She lives at the end. Don't understand how these kids can be smiling at the end, but say how sad it is... Dust must get into eyes from the first chorus on...😢 There's a few reaction videos of this song that pretend to be emotional about this song, but are smiling all thru it. Sad really

Well, I'm surprised she got through it without crying because I sure didn't! By the way, well, written song. Some of those Nashville writers have songwriting down to a craft, hooks, clever twists in meanings, the payoff in the last part of the story. People don't realize, it takes a lot of practice for those staff writers on Music Row to craft songs like these 'on demand' day after day! Rock groups just write songs when they are inspired, on a whim or when they feel like it. And many times, there's no real story, just putting some lyrics to some cool melody or song with a great guitar riff that they came up with. I can tell you, staff writers in Nashville have their songwriting craft scrutinized under very strict criteria and are subject to really high expectations from their employers to write hit songs or at least something that merits an album cut! A song like "Don't Take The Girl" is what those in the music biz call, a "Top shelf song"! It will stand out on the first listen and keeps your attention all the way through. I can 'promise' you, when the demo was heard for this tune, they knew it was a hit!

I have to agree with others regarding the story. If you were just to hear the song you might conclude that she died, except for one thing. Each verse ends in a positive way for the girl, she got to go fishing, she was not taken or hurt by the stranger and so this leads me to believe she lived. Once you see the video, it is even more reinforced because at the end you see Johnny and his father fishing and then you see the mother running to them with the picnic basket. Again giving the impression that the the writer (or at least the creator of the video) intended for us to believe the mother lived.

I was born in the late 60's, I listened to 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, & 90's, and then I quit. The music just doesn't grab you, move you, make you think, and touch reality the way it used to, and I'll say this much, it's because the entertainers now (yeah right) are out of touch with reality.

"Country is not country anymore" same thing they said about Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, etc. etc. That wasn't country either, you got to go clear back to the 50's if you want any "real country". If you're gonna tell me that Chris Stapleton isn't country, I'll call you crazy. So either such up and enjoy the show or stay stuck in your delusions. Said with love!

Tbh back then I was calling contemporary country.....rural pop. With a few exceptions. I didn't consider it "real country" back then. Going off the video she survived. As she was running up on them with the picnic basket. The song itself never gives the results of any time he asked "don't take the girl.". So it really ends however you want it to.

Hey there, Who’s Right, Who’s Wrong, I discovered your channel this week. 👍 You think this is a sad song? Give a listen to “What Hurts the Most” by Rascal Flatts. “Jesus Takes the Wheel” by Carrie Underwood, Little Moments by the “ hilarious” Brad Paisley. The video is sweet and funny about relationships, and “Belive” by Brooks and Dunn. ( you’ll need tissues, a lot of tissues). These are a few favs of mine. When Country music COOL.
