NOTE: weapons are dangerous. Some types may be illegal to own or carry where you live around the world. These videos are primarily designed to provide a historical flavour of how things may have worked, or were taught / used. The onus is always on you to know the law and the repercussions as it applies to you. Train safely and responsibly.

While working as a road crew member for a band...one night a bouncer said, "Hey guys, I might need a little help here." Two drunks who had been ejected , came back with 4 friends. BUT, they had to come up some stairs, so they could only approach him one at a time. He held the spring in his hand with about two or three inches hanging out the thumb side of his fist. He used fast, sharp jabs. Every time he hit a drunk, the lead weight went forward hitting them about an inch to the left of his knuckle. I was impressed, both with his skill , and the effectiveness of a blackjack.

I do leathercraft and the first thing I made was a leather sap, used bb’s for weight and with improvements later I put a 5” door spring in the grip so I wouldn’t hurt myself with recoil. I did use my sap once. I am 71 years old and a 20 something year old tried to rob me. One strike to the ribs and one to the side of the neck. He was down until the police got there. I have concealed carry but I wouldn’t shot someone unless I suspected they had a firearm also. I don’t understand why you can carry a firearm but it’s unlawful to have a sap. Great video.

When I was much younger (12) I was at a family party where my uncle volunteered me to be a practice dummy for a old time cop ( retired 1960) giving a master class to new guys on flat saps. He Knew all the spots to hit , shoulders, elbows top of a thumb, knees and how to as he said make ‘em comply or get a confession and not leave a mark.

So...he was unethical, bad at his job and like most of 'em, relied on violence to coerce confessions of dubious truth and usefulness. I wonder how many innocent people confessed to crimes they didn't commit to make your uncle stop hitting them with what could be a deadly weapon. Great story, bud.

I've made a couple of long saps, but incorporated a thick steel cable that runs the length of the sap's. I got the finest lead shot I could find on the internet, which is fantastic, very fine, like sand. I mixed it with a contact adhesive, so that it solidified into a lump, and wouldn't pour out if the stitching in the leather gave way I find saps a quite elegant weapon.

You should really make an KZbin channel, sir! There's nobody teaching the correct art of crafting these devices.

@@abcdef501 Sadly, I've had to stop making anything for about 16 months, due to a work injury (and also due to lack of money through being off work). However, if I get back on my feet, I have a nice piece of Veg tanned leather that's big enough to make a couple of Saps. If I make anything, I'll film it and put it on KZbin, and tell you in this comment thread. I'll make a note to remind me.
@abcdef501

@@jeffreybarton1297 thank you very much! How do you connect the steel cable with the lead? You melt it in? Or you don't connect it at all and just wrap the leather around? And ever tried to make a blackjack, or only saps? 😄

Omg I'm so sorry, it's middle in the night here and I completely forgot that you said how you connect it!
@jeffreybarton1297
@jeffreybarton1297 8 ай бұрын
@@abcdef501 I didn't worry about connecting the cable, although I could have easily done it by simply pushing it into the lead shot/glue mix, while it was still wet. The leather layers are thick enough to not even bend at that point, so it doesn't make much difference. I haven't made a Blackjack yet, but I love the look of them. If I do, I'll have to do some research to find out the process of wrapping them. They look great, and even more lethal than Saps. Have you made any weapons yet?

@DavidHernandez-dk1zs

That's not true, the reason they stopped carrying was simply because it was too effective. Police had the misconception that using a sap on someone was not as bad as using a truncheon because the sap was smaller and flexed, they thought it was less lethal so many times cops would wail on people and smack them silly on the head. After many suspects suffered irreparable brain damage or died of head injuries, the police did away with the sap and replaced it with the baton. Most cops preferred the sap over the baton, from what I've heard.

Late to vid. Have say. Almost any part of face you get good contact with that sap you are using…it’s gonna break some bones. Easy. My brother n law use carry one in early 80s when cops were still allowed to use them. They are very deadly also. But I have had many injuries in life. I cannot fathom the pain of getting hit anywhere on face with that thing. Looks painful just looking at the sap alone lol. Very underrated self defense tool today.

I was playing with my blackjack one time and I accidentally dropped it on my face from a height of like 12 inches or less. The head of the jack fell right on my eyebrow and it swelled up a little bit and left a welt. I cannot imagine ever using this on someone's face unless it was life or death, I have no doubt in my mind that a jack or sap can easily fracture and break a person's skull with a full swing, even a light tap will break teeth.

Oh yeah. I’m gonna get one. I forgot about these until I saw these vids. Like said before bro n law was a cop and they carried them in early 80s. I hit my hand with it lol. The pain is just so intense. That was me just hitting palm hand lol. You come full swing with this thing across face it’s gonna take them down. I’m sure will break bones possibly worse if hit just right. But the damn intense pain is what’s gonna drop them. Probably figure out they have broken face after the initial pain calms lol. I like them because just carry in back pocket. Not a pain to have one on ya at all times

You hit someone on the back of the head with a sap and that guy is gonna be lucky if he ever wakes up again. A sap will easily fracture a human skull, and the back of the head is one of the most lethal spots to hit a person, even pro boxers have gotten severe brain damage and died from getting punched in the back of the head while wearing thick padded gloves. Remove the gloves and replace it with a hard piece of lead wrapped in leather and that's basically what you are doing with a sap
