The whole appeal of these guys, to me, is time listen to their reasoning and experience and basing how you think against them to see if you agree or not. Plenty of times the things they love are things I hate, or vice versa. Just "these games are overrated, trust us. You don't need to form an opinion of your own." doesn't make sense to me.

And of course everyone realises, that if a game is overrated, it doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad game, could be bad for some people, but overrated basically means it gets more credit than it deserves. And even though I like Dominion, it's an OK game, I feel it's hugely overrated. But it's just subjective opinion.
@SnowDragonka9 жыл бұрын
+Phil Dinius I don't know, every time I mention deck-building, the first thing I hear is Dominion. And it's something people tend to compare other deck-builders to. My pick for most over rated game is Pandemic. I never feel like I'm actually playing anything. Because everyone knows what each character is best at and there is a clear best move each round, I don't get any input on what to do. I may as well go in the other room and make a sandwich. I don't have to be present at all for my character to be played.

Sounds like an issue with your group instead of the game. Instead of letting everyone make your decision, do it yourself.

+Ambaa Choate (Carolyn) I own/played several co-op/semi-coop games i.e. Lord of the Rings, Forbidden Desert, Forbidden island, Elder Sign, Doom, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Middle Earth Quest, Touch of Evil and Pandemic and for some reason I find Pandemic to be the most susceptible to quarterbacking. This is at least purely from my anecdotal evidence based point of view. Even with games that usually lean towards obvious best moves like Forbidden Desert/Island I find they all seem to offer a little more independence to the owner of the character than Pandemic does.
@kustomkure6 жыл бұрын
The issue you have described is there for any cooperative game. You need to 1. Find a better game group 2. Start getting involved more in the process while playing coop games
@joeskis6 жыл бұрын
That's the problem with most co-ops. People decide what the best option is for your character and expect you to do it. If you like co-ops try the ones where there is no time for discussion (Xcom) or one with hidden roles, objectives (dead of winter)
@dorpth6 жыл бұрын
Nah. While quarterbacking is an issue in most co-op games, it most definitely is more prominent in Pandemic. Like Agricola, Pandemic popularized its genre, but it's LONG been surpassed by better games. Everyone recognizes there's no point to playing Agricola anymore, why not Pandemic? That's why it's one of the most overrated games ever.

Okay, the thing is that if you're a board game fan, you have to RESPECT Catan. Maybe you don't like Catan, but it's the same way how even anime fans who don't like DBZ still have to respect it because of what it did for the medium. Personally, I think Catan is a masterpiece. Specifically, it's a masterpiece because it's simple, yet deep. I love games that take minutes to teach but have such intricate strategies that you're constantly finding new ways to play. On top of that, it's one of the reasons and board games exploded in recent years so even if you don't give it your love, it still must command your respect.

Zee sounds like George Carlin when he's making his case against Agricola =). Having played a lot of boardgames as well (though not 3000) my pick for most over-rated game is: MUNCHKIN. /RANT START!!!! Yes it's got a decent theme and it can be mildly amusing (funny the first time, old after that) but it's a game that is completely irrelevant and more often than not based around luck. I don't understand what the point is of the game. Yes I know it's whoever hits level 10 first but the game plays such that the first 9 levels are completely irrelevant. You play with your buds and for the most part you don't really care what they do until they hit level 9. You can virtually snooze through the game to this point, and wake up when someone does. At this point it's all about ganging up on this one person and the more people that play this game at once, the more the luck factor increases and the harder it becomes to actually legitimately win. And in the process of stopping this one person others inevitably make it to level 9 too. This goes on until everyone has been or is level 9 at some point or another. And now it's all about the luck factor - drawing the right combination of cards to thwart the other players. The more players there are however the more power they will have to stop you at every turn. Nearly every game of Munchkin I have played lasted way longer than it ever should have. Just about every time I've played or have seen this game played the game has ended due to players giving up on account of begin bored with how long all this has gone on, or players teaming up and offering to assist one particular player to nab the win because they just. want. the game. to be. over with. In my opinion that's not fun, that's not winning, that's a piss poor game that's got some serious end game issues. And to top it all off you've got one of the worst rules in any game ever created: Whoever owns the game is the ultimate authority on any disputes. As I mentioned in another one of the Dice Tower vids this is the "It's My Yard" rule back from when you played tag in your friends yard and the game stopped going in his/her favor. It's a terrible game that doesn't deserve a fraction of the fame and fortune it's garnered over the years. /RANT END!

Could not agree more. I bought a bunch of the sets because they were on sale for super cheap clearance pricing, and only because my friends like it, but after playing them a handful of times I still regret even spending the little money I did on it.
@ashleymcmullin629610 жыл бұрын
I have a friend from a different gaming group who also played a lot of munchkin with his friends. Not as much as my group, but a fair amount. He made many similar claims, 'all luck' 'whoever gets to 9 first never wins' etc. Our group has played over 100 games of Munchkin, maybe 200. I disagreed, and finally one faithful camping trip we get to mix it up. He never won. Not even close. In fact, only two different people (out of 8) won any games. Myself and a friend. His group just didn't understand the game. They sat around playing cards, racing to 9. Then they would throw bad stuff at each other, complain a bit, and one of them would randomly win. They would even complain if they didn't hit 9 first. So if you hit 9 first, you're upset because no one who hits 9 first never wins, and if you don't hit 9 first, you complain because 'it's not fair!'. Maybe, *gasp* hitting 9 first should not be a priority? You surely don't want to sit at 1 all day either, but like any bluffing game, you want people to think you don't have the means to win, while actually having.. the means to win. It's all about calculating this means. Yes, Munchkin is a bluffing game. My friend's group didn't get this, either. I remember an early example of this that weekend: 'Hey you can't kill that monster, and no one else can... but I can. The problem is... I need to use 3 cards just to beat it. So, I'll need all of the treasure.'' 'Really?' 'Yeah' 'Oh... okay. I guess it's worth gaining a level and only fair if you have to lose all of your cards' 'Exactly' 'Let's get that monster!' 'Okay I use this card to win' 'Hey that's only one card' 'Yeah.' 'But you said 3 cards' 'I guess you learned something, now pay up' And many other things, like threatening bad stuff for treasure. They never did these things, things are at the heart and core of the game. I'm not saying Munchkin is the best game ever. It's not. But there are many people who never get passed the most basic interpretation of the rules for various reasons. Yes you bluff, you threaten and you're an dick in Munchkin.

The same could be said for Eldritch horror. Both games are long, too. I've had an eldritch horror game last well over 4 hours. I find that people who dont like these games dont like the themes (lovecraft or zombies) or don't know how to play co-op games to their fullest potential.

I dont know if that is sarcasm or not, but every game caters to a specific group (or groups) of people. People who LOVE games like Axis and Allies and Risk, typically dont like games like apples to apple or dixit because they arent strategy games in the sense like A&A is. Same goes for people who like classic games like monopoly or sorry, they have a really tough time getting into heavy games like TI3 or Arkham horror. dead of winter and eldritch horror are the same. Both are heavy co-op games. If you never played them or get into the genre, you might say their overrated, but I bet if you played both along with other co-ops, you will find they both bring new elements to the co-op scene.

People will kill me, but Pandemic would top my list so very hard. I own a copy of the game, but try as I might to make the game exciting, the response to it has always been mixed at best. After playing Forbidden Island by the same designer, this game feels very lacking compared to it, and I have a problem with that stupid rule where you can only exchange cards if you and the partner are in that exact city at the same time. And then there's the ending - the Sopranos of the Board Game World, if you will - even Forbidden Island had you leaping on to a helicopter as the island around you collapses, which made you feel like a badass! This game? Makes you feel like you didn't accomplish anything, really. Like, "That's it?" Sorry, folks. Respect if you love Pandemic, it's a quality game, I'm sure, but I simply do not see how this game topped people's 'Best of" lists two years ago. MANY games are much better than this.

Figure there are almost 30 games so that's 2 minutes of discussion for each game. If you're going to call something overrated you'll need to explain why.
@note4note80410 жыл бұрын
I really think Sam's attacks on the "Sacred Cows" would feel a lot more than just faux controversy if he had any actual reasons for why he thought the games were so overrated. He gives a legit reason for 7 Wonders and Zombicide, and then that's it. Compare the #1 from Zee and Tom to Sam's, and you'll notice that agree or disagree, they do give reasons for their argument. Sam just throws his hands up in the air and makes a "That's right, I said it." face. IMO, Power Grid is crazy overrated. It's a basic economy game, and all too often in the games I've played everyone sees the winner coming a turn before the game's even over, leaving the last turn as a complete snore. It's so light, and yet it's the worst kind of game to use with noobies as there's too much number crunching.
@Straddllw9 жыл бұрын
Most overrated game for me is: Pandemic. Really? All you do is calculate the probabilities and hope you get the right cards. That's it. It was fun the first time, but the second and third time, you're already sick of it. Where's the game? Where's the replayability? Even after buying the expansion, it still feels the same. Then you immediately regret it. Sorry Zee, Pandemic sucks.

WH40K is easily the #1 most overrated game. It's not that it's a BAD game, it just ain't that good. People spend a fortune in time and money on that thing.
@delusionnnnn10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but frankly, it's so much its own thing that nobody's going to suggest to a boardgaming group "hey, let's all paint miniatures for ten hours, set up bases for an hour then play Warhammer for two hours" as opposed to, say, Catan or Ticket to Ride or ... pretty much any board game. It's like trying to decide to play Dungeons and Dragons vs. Sorry - they're such different things that such a choice simply won't happen.
@affablevagrant10 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with all that. I wouldn't ordinarily have brought up wargaming, but one of the guys put 40k on their list of "10 Games Not To Play With Angry People" so I figured it was fair game.
@AirahsELL10 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't really include 40k in a list of these kinds of games since it's a collectible miniatures game and you have to actually build your army instead of just buying a box and being ready to play; that'd be sort of like including Magic the Gathering in a list of overrated games (which it is). Games Workshop in general is an overrated company, but I will admit that 40k is one of my favorite sci-fi settings. I just don't get why people obsess over its GRIMDARK and all that other stuff. 40k is just a game that I don't really think is that enjoyable to play in any circumstance unless you're willing to go leaps and bounds in order to get it working for you. At least with CCGs you just buy packs of cards or individual cards and build decks. If you want to play any miniatures game like that you have to put a lot of work into it. Miniatures are fun, but I don't play miniature games to make models. I'd buy models if I wanted to make models.
@affablevagrant10 жыл бұрын
Ordinarily I wouldn't have brought up 40k... but one of the guys put 40k on their list of games not to play with angry people, so I figured 40k was on the table (no pun intended).

I really enjoy playing Catan. What games are you referring to as being better than Catan?
@18729598 жыл бұрын
I disagree big time on Dominion. Great game along with expansions that add endless combinations making each play basically different and certain strategies being more successful depending on what cards you have out. It's got interaction, theme is really up to you with the cards you have in play, a good player range, and a simplicity that makes it inviting for most people. I'm starting to think its popularity invites an elitist attitude. Going to keep being a great gateway game for years to come.

I've played a lot of Dominion, and have to disagree with you. I can no longer stand it. It's a brilliant game mechanically, but players who want any kind of theme or narrative to be integrated with the game, rather than just tacked on, are going to be sorely disappointed.
@GrandElemental8 жыл бұрын
It's a brilliant game mechanically = it's a brilliant game.
@alexsherry12385 жыл бұрын
@@GrandElemental I'd think of it this way. "Wanna play a deckbuilder?" "Yeah, I love that mechanism." "Dominion?" "Nah, what else do you have?" I feel like that conversation is much more likely to happen with people who want to just have a good time. No need to cling to something that was once great, if there's now much better options out there.

I have the same reaction to that, I can't even begin to understand how they can dislike Galaxy Trucker so much. I've played with a lot of different people and every single person I've played with has had a good time, laughing like crazy at some points and getting seriously invested in their ships at others. I think their dislike speaks to a different world view and a different idea of what fun even means. I love the DT top 10s, but I'd never buy something purely because of one.

I see many people saying that they dislike these "Top Ten" videos taking so long, but personally, I like it. I get to learn about the game, what makes it good and so on, and it's funny! However, I do agree that it makes a poor go-to for someone who just wants to know if a game is good or not, which is what many might be looking for, though these videos don't pretend to cater to this either.
