When Esmerellda appeared the flames during Frollos 'Hellfire' song, she was originally supposed to be naked and was drawn as such, but the execs thought it a little *too* provocative so the animators had to dub her dress over later in post production.

Just a notice: this movie was the first to have the word 'curse' in it. Also, during the Hellfire song Frollo states that 'it's not his fault', but it is hinted that he actually realizes that it IS (the words 'mea culpa' in the background mean 'my fault')
@oliverbrownlow5615
@oliverbrownlow5615 3 жыл бұрын
While "mea culpa" literally means "my fault," I would suggest that in the context of the prayer that is being sung by the choir, it really means, "(it is) my fault." So what you're hearing is "It's not my fault." (It is my fault.) "I'm not to blame." (It is my fault.) I've seen this many times, but I never noticed that ironic contrast before.

@@oliverbrownlow5615 I LOVE how they incorporate some of the Catholic chants into the music. Like in the beginning when Frollo chases Quasimodo's mother, the choir in the background is singing a song about the Last Judgement that is usually sung at funerals (Dies Irae).

@@joshuagoodman5267 Dies Irae: Day of wrath! O day of mourning! Geez I can't say how much I love this film. The most mature and daring challenge ever done by the studio. One of my favorites Disney movies with one of my favorite soundtracks ever done by Alan Menken. It's so dark and melodramatic! Thanksfully, I watched it for the first when I was a teen. It would have scared my soul as a kid. Frollo is the final boss of Disney Villains. And the fact that he's so close to our reality with just his psychopathic mind (no evil powers, no megalomaniac plans) makes him the most creepiest Disney villains ever. The chemistries between the four main characters, Frollo Quasimodo Esmeralda and Phoebus, are amazing. Every character has the time to shine on screen. I also really appreciate the social commentary about racism. Yes, the book "Le Bossu de Notre Dame" is A LOT darker than this, but for Disney's standards, that was a real master stroke.

One of my favourite films of all time, great reaction! Also, not so fun fact: in the book, Esmeralda DOES die! (Hell, almost everyone dies lmao) Quasi is so consumed by grief that he goes to her grave and lays beside her body, and dies of starvation. An excavation-group finds them many years later, and sees their skeletons are still embracing each other. When they try and separate them, they both turn to dust. So yeah.. Disney had to 'lighten up' A LOT of the material for this movie (don't even get me started on Frollo's origin and his brother), but it is still one of the darkest pieces of art they have ever made, which I do appreciate.

You don't get much better than 90's Disney animation, as far as animation goes, this was for sure another level of dark, even for Disney, but I remember seeing this very young and most of the adult themes went right over my head. Does anyone remember those awesome Disney Game books from the early 90's? They were these books based on their animated properties, I feel like they were kind of a where's Waldo sort of thing but I could be wrong, they had a sound bar on the side of the pages that played sound bytes from the movie.

it was one of disneys darker movies. also the term gypsy was a derogatory term to describe the romani people
@TherealRNOwwfpooh
@TherealRNOwwfpooh 9 сағат бұрын
You mean IS. It wasn't seen as derogatory then, else Disney wouldn't have included it in the dialog for the villain (Frollo), the deformed hunchback Quasimodo ("You're not like other [G-word], they're...evil"), and even Romani representative Esmeralda herself ("...and a [G-word]" after Quasi reminds her that she's kind & good, the line "I didn't know if you would listen to a [G-word's] prayer" as part of the song _God Help the Outcasts_ sung by Esmeralda to benefit her people as other worshipping parishioners asked for selfish things that only benefited themselves alone) to say.

@TherealRNOwwfpooh
@TherealRNOwwfpooh 9 сағат бұрын
@@invadertifxiii But it wasn't just Frollo who said it. The Romani leading lady/heroine herself, Esmeralda, used it, as did our hunchbacked main character & they're 2/3rds of the good guys out of the main cast (the other being Pheobus after he turned against Frollo's orders to burn the miller's house, just because the miller had a talisman belonging to the Romani on his property [a protective charm gifted to him & his family for their kindness, I'm guessing] & told Frollo, "Our door is always open to the weary traveler" yet "We know nothing of these [g-words], I assure you! Have mercy, my lord!"). Even our jester narrator Cloplin (also of the Romani people, like Esmeralda) used it during the _Bells of Notre Dame_ intro to the film ("Dark was the night, when our tale was begun, on the docks near Notre Dame. Four frightened [g-words] slid silently under the docks near Notre Dame. But a trap had been laid for the [g-words] & they gazed up in fear & alarm, at a figure whose clutches were iron as much as the bells. The Bells of Notre Dame.").

@TherealRNOwwfpooh I agree and I'm no expert but I believe the Romani people referred to themselves as such. I'm not 100% sure on that though just what modern day folks who are of Romani heritage have told me

@@invadertifxiii Even something tamer like classic _Scooby-Doo_ used the term when dealing with deceptive criminal fortune tellers ("The Actor" in _Hassle at Dracula's Castle_ for example) in some episodes. To be fair, Disney's _Hunchback_ adaptation came out in 1996, whereas _Scooby-Doo_ came out in the late 1960's, so different cultural standards apply. Even going back further, the classic Universal Studio monster movie _The Wolfman_ from 1941, starring Lon Chaney Jr. as the titular lycanthrope Lawrence "Larry" Talbot relied on the warnings from the old woman Bella (mostly likely named after Bella Legosli [Universal's _Count Dracula_ from the same canon, basically, which is confirmed thanks to the existence of Dark Universe as a land strictly dedicated to the classic monster movies of Universal as part of Epic Universe debuting early next year]), who is clearly among the Romani herself, too, given the stereotypical attire & the memorable poem pertaining to wolfsbane that she tells Larry even before he ever gets bitten (In the movie, too, the old lady even tells Larry that it was her own son who had inflicted him with the curse of becoming a werewolf). After all, Transylvania is part of Romania & the two are often used interchangeably by common people who know no better.

To Frollo himself, it would be romantic, but that's only to sedate his own lust more so than for Esme's own comfort (as he said when he had her literally burning at the stake, "I can save you from the fires of this world [the fire literally lapping at her feet at the moment] & the next [meaning, Hell]. Here's the cast album of the live musical which "almost" made it to Broadway. Costs for employing a huge choir stopped the show from making it's debut in NYC. It played in both California and New Jersey where the cast (on this recording) perfected the show. The live version more closely follows the Victor Hugo novel and it doesn't have the animated happy ending-definitely not for kids. This would have been a spectacular show on Broadway. So dark but so good, Disney covering more complex themes than just a dead parent back in the 90s. Got gaslighting, abuse, lust, blackmail, racism, corruption, zealotry, self-loathing, unrequited love, only a handful of Disney movies now cover half as many themes and do it so well. Frollo is horrific in how real he is, Quasimodo's journey is amazing to go against the path of getting the girl and earning acceptance - something he needed more , and the music is top notch it still baffles me how this didn't get the credit it deserves when it came out

He murders Quasimodo's mother on the steps of a church, nearly drowns Quasimodo as a baby, only takes him in to save his soul from damnation, locks him away in the churches belltower, abuses him by calling him ugly and how the world will shun him for it, and to top it all of, he lied about how his mother abandoned him and he willingly adopted him.

As a kid I felt really bad for Quasimodo not "getting the girl". It had sort of been ingrained in me, even that early, that the hero is supposed to get the girl. But this is a healthier lesson to learn. Esmeralda loves Quasimodo, just not romantically, but that does not cheapen their relationship. Quasimodo is heartbroken, but he still cares about her and he doesn't put the blame on Esmeralda or feel like she owes him anything (wich Frollo totally does). And he can still appreciate the platonic relationship they share without becoming bitter or jealous. Sure, he is a bit jealous of Pheobus when the heartbreak is still fresh but move past it. I guess my point is; can we just normalise relationships that aren't romantic in movies?

By the way, the original novel was written by Victor Hugo, whom also wrote Les Misérables. The novel is great, and much darker. But Disney really did a good job of turning this into one of their movies and still keeping some dark elements. Out of the movie adaptations that stay closer to the book, I like the 1956 version. And of course we have the musical Notre Dame de Paris, which is amazing and also rather true to the original.

Frollo is the greatest Disney villain ever, there I said it... he's the most real evil there is in any Disney film; powerful, smart, cunning, respected and looked up to by many, capable of both physical and mental abuse without the victim/victims knowing he's even doing it to them and most importantly of all... everything he does he thinks is "right", indeed there's a part of him that is a monster and he probably somewhat acknowledges that, however the majority of the time he truly thinks he is the good, righteous person prepared to make the tough choices for a "greater good". He is a monster truly because he no longer can see nor no longer wants to see his own evil. Yes, it looks like he revels in it, but there's a truly scary part of him which believes every single thing he is doing is good, it's like he is at war in himself and ultimately he lets evil win... Disney made a film that is so true to what evil is that it made many people find it too dark, when the truth is that they actually made a film that is the most *truthful* about what evil is, and for a film studio that makes the most positive and brightest stories that shine a light on the happier moments in life, I think it is so important they made this film to equally shine a light on the darkest and most evil parts of humanity...

It is now among my top disney movies and top movie osts. Its brilliant, dark, and has one of THE most evil and complex villains of all disney movies. Frolo is a true and very real villain, simply being a man of power consumed by his own pride and blinded by his own self-beliefs. And the song "God Bless the Outcasts" is an amazingly great song that we would sadly never see today. -_- This is definitely a movie better appreciated by adults fans of disney, rather then children.

@@summerrose8110 First, he was a child, second, even though non-romantic relationships are important to show, how many relationships between people considered ugly and not ugly do you see on Disney? This movie could have been the first in Disney history to say that even if you're not "pretty" on the outside, you can be romantically attractive on the inside, third, even if that's not the point of the movie, it still makes MUCH less sense to Esmeralda stays with Phebeus, who literally sees her for the first time as a hot woman, unlike Quasimodo, who sees her as kind and empathetic
@TherealRNOwwfpooh
@TherealRNOwwfpooh 9 сағат бұрын
@@sthepcorms6747 Too bad. In the original story, everyone but Pheobus dies. Frollo dies, but is more sympathetic in the Victor Hugo novel than he is in the Disney film, possibly because Frollo is literally a priest in the novel, rather than just a minister/judge. Esmeralda dies, too. When her skeleton is discovered, the skeleton of Quasimodo is literally clutching onto her, so when someone tries to separate the two, they crumble to dust (for as the old religious saying goes, "You are dust & unto dust you shall return"). Pheobus in the novel only loved Esmeralda superficially, since he was already seeing someone before his attraction to the Romani girl stole his attention. Once Esmeralda died, Pheobus left Paris to go be with the person he had his eyes on after his brief fling with Esmeralada. However, the characters & plot really take a backseat to the upkeep & restoration of the Notre Dame Cathedral as that's the primary reason Victor Hugo wrote his novel to begin with. He wanted the church to be restored to its full glory, rather than being torn down (as was being considered by the French government, at least before the novel was written). Hunchback basically kept the Cathedral standing. It's just unfortunate that it somehow burnt significantly a few years back.

One of the darkest and realistic Villain in Every Disney Film, I always thought back then Cinderella’s step mom is one of the realest Villain. But Frollo, yeesh, I thought even Satan will be scared of him.

I would honestly recommend checking out older Disney movies since you liked the animation, music and tone of Hunchback of Notre Dame, specifically the 'Disney Renaissance' period in the late 80s-early 90s. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid are stables. Your reactions to all the key moments were fun to see.

I'm glad more people are coming to appreciate this movie, I think it's one of Disney's best. I'd also recommend DreamWorks' The Prince of Egypt, which I believe to be the best animated musical
