A great tribute too to the Danish architect, Utzon, who had such a struggle to get his design accepted (“leave the weird ideas to the Danish). We owe him a great debt. Tim is the master of irony.

Such a fantastic tribute to such an iconic building. Great request Kappy and wishing you a belated Happy Birthday 🎈🎂. Tim does such a brilliant job in this tribute. The Musical theatre style, the oozing irony and ofc a great cameo by Barnsey!

The original idea came from an orange the sails on the opera house if pieced together form a perfect sphere! Such a brilliant iconic design and received so muck backlash and hatred at its inceptionThis song is the perfect tribute to them for standing tall and following their dream. ❤😂

This is humorous, ironic and sarcastic all at once. Sums up Australian humour I think. Absolutely jam packed with world leaders, Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth, the Pope, not to mention celebrities, artists, politicians and so many Aussie references, that to explain it fully you would have to sit for ages and freeze frame it. Happy birthday Kapp and happy birthday to a world treasure, the SOH.

What a treasure trove of archival footage they dug up for this. Tim’s move into theatre really shows here with all this great choreography and editing to make his counterpoints to his sarcastic lyrics. I got goosebumps watching this.

Ahhh, the irony of one of the world's biggest smartarse, show-off clowns singing that no one likes those things 😅🥰. We most certainly do! Usually you can't truly appreciate Tim's genius unless you watch each thing at least 10 times because there are always multiple messages woven through his work. The more you watch his work, the more it grows on you. He is concurrently singing about the design of the Opera House being outside the box and monumental as well as the performers who perform there. I think one of the most clever lines is "you've got to build your walls around you, build them straight and make them square...that way you'll blend in with the background, that way no one will point and stare" - The Opera House walls of course not being straight and square, and it definitely not blending in with the background, but standing out. At the same time he is delivering many important messages to anyone else watching - be yourself, push the boundaries, don't judge others, assess your own ways of thinking, try to see things from different perspectives, avoid doctrines and tribalism... all while saying the exact opposite and letting the imagery convey the true meaning.

I’m guessing you’ve watched Tim’s vid of the making of play it safe on KZbin, a few changes he had to make lol, called - ‘Play it safe - behind the scenes.’ Tim and the cast talking about it 😊 (After all this time, I just tripped over it 👍)

It’s been a year since you commented this, and I hope you’ve seen some more of Tim’s work in the meantime! It’s really worth seeking out his comedy, his non-comedic songs, his musicals, his television shows and appearances, and his brilliant performance as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar!

The first time I saw it, I thought "Keep it safe?????" Because the Opera House is anything but. Then I realised....Tim Minchin....and the tongue in cheek irony became abundantly clear. Have loved this place over the 40+ years I've lived in Sydney. And the anniversary reminds me I've lived in this country for 50 years. Still haven't quite eradicated my original accent😅. Thanks to Dr Kapp for this one.
