Tony Hutson: Don't Act Spiritual, Or God Will Strike You Dead in Here

In the sermon "We're Winning," preached on September 14, 2011, at North Valley Baptist Church, Tony Hutson quotes a Country song by Hank Williams, Jr, and then tells the folks not to act spiritual or God will strike them dead.

Tony Hutson likes to throw the phrase around that, "God will strike you dead if..." I'm not one to tempt God, but when someone uses the phrase so flippantly, it starts to lose some of it's credibility, especially if you never see someone struck dead by God.

Here we go again. A pastor can act any way he wants, in this case even quoting the lyrics to a "worldly" song, a song that would most likely be preached against in most IFB churches. But if you don't act the way the preacher thinks you should act, or in other words, if you display any temperament other than what the preacher is looking for, God will strike you dead. Now, I'm not one to tempt God. I think that is very dangerous ground, as Jesus said, "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." But that's different than going around and flippantly telling folks, "God will strike you dead," because they may not like what is said from the pulpit.

I don't think we should tempt God either. The thing of it is many legalistic preachers will accuse anyone who doesn't go precisely by everything they say of tempting God. They're as good as claiming equal footage with God.

@@debbiebrown4420 Absolutely. I'm not one to go around and do the opposite of what a preacher says just to prove a point. But at the same time, it's good to have the wisdom to know when a preacher is taking advantage of his position.

I wonder if Tony felt something when he heard the Happy Goodmans sing, I wouldn't take nothing for my journey now. I gotta make it to Heaven somehow? That seems to be lying about the Holy Spirit who has sealed the believer unto the day of redemption.
