Here's the problem with the cops thing, and I think I made this argument recently in the comments of another video. The phrase that many people only know the first half of with regards to police brutality, "A few bad apples..." has its second half, "...spoil the bunch" for a reason. The problem is that the bad cops (as many or as few in number as there are depending on your standards for what counts as a "bad cop") make ALL cops look bad and that erodes the trust that the public has for the police as a whole. Because just like those cops don't know if a protester they encounter is going to be harmless or a threat, the average citizen doesn't know if a cop they encounter is one of the good ones who does their job well, or a corrupt asshole who's gonna shoot their pet puppy in the head (cops have done that on several occasions, by the way) and plant drugs on them just so they can beat the shit out of them and throw them in prison for several years of their life. So if anything, the GOOD cops should hate the corrupt, authority-abusing asshole cops every bit as much as the people who generalize and hate all cops. And the good cops should want nothing more in this world than to be able to hold the bad ones accountable and bring them to justice. Also, as a side note, a bad dentist or a bad mechanic is not nearly as likely to cause someone's death as a bad cop. A bad cop can kill an innocent person in a split second and anyone who blindly worships the institution of law enforcement just shrugs it off and says "BUT NOT ALL COPS!!!" and even their superiors rarely give them so much as a slap on the wrist as penalty. Oh, and did I mention the fact that the police disproportionately target racial minorities? I didn't because I honestly hate to bring race into things if it's not necessary, but I feel that it's a fair point to make. The point is, the problems with police in this country are SYSTEMIC, and the existence of good, honest cops, doesn't fix those problems. I'd like to close my rambling musings with a quote from a movie I watch at least once a year, every St. Patrick's Day. The movie is called The Boondock Saints and the quote goes as follows. "We must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most. And that is the indifference of good men."

Especially because we've been led to believe that the bad guys are the minority, and the good guys will keep the bad guys in check. There are bad apples everywhere. There are bad doctors, bad cops, bad firefighters, bad lawyers, bad shoe salespeople, bad accountants, bad bankers, bad politicians, etc. Doesn't mean all of them are but the few bad apples taint their profession. That is why it is absolutely imperative that the good people call out bad people in their ranks and disassociate them from the good members of their profession. In my town last winter, a black homeless man was robbed the night before. The little belongings that he actually had. Town police took him to breakfast lunch and dinner the next day. They bought him a warm Carhartt jacket, gloves and a hat. He lived in a tent, they also bought him a sleeping bag good for 0 degrees. And a very nice pillow to go with it. Every one knew this guy and he called those police officers his brothers. They truly cared about this man. You won't hear these stories. I love you Vic. You're like the dad I never had. In regards to cops I would like to make the point that a lot of the problem (in my humble opinion) isn't the individuals but the overall police system and the way it seems to attract people with anger issues and other unfavorable traits for a civil servant. I too know many cops who are amazing people but even they have little control over how the system as a whole operates. The training for cops is very much focused on the idea that everyone you approach is a criminal, that everyone is waiting to shoot or harm you the second you don't pay attention or let your guard down. Yes, there are bad people who will do this but just like your point says, they are not the majority. It's not the people on the streets who are the problem, it's the ones designing and implementing the overall system that are setting things up to be this way. It's no different than international war, real heroes fighting an imagined/inflated enemy created by rich people in power.

@uncleben4872

@@who346 I'm not in any way saying they have it easy, the world is fucked up. I myself have never served but I have a few family members and close friends who have so in that way my knowledge of those roles is mostly anecdotal. I do however suffer from pretty severe PTSD. I guess that's kinda normal when one of your parents tries to kill you a couple times. Anyways, the point I'm trying to make is that while the person who caused me my trauma is a bad person who did bad things; i realize that It's not totally his fault. Not to absolve him of what he did but some shit happened to him in his past that made him the way he is. It's a cycle that gets repeated over and over again, a system, that needs fixing. Again, I don't put the blame so much on the individual officers and soldiers as I do on the methods employed by the overall system and the small percentage of those who are in charge of those systems.

ok let's get this straight now according to the bereau of labor and statistics police officer isn't even in the top ten of most dangerous jobs . these are the 10 most dangerous jobs in america . 10 . landscaping, lawn service , grounds keepers 9 .construction and extraction workers 8.structural iron workers 7.farmers , ranchers , other agriculture workers 6.Driver/sales workers and truck drivers 5.refuse and recyclable materials collectors 4.roofers 3.aircraft pilots and flight engineers 2.fishers and related fishing workers 1.logging workers what really ticks me off is listening to people talk about how dangrrous a cops job is . typically it isn't , statistically it isn't . when a cop gets killed on the job it makes hesdline news and is the lead story on every news outlet . but when a roofer falls to his death or a powerline worker gets electrocuted you never hear about it . so get me a bloody river if the job is so damn dangerous that you are crippled with fear kissing your wife and kids good bye when you walk out the door to go to work because you're afraid you won't make it home at the end of your shift then you are oblivious to the fact that everyone who walks out the door to go to work in the morning might not make it home after their shift and many of us are going out to do far more dangerius jobs than a cop even the guy delivering your pizza has a more dangerous job than the cops do . and yes they do get a bad rap but they earn it as a whole . they do far less protecting and serving than they do harrassing and menacing. if they want to have a better reputation then they should work on building it instead of walking around acting superior and trying to intimidate and stop policing for profit . that's what really ticks me off.

I do believe most officers of the law want to do the best job they can. However, when they make a bad move - as Vic relates the bad dentist, or the bad mechanic. well, something bad by a cop is not quite remedied as easily as the dentist or mechanic. When a cop makes up lies and stories and has you arrested and jailed, it's a different story. Some cops think they are law, judge, jury and executioner. And guess what? His story bears more weight than mine; my complaint against him is of no relevance. Because he's a cop. And I experienced this firsthand.

The motto they use of “I am following orders” is not an excuse to act in a bullying and authoritarian manner. Do they have stress yes, but soldiers in my opinion deserve a hell of a lot more respect. They defend the nation and are compensated a lot less. In addition to that the cases of abuse of power are a lot less. After seeing all the cases of “law enforcement” acting in a Gestapo like matter can you blame us for our resistance? Why don’t they use their brains and common sense before they start acting like the German SS or (insert secret police name) stomp on our civil rights! If a dentist/ mechanic assaults me I have right to defend myself and kick the bastard in his balls. If a cop assaults me and I defend myself I will wind up dead or in jail for assaulting an officer. 3.) Dentists and mechanics are not given a badge, a gun, a car, and permission to cruise the neighborhoods. Between my experiences and the experiences of others, there's practically no accountability in police forces around our nation. I’ve got a 17yr old son and all he thinks about is himself. Now he’s no different to any other 17yr old. If COVID19 wasn’t here it would be the same. But these total (no word can describe) ADULTS that think of themselves totally disgusts me. We are all humans and we are ALL fighting the same WAR. We are ALL soldiers fighting the same war. We can’t fight this war if 20% of the people think it doesn’t exist. I am truly disgusted to be a human atm.

If good cops turned in bad cops ... you wouldn't need Internal Affairs. No one is above the law especially if you're the guy carrying the badge and gun. Most cops are simply doing their job and trying to stay alive at the same time. They are not judge or jury and their job is to STOP/ ARREST those breaking the law but if you don't comply and obey commands, it can and will get ugly.

Vic, I enjoy watching your videos, some I laugh at and some I agree with you. I even share your videos on my social media site for others to watch. The title of this video is “Making Generalizations” and you have some very good points talking about there is good and bad in every group. Your story is heartfelt talking about your family who serve as Police Officers (my heart goes out to them for their selfless service). But then you change your tone talking about “heavily-armed screaming nuts”, “mental patients” and “idiot protesters” with their AK-47s. Are you part of the problem that you begin to explain at 5:10 of the video? Are you “making generalizations” of those that were protesting? I spent 23 years of my adult life serving in the United States Army honorably, selfless serving, and protecting our freedoms. Isnt that what these individuals were doing? Freedom to Protest, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Assembly, Right of the People to keep and Bear Arms? Not to mention this is our tax paying dollars that built that house, office, building. Our tax paying dollars pay the politicians salary why shouldn’t they have to listen to us? Thank you again for what you do, look forward to seeing your next video.

Hey Vic, I tend to agree with many of the comments. I have family that are police also so I have seen first hand how that "blue brotherhood" works. In my opinion, because Police Officers are responsible for maintaining the peace, solving crimes, and apprehending criminals when necessary. Unfortunately with little accountability for their actions from peers, the police unions, and the justice system it generates a lot of mistrust for police. As many have already said, if the bad ones were called out by their peers and held accountable for their actions by our justice system this issue would likely NOT be an issue. Police are "supposedly" trained to do their jobs properly: deescalate a situation, know the law, and to properly interact with the public. Our LEO's should be held to a higher standard because they are the ones entrusted to UPHOLD our laws, NOT a lower standard than an average citizen. They are supposed to be the professionals. Distressingly we see more and more abuse of power, and more killings of unarmed and/or innocent civilians. That can't be allowed to be swept under the rug because...he's blue. That is bullshit. I agree with the generalization issue, that is not right. But when it comes to police and your interactions with them, HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH ARE THE GOOD ONES? Because in this day and age, you can't just assume an Officer is a good one, because if you guess wrong you could be dead.

Police culture in America is toxic. Cops won't turn in bad cops. Accountability is nearly zero for a wrongdoing officer. It is deeper than just the police officers, it's the entire US "justice" system. It's apparent that bad faith policing is a common occurrence all over the country, yet the officers are rarely held accountable for their wrongdoings, and I'm not talking about accidental mistakes, I'm talking about intentional wrongdoings. The people will not respect the police or the justice system until they respect us.

@michaelknight4920
@michaelknight4920 4 жыл бұрын
First off, your videos are hilarious and I really enjoy your talent of being a comedian.....However, I take issue with some of the content in this one. The whole mindset of "police are amazing individuals who put their lives on the line every day so we should put them up on a pedestal" First off, contrary to popular belief, including yours, being a police officer is not even in the top 15 most dangerous jobs.....Second, its not like the were chosen in a draft lottery like the Vietnam war. Law enforcement is a job (just like other dangerous jobs) that the individual volunteered to do. You are correct that with the current pandemic, they are in much more danger than they typically are. They do have a choice - It is a job that they can quit and find another one. I am not saying that is an easy decision but it is an option. Here is another thing - you are right, people make mistakes. However, if somebody in law enforcement makes a mistake (a major mistake, like killing somebody), they may not have the same consequences as a private citizen who doesn't have a shield and the backing of their colleagues. How many videos can you watch of police shooting unarmed people of color and then have them outright lie about what happened to protect themselves. Also, something you didn't mention - you are a white male and are used to the police being on your side. People of color - especially those in poor neighborhoods simply don't have that luxury. And your friends and relatives that you refer to as "beautiful people who live their lives with honor and integrity". You feel that way because they are your friends and relatives. I doubt that they would volunteer any shady stuff that they have contributed to while in an official capacity during their time on the job. Like you said, nobody is perfect. There is just too much evidence just through videos that shows this may not be the truth. It is pretty obvious that police work attracts bullies and for good reason. They have a lot of power considering the time and training it takes to become a cop. Maybe there are more good ones than bad ones but you cannot argue that somebody with an attitude problem (that society is supposed to take orders from) with a nightstick and gun can abuse that power. I would like to believe that most don't. Also, like a lot of state jobs, plenty of people become police officers because they can retire with a full pension after 20 years. And if they get hurt on the job (which many people do, not just cops), they can get 3/4 pay for the rest of their lives. And before you react in the knee jerk way that I expect you will - i.e. "You don't like cops, don't call them, let's see how that works out" try to think it through. Now, you may think from this comment that I am one of the police haters but I am definitely not. The police are absolutely a necessary component of a civilized society and the world would be WAY worse than it is if they were not around. However, they are human beings doing a human job and I just don't accept the generalization (which coincidentally is the point of your video) that most cops are outstanding professionals who do an amazing job day in and day out. We are already in a world of pain - with or without people who make generalizations

Good cops that turn a blind eye to the actions of bad cops should be charged as accessory to the crime. EQUAL JUSTICE, cause we the citizens get that, so they should get held to the same standards, at the very least! That's why they ALL get the shit end of the stick cause it don't happen!
