It is worth mentioning that apart from the cardiovascular system, we have a second, often overlooked circulatory system. That is the lymphatic system. Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system has no dedicated pump. It is absolutely reliant on the changes of pressure caused by MOVEMENT.

as someone who has suffered from chronic pain for many years, gotten stuck in a defensive state of over-resting, had massive muscle atrophy, gotten too weak to attempt most exercises... and then eventually, slowly but surely been able to reverse that downward spiral.. I fully agree, and wish I'd come upon such nuanced & honest wisdom ages ago.

This video is the truth. I've let my body deteriorate by sitting all night at work, and coming home sleeping. When I started working on a case where I had to use more muscle and stand a little more, my body was literally crying out for the first few weeks, but then it started adjusting. I know that I need to start working out, again, and it will be hard at first, but it does get easier as time goes on. In the end, it's worth going through the discomfort, because you gain your strength back.

having gone from 10 hours "working out" to not being able to walk a flight of stairs without pausing because of first an accident and then pneumonia.. yeah it's horrifying how fast you lose muscle mass and stamina. I'm slowly and (somewhat) painfully working back to being halfway active, it's hard but last month I walked the same steps I used to sprint up after my lunch break without pausing or being completely knackered and it feels amazing.

After many years of depression, inactivity and malnourishment, I found myself at a BMI of 17, with severe muscle atrophy, and extremely low range of motion in nearly all joints/muscles. I have tried pulling myself back on top with daily high intake of protein based foods, and a mix of daily kettlebell exercises and your videos to try and correct my extreme pelvis tilt and hunchbag posture..! It's not easy being so weak, your muscles starts shaking and fatigues from something as "low output" as the thing you're doing in this video. And this sets in almost as soon as you start doing the exercise - the result is that the exercise becomes almost un-doable. Just getting a neutral pelvis position so your lower back is in contact with the surface while lying down is nearly impossible! But you're absolutely right, the only way out, is to get your hands dirty and start pulling yourself out of the mess.

The chronic osteoarthritis I’ve dealt with for ten years is hardly noticeable now that I move intentionally throughout the day, particularly strength training with PT exercises. The OA will signal when I need to move. 20 min later I’m good for another 12 hours or so. You’re so right in all of this and our Western work method that chains us in repetitive motion day after years. PT is body freedom as long as we listen and respond appropriately to our body. Thank you for all you do.

@@carolinejohn4537 I hope Matt sees your question and addresses it. What do people do who have structural things that inhibit what they can do, or what they can do as well as cause pain. My own uninformed musing says "move everything else". I think that that would be at least a fair starting point (?). PS: You didn't mention whether or not use any mobility assistance. There have been times in my life when I've needed to use a cane, sometimes two. I would suggest it's better to use assistance to be more active if it's at all possible. Again, Matt may have some comment on that.

@@carolinejohn4537 Caroline, as long as the OA joint is not inflamed, learn to move the muscles around it. a PT can show you how and start slow. Very slow BUT regular, consistent. Movement should not induce pain but relieve ie. there might be a discomfort but not pain. So first I had to learn not to aggravate the inflammation but cure that first through diet and ice. Then I could start moving - stretching and strengthening. No gritting involved but I’m no athlete either!

@@lindasue8719 in 2012 for four months I used canes while there was inflammation in my knees. In 2016 after ankle surgery initial recovery, I used a combo of walker and crutches. I haves used the crutches off and on when there was inflammation. The ankle injury threw my spine into fits, so there’s that now too. However, finding PT physical therapy has been a godsend. Starting with little slow but targeted movements brought fast relief. Now, it’s just daily maintenance. And keep listening to Matt. What he advices is golden.

Felt sore while sleeping and icky the entire next day. Called my PT and he said he probably overworked me and I had DOMS. I slept 9 hrs last night and woke feeling much better today. DOMS was no joke for a full day. Glad I looked into it rather than quitting. Also I will not push it so far next time and I think my PT now knows where my level is at. We were strengthening my lower traps and core muscles very minimal as we think I have Costochondritis but come bedtime my entire torso was so sore.

What do animals (including ourselves) have in common? - they are **animated**/they move. We are creatures that are meant to move. Unfortunately the Western system anyway, works in large part against that. One can get quite philosophical about it, we are part of a universe that is in constant motion, and we are a microcosm in motion. I know about chronic pain, and I'm a formerly very flexible person who - unintentionally - through habit and convention has lost much of that flexibility. I really become cognizant of that now, and as somebody else said, the idea of getting back on the floor has been a great starting point. I've missed being down there, and I didn't even realize it! PS: yesterday I was getting up from the floor, and I didn't even notice until I was up that I didn't go through my usual maneuvers lol... I was actually up without using my hands, and I have NO idea when that last happened. Probably decades.

I was a fitness junkie about 10 years ago and somewhat kept it up so my fitness level didn't drop too much over the years. Then depression hit me couple of years ago and for a year I basically refused to move when I could to avoid being exhausted. That freeze response stopped but now if I try to get back to exercising or even just walking or existing in upright postion, I feel utterly exhausted. After being out for couple of hours, or sitting in the office, the next day I wake up feeling like I was hit by a train or ran a marathon. The good feeling after exercising or the next day proud aching is just not there anymore. I just can't believe how weak I feel. It is nothing like when I used to think "oh I am so unfit". Maybe I should think that I am in recovery, like people after injury/surgery. Maybe I will be able to build it up. ❤

it's incredible how it all connects, last year i started going on mini hikes every morning (3km), i would get up really early come home to start my day, and maybe take a nap at some point, but it was physically impossible to me to sleep more than 6 or 7 hours. My sleep schedule was perfection. Right now I'm at my heaviest ever, I'm trying to slowly get back out there, my diet is absolute crap, and I need at least 8 hours of sleep, and i still feel the need to take naps. The more inactive and unhealthy you are, the less your body wants to move. I know I'm sore because my muscles are crying for help, but most days i don't have the energy. It is a cycle that's really hard to break.

What you say it is absolutely true! And I am totally suprised with people who wishing to achieve any level of strength without any discomfort. "Thanks" to our shitty medical system I got serious problems with my left lef and practically couldn't walk for 8 months, mostly lying down, and with my low blood pressure level and spinal problems can you imagine in what condition I found myself after 8 months of this "regime"? I was like Isak - even lying down was uncomfortable :) I went swimming, I went to yoga and oh my gosh, first 2 months were a real hell for me, because I couldn't do almost anyhing...after 1,5 h of training I was feeling like I wish I could die...but then I started feeling like I've never felt any better in my whole life! It is such a nice sensation when your body is capable of doing things it never could do before. Now I'm again passing through a difficult phase healthwise and over a year without active exercising, just stretching and walking a lot, little bit of a bycicle in a gim, and I still feel myself like an old wrecked ship...but I know, after I start exercise again, after few months I will be back in shape because it exactly how body works - the more you make it work, the stronger it gets.

Oh man, I found this quite an emotional video to watch: in my bad years, yeah, trying to lie with the small of my back connected to the floor was pretty hard, too (too much tightness in the muscles up and down my spine, and I was 'protecting' myself by curling more into it.) My sharing for the Isaacs out there is: Hang in there! and also, find something that you like enough to persevere through the discomfort for. The initial thing that helped for me was having children - having to run around after a baby and a toddler got me moving more (I had much faster bounceback after my second baby, even with a harder delivery), and over time, the fact that I was hanging out with them in playgrounds and Parent and Me activities got me going back around again and extending myself in activities I just hadn't been exposed to since I was a kid. And then I got brave enough to try an adult exercise class, and yes, Matt's right, my quality of life has gotten a lot better from moving more and doing strength work.

thanks so much for this video, matt. firstly, let me say that i have always been physically active and my gym schedule was an integral part of my daily routine, particularly cardio work with resistance training. due to the shutdowns and isolations from the pandemic, i can really see the effect of NOT exercising as i used to. now that things are opening up, particularly in my local area, i have started, once again, on a routine similar to pre-pandemic levels and i have to say that i am sore ALL of the time, it seems. however, to your point of ATM, i can feel the difference and strength returning to my body in that my flexibility and agility is beginning to return (and at my age, i just turned 67 - that is somewhat miraculous. lol!! i am incredibly fortunate to be able to do what i can do. (while weight wise, i lost about 5 lbs, my body fat percentage reached 40%.) because i have been able to return to my cardio routines, i have brought it down to 31.3% and still have a ways to continue. all in all, you are absolutely right. while it is uncomfortable it is necessary to combat the pain and discomfort from lack of mobility with the "discomfort" from activating those muscles. thanks again

I'm only 23 and I even had this problem. Was a big gym goer pre-pandemic. During the pandemic I even bought weights to do things at home and started running occasionally. But seemingly just the fact that I was inside 99% of the time, not doing my usual 10k+ steps of walking around town, and not excercising as much, meant that when I tried to go back to the gym, I didn't have the stamina for my normal workouts. I got discouraged and spent 3 months doing next to no excercise while I learnt to code for a new job. It got so bad that walking was now tiring and I even went to the doctor about my heart. Doctors kept telling me I was fine. So I had to spend the next couple months rehabilitating myself by first taking long walks, then running 3 times a week alongside that, then finally doing one full weight training workout in the gym with two runs, then 2 gym days 2 runs, then 3 gym days 3 runs, while keeping my steps up every day. Until now finally I can consistently do 3 times a week without feeling terrible and can actually run a lot further than I ever could during the (height of the) pandemic. It's insane how much damage being locked down can do to even a young body.

I do wish I'd been more specific in my email but honestly Matt I just hardly even know where to begin, my situation is perhaps more severe and complicated than you will have ever seen despite the fact that I 100% believe and would even go as far as saying I KNOW that it is caused only by muscles... What I meant by too hard is that I just have not been able to get the right muscles to fire.. I have been trying day in day out and failing for 2 years. 2 years ago I fasted for 2 weeks (while lying in bed the whole time from feeling so feint from fasting...) which has wreaked havoc on my body causing severe atrophy of some groups of muscles that were already weak, after fasting I have ended up with the type of muscle imbalance often referred to as a diastasis recti, my obliques and middle abdominals now hold a horrific amount of tension and are always at work while my deep lower transverse abs and anterior pelvic floor are absolutely non existent and there is just a bulge if air space down there. Not long before I fasted I tried the lying posterior tilt exercise and felt my deep lower abdomen light up like never before, allot of quivering and shaking but it felt great, like it so badly needed the stimulation I then also practiced the posterior tilt into hip thrust and felt my glutes/hams light up like never before also and within days my hips/ pelvis felt so much stronger and balanced, so I knew these had been long standing weak areas for me. But since the fasting madness, trying to do those same excercises with any success has been absolutely hopeless. I have since realised that I have severe atrophy from head to toe, but its like 20 - 25% of the muscles for each section of the body (around 2 of the foot arch support muscles for each lower leg, inner hamstring/adductor Magnus, inner glute max, anterior pelvic floor, deep lower abs, seemingly some anterior intercostals, deep cervical flexors. and also possibly even upper limb and hands are involved... The rest of the muscles up and down my body that aren't atrophied seem to still have more than adequate development. Recently since the email I sent you I have tried doing a hands and knees (sort of like a very easy regression of a plank) instead of the lying tilt as I thought I'm just in too much bad practice of doing it wrong for so long. Doing the hands and knees has helped me realize that upper and mid back tightness especially was stopping me from getting contraction of my weak lower abdomen/groin area, though, I have to focus on very subtlely contacting even from head all the way down to toe in order to actually get a somewhat successful contraction of my lower abs/groin..... Madness..... Have you ever seen or heard of anything quite like this?.........

Hi Isaac, sorry to hear about your condition. not sure if you ever heard of Dr Joe Dispenza. He has channel on you tube and some icredible testimonials. He is teaching about heart and brain coherence and it is through meditation and visualisation. You are placebo is the best book on the subject. Look him up and see if you want to give it a try. Good luck on your journey to healthy body.

Hi, i think you need emotional support to get out of this situation. But i think it is necessary to start moving regardless of current condition. I think it's very important to find one's own way and start moving, doing something. Otherwise nothing will never happen. I really think you need emotional support though, and this is good normal thing because everyone needs it

@@sonofabraham4094 your beliefs create your reality. If you ever want to change it, you now where to find the information you need to get better. I believe GuitarShark has nailed it. You need at least one person or multiple people around you to provide some structure to keep you moving the right direction. Are there issues? Yes. Is there an eventual way out of them? Yes. It will take you time, support, and trust to get there. You may need to let go of and refine your notions of what sensations are "right" and "wrong." It's very hard to say anything through a keyboard, but based on the words you've written, you'll have work to do and it would be best to find people who can help you do it in person!

I have been to several different pt’s, chiropractors and doctors all they can tell me after mri’s, X-rays and ultra sound is I have osteoarthrosis. I have about 8 inches on abduction in my legs, my hip flexors are extremely tight. I have no glute or hamstring strength, can’t do even a partial squat and it takes an act of God to get into the tub or even step up onto a curb without holding on to something. Thank you for your videos I just found them and I am going to try to do what you are suggesting I’m too young to not be able to get out of the floor or even walk up a couple of stairs..

I understand way too much when you talk about being a cog in the machine, ignoring pain and aches. I used to feel pain in several parts of my body several years ago and, when I was talking about it, all that people could do is telling me that I listen to myself too much and that everybody feels pain here and there. I knew that it was not normal to feel pain, so I tried many different things before finally coming to understand what I should do. I just needed to exercise in different ways, avoid going too hard and let myself get some rest. I started by doing a little bit of exercise once a week. Now I can spend an hour in the gym each day easily without being close to hurting myself, because I'm going slowly. I agree that some pains can be more or less ignored, but some cannot: when you feel tearing and ripping inside your knees, your shoulders or any other body part, then it's time to acknowledge that something isn't right. Exercise slowly but surely. Or as a colleague once said to me when I was slowly recovering: "Never stop exercising. Once you stop, it's over."

I don't have negative feelings, I'm just too weak to physically even be able to do the exercises. I'm not talking "it's too hard after a few times" I'm talking if I try to do the movement, it just doesn't happen. Same way it's not uncomfortable to lift 1 ton, it's just impossible to lift 1 ton. You can try and it won't lift. I'm trying hard to find a routine I am physically able to do.

Are there any exercise regimens that will help me gradually get my strength back?

Prior to this I did workout, but after slipping (2) disc in my lower back, that’s on my Sciatic Nerve working out was painful. ( On my left side) Over the past year and a half, I’ve gotten weaker and trying to get back to how I use to be. I experience pain & tingling also laying on my back. Sleeping is difficult. What would you suggest at my age to start doing? Thank you!

Hi, thank you so much for all the videos. My problem is this: I had 3 MRIs on my thoracic spine and right hip because of my right side pain (intercostal muscles and right hip/upper glute) and nothing is wrong they say....haha. Every couple of weeks, when I try strength training again, I feel the same pain, especially the muscles on the right side b/t shoulder blade all the way down and around the ribcage. Sometimes its so bad it spasms or deep contractions. Any idea what this could be? The hip issue is probably a separate issue but maybe not? Any advice would be great! Thanks!

Thanks for the advice it's good to have the reminder however I wonder if Isaac might have meant something more along the lines of how do we recover? I'm still checking through your videos so maybe you've already done a video on that? The truth is it's not hard to do the exercise it's hard to deal with the repercussions when you're overweight or struggling to deal with life. For me there can be significant swelling and migraines. I have listened to so many people tell me your body just has to get used to it with no advice on how to deal with it. Surely there are things that will help our body not have such likelihood to become disruptive?? I just wish people would address all the issues not simply that are muscles aren't quite used to it. This much is definitely true but there's more to play here. Some of us have chronic illnesses some of us have problems with inflammation my specific issue that is most often triggered through exercise is becoming extremely either off-centered because the exercise is targeting certain areas therefore other areas are not getting worked as much or I'm too weak on one side and too strong on the other. Therefore the side that makes up its just fine but the other side is extremely weak and it causes like a crippling affect one side is getting stronger than the other more and more just furthering the issue Another issue is that we have nerve damage we may be in car injuries or things like that which started the onset of the problem.. not all of us stop moving because we just got out of doing exercise. I was doing really good and losing weight and then I had a fall and injured he's been very difficult to learn how to work around similarly experience migraines when I work out and during my menstrual cycle which makes it exceedingly more difficult to both being real pain caused by other contributors and worsened by exercise.. I like all the advice I hope that I can find some more advice that can be applied to my specific situation.

I’m struggling a bit I’ve been chronically ill and then disabled for quite a few years but I finally found a doctor to help me get off prescription steroids that I was wrongly talked into taking and when I got off the second one I couldn’t even lift myself off the bed and I spent two months of hell in the bed not being able to even walk to the bathroom I had to eat on my back but I refused to go to a doctor because I knew they would just put me back on steroids Anyway I somehow survived even after being in ICU and Took my first steps again in September after being fully bedridden for two months September 2021 sorry, and I’m now making my own meals and able to function some but when I do some exercises it’s like I can’t even function and the next day I can barely hold myself up and it feels like I have 100 pounds on my back FYI I was a competitive athlete as a kid and teenager and then a professional singer and entertainer for 20 years in my adult life so it’s difficult for me to understand why it’s taking so long for me to get stronger It’s been almost a year and a half Just like you, I need all the encouragement I can get and hoping that it is possible to build my muscles back I’m 50 years old Thank you Matt I really do appreciate you
