can be salvaged, in my opinion, and all of that stems from one simple truth: if the iconic characters of the original trilogy had remained true to themselves as they were at the end of RotJ, then: 1) Luke Skywalker wouldn't have been an alien-sucking, child-deleting wimp-quitter 2) Leia Organa Solo would have been a chief of state of the New Republic instead of a rampaging incompetent running the same thirty-year-old anti-establishment movement out of the same sewer pipe in the seediest portion of the galaxy AND 3) there's no way in hell that Han Solo would EVER forget where the Falcon was. and that goes double for Chewie. They tore down the history that made the franchise worth the 4+ BILLION dollars they paid for it, and in so doing, made their shiny new toy unmarketable (at least to some of us). and here we come to what i think is the most viable trade-off for the matter of "What the Fans Want". if item #1 is unattainable, but #2 can be undone with the stroke of a pen (metaphorically), i would be willing to return to the franchise if they would simply stop wrecking the history of Star Wars -- but that's what the "sequels" did, EXACTLY: everything that had been done in the previous six episodes was for NOTHING, *and* they made wreckage of their main characters. Star Wars that: a) honors George Lucas' six films, b) validates at least some components of the EU, c) *INVALIDATES* the entirety of Disney Star Wars to date, and d) all rides on the expulsion of Kathleen Kennedy from Lucasfilm and any further opportunity for her to ruin more franchises/movies is exactly what i want. and those four components aren't "peak restoration" -- they're bare minimum prerequisites needed to open a dialogue which *might* result in some of my discretionary monies going toward new Star Wars products. i've got most of the EU all in my head, and that's enough for me, if this worst-case scenario continues.

Well said. Though I don't have much hope right now for this to happen, because you would need a major cultural shift in the entire entertainment sector. Do I think it could be possible, that someone buys Disney or Lucas Film, then fires all the writers and executives and hires sort of old school talent and maybe even get George Lucas involved? I'm not sure there are enough normal people left in Hollywood that you could hire, that would bring you the quality of the original movies or the Extended Universe. But one can dream.
@syrusterrigan936610 ай бұрын
@@Lt_Rik you're right. There is little reason to hold out hope. But, desperate times, desperate measures. Disney is grinding itself to financial chaff so rapidly that if they *don't* course-correct (and HARD!) soon, that every IP they possess will be up for grabs. And Nelson Peltz is building a coalition . . . . I simply look at it this way: one of three things will happen -- 1) Disney somehow unf__ks itself and starts doing right by its IPs; 2) someone gets the current regime out of the way (either by hostile takeover or the bankruptcy auctions) and pays attention to what we've said for the last 8+ years; or 3) the madness continues, and all that's left is my own headcanon. Either way, I believe I'll get what I want, and as my frugal tendencies increase with age, I know which one of the three is cheapest and will provide the most satisfaction . . . . I'm going to win this, no matter what. The only question is: would Disney like to stop failing??

Hey Thor I find it very confusing as to why Disney is so hell set on re-hashing time periods we have seen or know to death. I mean they literally came up with two of their very own time periods within the story, that being the High Republic and The New Jedi Order. I personally think they are trying to squeeze too much into already established storylines, whereas they could very easily without aggravating the fans, just write all new stories with basically all new fresh characters they have designed themselves. For me I have been really enjoying The High Republic books and think they deserve a more prominent spot on the screen. I know we are getting the acolyte and the Rey movie but it's taken this long to get these. Do you think that this is because they was scared the fans wouldn't connect to the stories and characters if they didn't include cameos of this or that character from the main stories? What do you think the reason is that we can't just get a solid Star Wars show or movie about something new and fresh? I would love to know your thoughts...

The prequels were infamously derided by fans/critics and yet have permeated pop culture with their plethora of Jedi/Sith and ninja lightsaber duels. It sends a confusing message to modern Lucasfilm as they try to make as much content about supposed fan-favorite characters while the actors are still alive. Meanwhile the one show with excellent writing & full of original (or previously minor) muggle characters gets somewhat low viewership, and suits will be like "...welp". It's a tough situation

@Captain_Insano_nomercy I disagree that it removes the agency from Anakins decision. In fact, I think it does the opposite by having Palpitine force a decision out of Anakin. Giving Anakin the choice to either save him or Mace Windu. This does not remove Anakin's choice (agency), for Palpatine had already lost the fight and Anakin's choice is still extremely important. Also, Palpatine needed be deformed in a fight with Jedi to sway the Senate to make him Emperor and support his decision to wipe out the Jedi. This would make even more sense if he chose throw the fight. The only person whose agency is removed is Mace Windu, who, in this theory, didn't win at all. It may not be what George Lucas intended, but I think it would make sense.
@GGBlaster10 ай бұрын
@@flyingtigermanI don’t know, while the narrative of Palpatine throwing the fight certainly speaks to his superior intellect and cunning, it kinda stretches things to the point of being hard to believe. Perhaps Palpatine could have planned the whole fight. Perhaps he knew exactly what Anakin would do. Perhaps he knew the exact moment that Anakin would enter the room so he could time everything just right to let Anakin see a menacing Mace Windu holding a helpless old man at the end of a lightsaber. Maybe he had every intention of letting his own force lightning reflect off of Windu’s lightsaber and back at him to cause himself such harm and deformity. Maybe he knew that Anakin would cut Mace Windu’s hand the very instant before Windu could land a killing blow. But really? Not a shred of concern for his own life? Even with his clearly stunned face upon seeing Windu lose his hand? Killing the first of the four Jedi who came to arrest him was evening the odds. The second was because he could finally walk out of the shadows and kill his hated enemies. The third was because he realized Mace Windu was more competent than he had anticipated. Consider: how convincing is it to lose a 4 on 1 fight after killing the first three? Palpatine had taken a moment before killing Kit Fisto, most likely because he actually planned on losing 2 on 1, adding to the appearance of helplessness once Anakin walked in. Sure, it may just be my speculation, but I don’t buy Palpatine having every variable under control.

The only reason to alter SW’s core principles and practices is to celebrate the petty vanities of the current SW production team. I like what that first comment brought up about the "just make good Star Wars." I see that phrase all the time but I have to ask, what does that mean!? And I notice that a lot of the people who say that aren't really interested in explain what "good Star Wars" is. Look at the Prequels: we have people saying their misunderstood masterpieces which enhanced the franchise as a whole while others say they're terrible stories and proof Lucas giving up control of Star Wars was a good thing. What about Tales of a jedi: Some have said they are great stories that add more depth to the stories of Ahsoka and Dooku; especially the latter. But I've noticed a vocal minority of people saying they're overpraised and didn't need to be made. I'm not going to get into the whole "is this Star Wars content necessary" rabbit hole. Or what about Rebels: Some have praised it for its themes, characters and the greater context it adds to events in the Star Wars saga while others call it "watered down Clone Wars" with worse animation, inconsistent tones and say its characters are ok at best. Even stuff like Andor isn't immune to this; the vast majority of the fanbase (supposedly a vast majority anyway) call it the best Star Wars content since the original trilogy while others say it's not real Star Wars. And some straight up won't even watch it for that reason or another. This might just be a me thing but it honestly gets exhausting hearing people say "just make good Star Wars" when it's incredibly vague on what they consider "good."
