The gluttony is just another mechanism of passive enslavement our directors put upon the masses. My best friend's mom is a Costco exclusive shopper and gets visibly angry if groceries are bought elsewhere. The 45 minute drive to Costco is worth the 32 cents she may save instead of going to the local market 5 minutes down the road.

One time I stayed with my aunt in Utah. She had three giant freezers full of food from Costco. She only lived with herself and her husband. When I asked her why she still goes to Costco and fills up these fridges all the time she just shrugged and said she didn’t know. Neither of them were overweight. I think there’s something about Costco that appeals to the American fantasy.

My grandma is the same way. It some deeply seated need that I believe originates in childhood. My grandmother was very poor growing up. They barely had anything so now that she has the ability to buy things, she just goes all out. I remember my great grandmother telling me about growing up during the Depression and people would save everything, even scraps of paper and trash. This led to a lot of people becoming hoarders. My grandmother has one of those standup deep freezers stocked full of meat, vegetables, fruit, etc. The fridge is always fully stocked. She has a spare bedroom that is basically like a mini shopping mart complete with stocked shelves. She used to go to a discount grocery store that sold damaged stock like dented cans, and she would load up. I'm talking cardboard boxes full of shit. Any time we went over to see her she'd end up giving us bags and bags of food. Its just her and my grandpa. They don't even eat that much food. She's always calling me to ask if I want their leftovers, which I gladly accept, but they don't need that much food. I have other family members that are the same way. They'll buy so much food that it spoils or goes bad before they can eat it. There will be shit in the pantry from 5 years ago. I have the main staples that I always eat so I buy like 3-4 of them at the time. I'll buy meat to freeze, but my family goes overboard with it. They act like the grocery store will be gone tomorrow.

As fast as possible. The warehouse I worked at kept track of which cashier had the highest dollars per 30 min in sales. The fastest checker.. and posted it up front close to the check out, visible to all. Shoppers don’t see what goes on when the stores is closed and employees are usually on good behavior once the doors open. Not really. It is but you're sort of betting that you will eat/drink it before it goes bad. For example, buying a big box of cereal is an easy bet. You just open one bag and leave the other one closed. Cereal has a long shelf life when opened. If you buy a bulk size of milk with the 2 gallons, you better hope you drink all that milk before the week is over. It depends on the shelf life and if you can win the bet of buying in bulk, not to mention paying for memberships to these sorts of retailers which creates a bigger disadvantage in cost for the consumer.

I'm norwegian and I honestly don't understand the problem buying in bulk. Soaps, toothpaste, toiletpaper etc etc. Candy, chips and processed snacks is obviously not good, but that's more a question about consumption. The reason we aren't fat slobs here is because we culturally value modesty and health. If kids get obese it's adressed in our school and health care system. We view it as a very serious health problem very early on. We're norwegians, and there are certain cultural expectations that follows with that. Buying in bulk just means you're smart with your money. Most of us have huge pantries and stored foods. It's northen europe! Storing food is in our blood!
@johnpeterson9266
@johnpeterson9266 Ай бұрын
The # of times a day a European comments about "WE Europeans don't do this or do this unlike Americans". Dude, you're countrymen aren't as overweight because your food supply is healthier. GTFO about modesty and health, we have the same DNA. Europe doesn't even allow half of the chemicals in their food that are in the American food supply here. If you took one look at the average lunch of an American, I hate to break it to you but it has the same amount of calories that you guys are consuming. It's downright expensive to eat healthy in the USA and we are about 2 generations removed now from growing our own food and raising our own chickens.

I can answer. For one, the membership pays for itself pretty quickly just in gas savings. As for shopping itself, it's all about what you get. I go once a week and usually buy the same stuff everytime: $5 rotisserie chicken, $2.60 2lb strawberries, $6 3lb frozen organic blueberries, $6 48 oz greek yogurt. Of course I get other things too but those are my consistent weekly buys I go through and they feed me at least a meal each day of the week for less than $20. I can't do that at walmart. I could go on but I'm already long winded.

Costco ribeye is $12.99/lb while it’s $20-35/lb at other stores. When you are eating a meat based diet that savings is huge. 18 eggs are $7, much less than at the grocers. The organic half & half is a great price to make yogurt. The frozen Angus burgers are tasty. For a carnivore Costco & Sam’s Club are essential businesses. We see many eating there. Can you beat a hotdog and soda for $1.50? We see families feeding their kids there because it’s cheap.

We went to Costco once a month as a kid. We didn’t go back for any more food. The beginning of the month was great. Then the end of the month sucked ! My parents would get the big flat bed cart plus a regular cart and we would load it up. Costco helped us a lot because we lived out in the sticks. Our local grocery store was super expensive.

Something I noticed growing up. We shopped at a normal grocery store. We didn't have a stock pile of Costco goods at my house and money was tight. My mom would get up tight if we ate too much of the food too fast. I was always chubby. A lot of my skinny friends had parents with money who stock piled food and didn't care how much we ate. Basically, I lived in scarcity, so I would eat more. They lived in abundance so they would eat less. Crazy how those things affect your subconscious.

Once you learn to avoid junk at Costco that you'll never go through before it rots or you get sick of it... it's ok. I got to say I depart from Tim on this particular issue. Costco saves my family hundreds of dollars monthly. Local retail grocery prices are out of control. In terms of eating more just because you have more is a function of self-control. Give that a shot. As for me and my house we will continue to go to Costco😂
