Tomatoes need at least 8-10 hours of sun to grow and ripen successfully! Peppers also... shade is good for herbs,spinach and lettuce....👐🏻🙂

I have 4 1/2 hours of sun on my balcony and my tomatoes have and are doing great!
@flibbertygibbette4 жыл бұрын
This really depends on the variety! Some tomatoes have been bred to successfully grow with less sunlight and cooler temperatures, like Black Krim and San Francisco Fog. Several varieties of Roma and San Marzano tomatoes do well, too.
@flibbertygibbette4 жыл бұрын
Also, if you single stem your tomato vines and grow them vertically, with a short wall like that you could have a good three meter vine that gets plenty of sunlight once it grows above the wall line. Just be sure you get an indeterminate variety rather than a determinate one if you're going to do that.

I agree that you really need to look at the specific plant and instructions for growing. Lots of herbs need full sun. There’s always something that will work in any area though!

Tayloring your garden for bird and insect species is a great way to conserve natural habitats. I suggest looking into some wild flower species and plants that are great for bees and butterflies. You could also always get a small green house as well as a shed for fruit and vegetables. Such a beautiful garden already, I’m so jealous!

Don't put a greenhouse there if in it's the shade, that would be a complete waste of money! The first thing to always consider is light, it will dictate what you can and can't plant. I'm from the US and my zone is completely different from yours, but that rule is universal :) I'd recommend watching the LovelyGreens channel, she has resources for beginners!
@Wheezywatches4 жыл бұрын
You could hide the green container with lattice, do some beans or cucumbers along it. Use some stones to split that bed into a couple of sections even. I love watching Huw Richards on KZbin, he's welsh so a lot of what he plants would apply to you. Honestly with gardening there are some rules but youll never know until you try it. Lettuce is suppose to be easy but Ive killed three rounds of it yet kept a huge tomato plant alive with 5 hours of direct light.

So many options for your yard! I think you should patio the whole section like your originally planned to separate the lounge and the dining area. That way you can add some beautiful planters with some herbs and flowers and is less maintenance. I also think you won't feel so cramped with all the furniture in one area. It would be nice to make a more dedicated vegetable garden area in the back!

oh maddie how lovely! I have gotten into gardening throughout this quarantine and it is so great to have as a hobby alongside taking care of indoor plants. I would love to tell you that based on the exposure of the new bed you have, it may be a wonderful space for a perennial pollinator garden! perennials are great because they don't require much upkeep, they come back year after year, and they contribute loads to the ecosystem. if that area has a lot of sun, some great plants to consider are: lavender, coreopsis flower, echinacea or cone flower, and fox glove. these would give a great "wildflower" meadow feel to your yard, without feeling overgrown and overwhelming. please let me know if you need any other pointers or suggestions, I absolutely love the potential of your space and I am so excited to see what you end up doing with it.

Can't wait to see this come together! A good rule of thumb for vegetable gardens: if you are growing a plant for its fruit (e.g., tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, corn, etc.), that fruit takes a lot of energy to grow and thus the plant needs a lot of sunlight. If you are growing the plant for its leaves (e.g., lettuce, spinach, chard, some herbs), then less energy is needed and they don't need as much sunlight. Also, you can always spend a day checking out how much sun different areas of your garden get. That is, for how long and what time of day? For example, midday sun is very intense, so you would want to avoid growing a shade-loving plant in an area that gets a lot of this type of light. Or if you want to grow a sun-loving plant in a particular area that instead gets a lot of morning and afternoon sun, you might still meet its sun requirements! Just some tips. Good luck with your gardening adventures! :)

Wow, your garden is bigger than I expected. Do you really need a lounge and an eating area? We only have a table with 4 chairs and 2 benches in our small garden. I would just eat in your lounge area, but maybe I‘m weird 😂 The shady bed would be so lovely for shady loving plants and some veg. I would not expand the patio. Ours is really big and we regret it because beds always look nicer and plants in pots need to be watered very regularly - and I hate watering 🤣 I hope you will plant some bird and bee friendly trees, bushes and flowers. Fruit and veg also are lots of fun, some herbs in a sunny spot... And wild roses are my and the bees‘ fave! Maybe there is even space for a little pond? Your garden has lots of potential 😊

As a general rule for growing food, leafy things do well in shade, fruiting things do well in sun. Obviously there are special varieties to get around this, but it's a good guideline for what is likely to be easiest to grow well in a particular area when you're just getting started. It's also great fun to peek at other gardens in your area and see what they are growing successfully to give you ideas what might thrive in your garden.

I'm exited to see where it goes! I do have a shaded garden area as well, and there are some beautiful blooming plants that you can put there like hydrangeas, peonies and rhododendron along the back wall, with some smaller blooming plants in the front. I would suggest watching during the day to see when the light hits where, you might be surprised to see that shaded areas will get light during different times of day. Also, I would consider getting rid of that wall. I know it looks super cute and romantic, but if you have lots of people over the space will feel tight and unpractical. It's much more nice to move around when the patio is open to the rest of the garden.

Loved this, thank you. Its very satisfying seeing progress. I like the idea of an archway, but if you do choose a rose a thornless one would be good so as not to snag clothes etc and wait until your builders have finished to make like easier for them and prevent any damage. White flowers in a shaded area are good. There are many good youtube gardening clips. At the moment the National Gardens scheme have posted some super inspirational clips. Crocus is very informative too. I think you will really enjoy your garden. Make sure you know your soil type, probs acid in Cornwall. Get some evergreen structure and think of a colour scheme. Sorry you have probably already heard all this before. Enjoy. Look forward to your next clip.

Wow what a difference! The rule of thumb is plants grown for the roots and fruits like carrots and tomatoes love and need full sun (6+hrs), things grown for their leaves like spinach, lettuce and celery on the otherhand do well and a lot of the time enjoy part shade (3+) so still need some direct sun everyday. I don't know how many hours sun that whole bed gets throughout the day but if I were you id make the patio how you planned and make a garden bed somewhere else where all of it gets some sun everyday. I hope this helps, thanks for sharing :)

Beautiful job! I’m in Texas, but tomatoes need 6 hrs of direct sunlight. There are definitely some herbs and flowers that utilize some shade. Areas are separated into districts, based on soil elements, weather, etc. here. I would think the U. K. is too. Best to get on book on gardening, based on what you would like and your soil and weather conditions. My husband and I have retired and have been growing tomatoes and peppers. Historically, we haven’t done well with plants. Trying this gardening thing was a definite risk, more so for the plants. But, we’ve done well so far. You’ll love it once you decide your approach. Happy gardening.

I'd plant up a wildflower garden in that bit that overlooks the meadow. Then you'd have your own meadow and the bees and butterflies would be your new BFF's!! You don't want a patio beside an oil tank girl. No-one wants the taste of kerosene in their pinot noir! The seating are is lovely where you have it. Plant up some lettuce and things in the wee patch beside the tank. And don't forget containers - that little corner beside the window would be great for some containers. Anywhere on the patio. You can grow carrots and all sorts. Someone else suggested Monty Don's "Big dreams small spaces" and I second that. Another great yt channel for container gardening ideas (although in a different zone altogether) is Robbie and Gary Gardening

I would probably use that patch on the side to put up raised beds and you could easily plant lettuce, spinach (great late winter/early spring and autumn crop), or carrots. I would also use a sunny side of the garden to plant tomatoes, zucchini/squash, and maybe raspberries. I'd also put up pots for strawberries around the garden for fruit but also because they would look cool in like old clay pots. I would also put up an apple tree. This could be such a little heaven plus a good apple tree might also add some value to the property, not to mention all the apples you'll get ;) Gardening is honestly such an easy but fulfilling hobby. You think you don't know anything but you'll learn a lot by doing.

I word very highly recommend doing a little herb garden. Fresh herbs from the garden taste AMAZING. I only have a small baby garden and I'm still pretty new at it but it honestly is so worth it. I am only able to plant in pots because I rent, and they are maybe 30cm wide so not that big. Despite that I'm still able to grow tomatoes, peppers, kale, chives, onion and a bunch of herbs. In a plot like that you could plant rosemary, basil, chives, lavender, oregano, thyme and a few others. You seem to like spicy peppers when I grew a few they did well and gave a big harvest. Mind you I do get full sun, but I'm sure at least the herbs should work and it's not as hard as you think for an beginner to pick up.

Power washing is so satisfying! Garden looks so much better. A couple of things, while deciding on what to plant, cover the bed with a compost and mulch (leaf litter or hay) or all the weeds will come back fast. Kale, spring onions, lettuce & radishes are easy to grow for first time gardeners (buy seedlings (except radishes) rather than seeds until you get the hang of it). Tomatoes are from Sth America and need 6 hours per day of sunlight - cherry tomatoes are easy to grow. Herbs like thyme, Italian parsley, perpetual garlic. Any mints must go in a pot as they are invasive & will take over the bed. Grab 3 pallets & 4 metal posts to make your own compost heap for kitchen scraps (not citrus or onions), grass clippings & most weeds (not brambles) or get a worm farm to recycle your waste which will also give you free fertiliser tea as well. A water feature near the patio is always relaxing. Perennial plants(last more than one season) like lavender, agastache, daisies, foxglove, hydrangeas & roses are all pretty hardy. Any bulbs(tulips, iris, freesias,daffodils) don’t go in the ground til autumn. Hope this help❤️✨

Wow, looking good! I purchased my first book about gardening a couple months ago now. Always been a lover of indoor plants but now with the lockdown decided to have a go at balcony gardening as well. I can tell you tomatoes are fruits so they do need a LOT of sun but indeed herbs and also things like lettuce and Asian veggies (paksoi and cabbage), spinach, rucola, broccoli and potatoes grow really well in the shade (minimum of 2-3 hours sunlight a day). Just be aware that stuff like mint might take over the whole bed, so I would recommend to keep that in a pot if you want to have it! Also, love the arch idea!

I would add some low maintenance perennial food plants such as dwarf fruit trees, blueberry bushes and other berries, perennial herbs, maybe a rhubarb. Grow the things that you like to eat! Some veg like zucchini practically grow themselves. Then fill the gaps with bee-friendly perennials that grow well in your area, a local nursery or garden club would be able to help you out there. If you're not a garden enthusiast, I would stay away from bulbs and annuals as these add more work.

Ohhh gardening is the best and SO GOOD for mental health. Shady areas are good for leafy things such as lettuce, spinach, beetroot, pak choi, any brassicas. Herbs are always a good idea to keep by the kitchen door!! Leafy parsley, chives, coriander will do well there too and aren't going to bolt in the summer heat. Woody mediterranean herbs like lavender, thyme, rosemary, sage prefer a bit more sun and don't like wet roots, but you could keep them in pots so you can monitor water and move them around into the sunshine. Mint is great too for cocktails and tea, you can get so many different varieties - but ALWAYS plant them in pots, they are a thug. Look up potager gardens for a mix of veg and flowers. ENJOY !

I believe lettuce is quick-cropping, and doesn't require much sun. They actually prefer the shade, and bolt when it gets too warm. So yes, lettuce and herbs would do well in that corner? And maybe you could consider interplanting edible plants with pollinator-friendly low-maintenance flowers, like marigolds, nasturtiums, German chamomile, Michaelmas daisies etc? Interplanting would go with the informal, slightly over-grown vibe you like, and the bees will thank you! :) Oh, and Huw Richards and Charles Dowding have loads of videos on how to grow organically. I find their approach very fuss-free and earth-friendly :)
