CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Jerry (Casey Siemaszko) convinces a football player (Mike Jolly) to confront Buddy (Richard Tyson) in the library, but Buddy knocks him out.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The first feature film from director Phil Joanou (State of Grace), Three O' Clock High chronicles a high school nerd's much hyped after-school bout with the infamous class bully. When the impish Jerry Mitchell (Casey Siemaszko) is assigned to interview the new transfer student with a supposedly violent past, Buddy Revell (Richard Tyson), he makes the fatal mistake of touching his subject. Revell, who hates being touched, responds by challenging the unwilling Mitchell to a fight at three o'clock in the parking lot. Spanning the course of the school day, the film follows the disaster-bound Mitchell as he soils his good-boy image through various misguided attempts at averting the fight. Also making noteworthy appearances in the film are Jeffrey Tambor and Philip Baker Hall.

I went to high school with one of the writers, Tom Szollosi. Buddy Revel was based on one of my fellow classmates, BARRY Revel. Barry was a jock that was always getting into fights. I get a big chuckle out of this movie because Tom used some of our teachers names and student names as well as Barry.

What I've always heard is, that it's the people who never share anything about themselves who are the ones to most watch out for. Not so much the meek, because some meek guys talk about themselves alot, complain about their problems, etc. But it's the ones who you've seen numerous times but still know absolutely nothing about, who won't tell you the slightest tiniest details about themselves, who are the possible dangerous people. Buddy fits the bill.

The cinematography in this film is so underrated . . . simply brilliant! On top of that, it is a funny, well written, engaging movie that goes far beyond the typical teenage romp . . . This has been one of my favorites from the first time I saw it as a senior in high school in 1987 . . . This is also one of those movies that gives you a true picture of how teens were dressing in the 80s . . . this always seems to work better when it is organic. There are too many scenes that transcend what I would normally consider classic . . . just watch the damned movie and enjoy!

Transcend is the right word here. They took the cliche of library stacks going down like dominoes only to add the highly unlikely event of the statue spinning and falling into the next row of shelves to continue the destruction. That along with alot of the photography like you said, shows the filmmakers had a wry sense of humor and playfullness not scene in these kinds of films.

On top of the many reasons to love this scene, the realism in which it treated the assault itself must be mentioned. From the wince-inducing bone snap, to the punch that looks, feels and sounds real, they even got the blood on Craig's face to look right. Most films get the consistency of fake stage blood wrong, this looks and flows like real blood. He literally looks like he's drowning in it lol.

I remember hearing the filmmakers were very nervous about filming this scene. They figured they would have to get this shot just right on the first take, and they weren't sure the actor playing Craig Mattey would hit the first shelf with enough momentum to pull off the domino effect. I know these guys were older than their characters were supposed to be but what is it about high school football players that makes them look like they are already in their late 20's? Alot of the players in my school looked like that too. Must be all the protein shakes & 'Roids. Haha.
