If you do a Deep Dive on Climate Change, research Dendro and Ice Core-based Paleoclimatic Reconstructions. Also research the causality for the LIA, MCA, Late Antique IA/Late Roman Cold Period, the LBA Collapse, Collapse of the Egyptian Old Kingdom, and Ur 3rd Dynasty. Also, research Bond Event triggers and theory associated with Long term Postglacial cyclical climatic oscillation. Also look at the links between long-term cyclical climatic oscillation and volcanism/extensive tectonic plate destabilization. This will provide a good data set to compare with theory associated with Climatic predictive modeling.

If Elon REALY wanted to impress me then he'd challenge social media and develop a truly open platform... space isn't really for humans. Even if I see a colon on Mars in my life time, it'll be nothing much more than the equivalent of a camp site in a desert (yes I understand the difficulties in doing that). Space is for drones and technology... that's the only way we are going to explore and experience space.

This is honestly God’s work. I’m 26, I don’t really come across people who listen to these podcasts (JRE, JBP etc.) the way I do but I strongly feel that they are around. There’s gonna be some time in the future when my generation takes over and there’s gonna be a powerful section of that generation that grew up and cemented their identities on the content that you guys put out. You are already having a huge impact right now but a few years from now I think you’d have changed the world beyond your wildest dreams. We know you don’t always get everything right but we admire the courageous way you guys chase your dreams, careful not to lose yourself but actually grow in the process. Thank you for being you :)

Great conversation, however I find that Tim is so naively excited about the future without ever considering how the folks who will first benefit the most from AI is the rich. And this point is rarely addressed by lex, Elon and now Tim. Neural link, space travel, ai technology is exciting but seems the rich and elite will use it to only better themselves and their families while the rest of us breath shity air and fight each other over petty differences.

@@Maxatrillion08 It's true that rich people will be the first to get the new toys, so to speak, but genuine AI will be much more than that, and has the potential to take us beyond the idea that toys are even of any importance, this is my hope.

@@xmathmanx can you elaborate on what you mean by 'beyond the the ideas that toys are any importance'? Furthermore I think calling technology 'toys' is reductionistic. These technologies are tools. I'm not sure those in our lifetime will truly be able to benefit from the utopian vision these technologies propose. Capitalism and the tools inherent in that system are already very oppressive, what makes you think these new 'toys' won't be just as oppressive?

The part about the witch casting a spell where all material things made by mankind disappear is basically the story of the anime dr. Stone. In dr stone every person on the plant suddenly turns to stone. A few million years later a few people wake up and the exact scenario happens as Tim Urban described. Some trying to rebuild the civilization to once again have all the technology we have today. And the others trying to fight off technology in fear of going down the same path as we have now and destroying the earth once more

Thanks for the tips on how to beat procrastinating. I struggle greatly with it and related 100% to the discussion. The part about doing what the monkey wants to do first is so true. Me best days are when I have something planned that involves others and I have to be there for them. Procrastinating may be the worst form of self-deprecation.

the answer to 'how long would it take to make an iPhone?' is: we will never be able to re-make one again.
@alexcharlton9010
@alexcharlton9010 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's entirely true. I feel by the time we do make it again, we'd have re-built everything in our current society that the witch took away.
@jimx6447

@@alexcharlton9010 well the only way to re-make an iPhone is to re-build everything in current society but we wont be able to. we will be at step 100 but without having all the privileges that step 100 gave us, also without knowing how we got to step 100. humans started from step 1. the thought of going back to 1 would easily drive everyone crazy and most likely we end up extinct.

17:15 @Tim an interesting spin on this question, how long will it take to completely manufacture the iPhone 13 on Mars with current human civilisation? A serious question. I would say 20-30 years?

We would need a chip making machine, and those had problems with water shortage in Taiwan, imagine on Mars, but it could be made, then all the tech to make the chip making machine

I love to read, I just won't take the time to sit and read. I was a bit apprehensive about audiobooks. If you give me directions, I'm lost after 2 steps, unless I write it down (I'm more a visual learner). However, it's been a good compromise. I listen to them while I'm working in my shop and I'm even lucky enough to be able to use earbuds at work. If it's good enough, I'll just listen to it again.

The worst thing about this video is that the procrastination section is the longest. Lex should have cut it down to chunks so that we lazy people could bring ourselves to watch it.

Having given it a lot of thought, our political problem is all related to inequality. We are broadsided with prosperity messages, record profits, massive gains. Both the left and the right are feeling left behind. Everyone is angry at authority figures, often the opposition’s leaders, for being part of the the problem. “Make America Great Again” is one version of messaging that connects with people feeling left behind by prosperity. They feel it. But the left has it’s version as well. It is a thing that repeats itself constantly in history and often or even always leaves to some type of rebellion. But what is different now is that our elite are not in government. They are in the shadows, not fully realized by the general public. So we attack politicians, because clearly they are the reason why. The anger is spilling into many categories that are not the main issue, just version of outrage.
