When Joker isn’t Joker. Joker: Folie à Deux not only exposes Todd Phillips for his lack of original ideas, it also shows that he either doesn’t understand his own story or doesn’t care about his own story. Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, and Todd Phillips decide to blow 200 million on a vanity project that hates its own audience. Let’s discuss the real problems with Joker: Folie à Deux

To be fair, your rant was at least a bit nuanced compared to all the other Anglican youtubers out there, plus, you even did the effort of pronouncing the title correctly. Overall though, I think you are just too mainstream-wired and not capable of grasping a radical arthouse approach of this extent. Which is astonishing, that they even dared to do pull that off, given these dire times, where blockbuster movies are strictly made to a calculated formula by studio executives. But different expectations lead to different opinions, all I can say is, that here in Europe the film is also discussed differently, and I personally think it's one fine set of two movies, that will age very well with time.

Joker was Taxi Driver/The King of Comedy. Joker 2 should've been One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest/A Clockwork Orange. I think if Todd Phillips stuck to copying older films, it would've worked. It was a missed opportunity to tell a gritty, disgusting, institutional story. The first film gave us glimpses of how malfunctioned, and utterly flawed healthcare in Gotham is. Citizens with mental health issues in Gotham are treated like scum. Let's delve deeper into that, Run with that. Tell a rich story that just so happens to have Joker in it. Arkham could've been a trough of material.

I've seen so many comments saying how this movie should've been Arthur meeting Harleen Quinzel while in Arkham, seeing a "imitator Joker" (played by Willem Dafoe) out on the loose in Gotham on the news, and that the Joker persona should've "taken over" Arthur, turned Quinzel into Harley Quinn, and escaped Arkham with Harley, only to confront the "imposter" Joker and lose to him, while Harley switches to the "new" Joker instead. The fans would've made a better sequel than the guy who actually made the first movie.

Not necessarily. It seems like Phillips didn't want to make a sequel, but you must remember the IP isn't his. It's entirely possible the studio sat down with him and said "Look, we're going to make a sequel and if you don't direct it, we'll find someone else who will and pay them a ridiculous amount. Just make a sequel." So he did, and he made sure it would be hated and end with Arthur dying so any notion of more movies would be unthinkable. The movie genuinely had so much potential. Phoenix and Gaga made some very good performances, the idea of having a Joker and Harley movie be a musical where they are the only ones singing and dancing to show them being completely divorced from reality due to the tonal clash between them and the rest of the movie could have been amazing (that's how I interpreted it once it was revealed it would be a musical, I was legitimately very interested in that idea), unfortunately ..... the movie did not know what it wanted to be and was all over the place.... scratch that, the movie knows exactly what it wanted to be, and that is a hate letter to the fans. Folie a Deux? More like Folie a DOODOO! The biggest thing that even made Joker a thing was it literally being labelled by the media as "inspiring violence"... even though Frozen 2 literally had more violence ar screenings back then! "We live in a Society" and "Clown World" are very popular sentiments, and that's why people loved this Joker. He's a murderer, sure, and his methods are very wrong, but some of his sentiments weren't wrong. This is WB intentionally sabotaging the movie. They made something their creditors didn't allow them to make. The first movie nicely paints DEI as the menace it really is.

It doesn't seem like he was some genius who has fallen since the first Joker. He lucked out with it. He captured lightning in a bottle with the first movie by paying homage to 2 great films, with a great cinematographer, and focusing it on an amazing actor. I mean yeah he made beloved comedies 20 years ago and also struck gold with Hangover but his recent trajectory wasn't exactly stellar. Hangover 2, Due Date, Hangover 3, Joker, Joker 2. One of these things is not like the rest. Im not saying he wasn't capable of proving me wrong but I'm just not all that surprised. Perhaps he should've made a tribute to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Honestly this take of the Joker is just as pathetic in my pov, both losers. The director forced a "clown revolution" out of nowhere to justify the comic book source material, Joker is supposed to be a charismatic "prince of crime", but how the hell a caricature of suffering could justify that? Then here it comes the Batman origin just to complete the shitty package. To think people seriously compared this pretentious garbage with Heath Ledger is something hilarious to me, Oscar bait overactor vs real talent

The beauty of Joker lies in his chaos. Imagine the first half being about Arthur's prison break from Arkham with Quinns help. Imagine the second half being about him forming his own massive gang and going apeshit on the town to bring about his own definition of fairness and order and in doing so, creates opportunities for the fledgling versions of classical gotham villains to rise among the ranks. And towards the end it starts to unravel as their people start getting picked off one by one. Someone is taking a stand against their empire. Final scene. That someone leaves their calling card for the joker. It's a batarang. The end.

My hot take in 2019 was that Joker was rushed and vapid, and hid its storytelling incompetence behind pretentiousness and artsy cinematography. I was never convinced that it even know what it was trying to say, only that audience members cleverer than the movie’s actual writer were projecting their own far better interpretations onto it and rating it too highly as a result.

Todd's making a Batman movie next apparently. Bruce will be a depressed loser over his parents death, go out dressed as Batman once then on his second attempt at crime fighting get gang graped by thugs then shanked. But a young boy walking past will see it and put two sticks behind his ears to look like bat ears, implying he will maybe become Batman. If you don't like it it's just because you don't ''get'' it.

There is no indication that most of those are dream sequences in the trailer. And why did they tell us what actually happened when he broke into his neighbours apartment? The first movie was a masterpiece because it left us not knowing what happened. Plus the 1st movie was shocking in a good way when it was exposed that he had imagined the friendship with the neighbour. In joker 2 it was obvious all the music stuff was him dreaming. No surprises or the creepiness we got so much of in Joker 1. I’m going to erase this movie from my memory so that Joker 1 can remain my favourite movie ever.

It’s a stretch to call this a comic book movie. Not only has the character got nothing to do with the Joker from the Batman source material, but we found out at end of this movie that he isn’t even actually the in-universe Joker of this narrative either. Calling the first movie Joker was just bait to get current cinema goers interested in seeing a project that was far far more interested in Taxi Driver etc than any Batman comics. This Arthur Fleck is just random some guy. The movie could have been called anything other than Joker and nothing important would be affected. The reference to the Wayne family was only there as window dressing to try to convince viewers that they were watching a Batman spinoff.

Harley was Joker's psychiatrist in original story. They can developed them both with Harley falling for him which would fully solidify his Joker persona. They even have a perfect avenue to introduce new doctor Harley after Joker kills his previous psychiatrist. UPD. Why Arthur became Joker? Because when he was a good man noone gave a fuck about him. In the final scenes when he danced on the car his desire for attention was fulfilled. So he's in asylum/prison awaiting trial. It takes months, city calmed down and people began to forget about him. His new psychiatrist tells him that during one of their sessions. Joker would be pissed and would start to look for an opportunity to remind everyone about himself. So he gives a spectacle at the court room with explosion in the end in which both Joker and Harley dissappear. There. The suitable progression for a character, clear goal and means to achieve it (Harley), new character for Joker to bounce of (Harley), suitable "ending". 200$ and several years to write Joker 2 instead.

An example of a delusion would be if Arthur's neighbor kept blowing him off and he just says she's playing hard to get, but is still deeply in love with Arthur. Simple archetypes: Delusions = conspiracy theorist Hallucinations = haunting Psychosis = not fun
