Very nice comparison here. However I truly wonder where this is pointing out Timecode use as being better vs the HID interpretation (platter movements) is indicating that the HID implementation is less mature/needing improvement. Timecode processing also requires a sort of "snapshot" by the software to potentialy do an analog to digital conversion and then calculate speed, direction, etc , which requires time as well, and that is probably the same thing as a "tick" in the MIDI/HID world (and which is also a reason why DVS still can have drift). For 3600 ticks (10% of 1 degree to miss movement), even in slow, short movements it's arguable if the dead spots are really going to be exercised/heard in practice, given the HID processing is good and the resolution could even be increased further for potentially better response.

It’s a common sentiment among turntablist and scratch djs. Personally, I don’t really feel a difference, but I’m not scratching at the highest level or anything. It could just be placebo too…

@@djsoo tbh I think it's mostly in the head (wrt the platter manipulation). Other functionality (cue behavior, pitch behaviour, instance doubles, etc) definitely is different though. No judgement though, maybe there is a difference that can be felt and I'm just not good enough to exercise such, but in terms of the technology, (large enough resolution and a good implementation), in theory it seems unlikely.

I'm looking to get my first turntable and I keep going back and forth between the Rane 12 and the reloop rp7000 mk2. I'm nervous about dealing with cartridges but used rane 12 mk2s are almost $700. What would you recommend for someone's first turntable?

Rane twelves are not turntables - they are a controller only for software - so if you wanted to play any vinyl then get the 7000s. If you only ever want to play serato, I personally love the twelves
