I just saw an article about a bill that is out there that is looking to limit the term to 15 years for Supreme Court Judges.

There was a bill at one point to have 18 year term limits. Every two years a new judge would be appointed, so every presidential 4 year term would get two picks. I like that idea. But that bill didn't go anywhere unfortunately.

debradenslow yup... unfortunately, the bill you are talking about is nothing more than smoke and mirrors. SCOTUS terms are set in the constitution, so passing a bill would just allow SCOTUS to find it unconstitutional. To limit SCOTUS terms would require an amendment to the constitution. The politicians proposing, and signing on to the bill already know that. They are just trying to manipulate people who haven’t actually read the constitution into believing they are actually doing something they aren’t, as a way to garner votes.

BTW, there is NOT a "lifetime" appointment to the Supreme Court in the Constitution. That is more of a tradition than anything else. The Constitution merely states that they shall "serve during good behavior" -- and any federal judge CAN be impeached by Congress just like the President.

I've been saying this exact same thing for the past few years. 1) they need term limits at every level of government, 2) when they file for taxes, it should be made public so the people can see just how much they truly make, 3) they should be held accountable to the people to keep their promises instead of just working for themselves and 4) they all need to be fired - too much bi partisanship and not enough helping the people.

Vic, I agree with your stances, but pragmatically speaking, even if a lot of us refuse to vote for people who won't support term limits, etc enough other people will. I hate to say it, but I think money in politics is too ingrained to go back now. I do wonder, though, why the term limits on SCOTUS Justices is just now being talked about. It's like people can't realize how bad something is until they hear other people start talking about it. Like with the Democrats: they had the White House and Congress during part of Obama's administration and didn't do any of the things they now say are so vital and time sensitive. They did, however, against the warnings of Republicans, get rid of the filibuster and now Trump is about to have his 3rd Supreme Court appointment without them having a way to block it. I have a bumper sticker that says, "God bless America, but fuck the assholes who run it." That about sums it up. Peace and love, everyone!

The supreme court should have continuity. The justices should only be ensuring equal justice under the law as it is written. Not making policy decisions, not legislating laws. As for senate term limits, yes, we should have those, but we also do not want a bunch of freshmen running around not knowing wtf is going on in the world. A lot of these people in office, who have the highest security clearances, are needed. So, term limits, but also in a way we have experienced people in there as well. Figure that one out!
