Tony Bennett is a great American in every way possible. He really did bring country music mainstream as a starter. My mother loved him and one of my happiest times with her was seeing him live. And now he's really a living legend - he's bringing kids to understand the fantastic Great American Songbook and understand real music. And he's always been a liberal who lived it and still speaks the truth. 85 and going stong! Love you so much, Anthony!

It’s hard not to be sad and heartbroken to see him gone. We all left our hearts to him, one of the best singers and human beings. Miss him so much already.

On this day in 1951 {November 3rd} "Cold, Cold Heart" by Tony Bennett peaked at #1 {for 6 weeks} on Billboard's Best Sellers chart... He replaced himself at #1; his "Because of You" had been #1 for 8 weeks on the Best Sellers chart... On May 12th, 1951 the song's composer, country legend Hank Williams, took it to #1 on Billboard's Country chart... R.I.P. Mr. Williams {1923 - 1953} and Mr. Bennett, aka Anthony Dominick Benedetto, celebrated his 87th birthday three months ago on August 3rd...

When. I was 12 years old, my mother joined a record club and one of the albums she ordered was the one with, “ I Left My Heart in San Francisco “ on it. Have been a fan since then. Check out Mary Lou by the Creative Force, Amazing!

(The incredibly sensitive and virtuosic guitarist backing him up is Boston's own Gray Sargent.) For me, the hallmark of a great performance of a song, of any kind, is when it evokes in me a feeling, as if I'm understanding, for the first time, what the song is really about: Sylvia Sims singing "My Ship" is one example; Willie Nelson singing "Once In a While" is another; Tony Bennett singing this Hank Williams tune, live, on "Imus in the Morning" (back when it was still on MSNBC), certainly represents such an experience.

Beautiful voice and handsome guy! I have a cousin that married a man that could have Tony's twin. People would tease him saying, "Well hello their Tony!"

Not only did Tony Bennett do Hank Williams song - but also James Brown, Chubby Checker, Little Richard, Van Morrison and Leon Russel both did complete albums of Hanks' music and many others.

I am a very big Hank Williams fan and it makes me proud to see artists from every genre covering his music. Such artists as Ray Charles, Charlie Pride, and of course Tony Bennet I have read that Hank Williams would select Tony Bennett's version on the juke box and committed favorably on his singing

As his voice has got older this song is even more poignant, And apparently when this song came out in 1951 Hank was ecstatic and used to play it on the juke box in the bar

"Hey Tony!" said Hank on the phone: "Why you go and ruin my song?" Hit the "back one hour" button on Sirius streaming in HiFi on the computer (the novelty will never wear off!) and it's Tony Bennett addressing an adoring audience . . . “Mitch Miller was the first musician I knew, to realize that there was 'gold' in Country music - because of one man, Hank Williams: Mitch had me record Cold, Cold Heart.” At KZbin, first 'live' performance offering is this one -- with a different spoken intro, worth transcribing, in which Tony adds that, “In those days Country music just stayed in the 'Bible Belt.' [Because of Mitch] Rosemary Clooney and I were really the first 'American Idols'! He really started us off and . . . anyway, he had this Hank Williams song - Mitch showed it to me - and I said, 'It's a great song, Mitch. That Hank Williams really knows how to write songs . . . BUT I'm a city boy, and I wouldn't be able to sing a Country song.' Mitch said, 'If we have to tie you to a tree, you're going to have to sing this song, whether you like it or not!' So he tied me to a tree! It was the first Country song to sell internationally all over the world.” Look beyond the dated limitations of an MSNBC video tape recording someone made 13 years ago. The sound is mighty fine! [Below the video, an informed note from a kindred soul] Sauquoit13456 (5 years ago) On this day in 1951 {November 3rd} "Cold, Cold Heart" by Tony Bennett peaked at #1 {for 6 weeks} on Billboard's Best Sellers chart... Whoever does a new iteration of this song, will ALWAYS be compared to whichever version of it each person prefers. Don't like this version?! No worries, like your preferred version. Personally, I'd rather hear a complete version of the song with an actual arrangement, rather than the way most cover this tune. Sometimes a song goes to a new and often better level when it's stylized...
