Ukraine declared its independence in 1917 - 105 years ago. But it was occupied by the Soviet Union until 1991. Most East European countries were occupied during long periods of their history. Estonia was occupied from 1219 to 1918 and again from 1940 to 1991. On the other hand: states like Germany and Italy were not created before 1866. Before there were only many small states. It is never that simple. Also Finland was in association with Sweden and Russia until 1917 before it got independence.

I live in the former Confederate States of America, specifically North Carolina, it existed for 4 years. Sometimes I think of Ukraine as an analog to the American South. The South seceded in 1861, and for the first couple years it was doing well against the North, Union troops were getting slaughtered. I don't think Putin is anything like Abraham Lincoln however. In 1991, Russia let Ukraine secede and it has been an independent country for 31 years, and now Russia is trying to take it back. If Abraham Lincoln just decided to let the South go and become an independent country in order to be rid of slavery, I think it would have been wrong for some later president to start a war with the Confederate states after it existed as a seperate country for so many years, fighting the Civil War to keep the South in the 1860s I think was legitimate.

I love the "Ukraine is part of Russia" idiots. Both were part of the USSR, from which the independent nations of Ukraine and the Russian Federation broke off. Before that, only a portion of Ukraine was Russian and I believe even that part was only Russian for a hundred or hundred fifty years. So saying Ukraine is part of Russia is like saying the US is part of the UK. Actually, there might be a stronger argument for that as the colonies were originally created as subject dominions of the British Crown.

I've visited Ukraine multiple times, but most recently last November, just prior to the current invasion. On that trip I traveled eastward, making Kharkiv my base camp but venturing eastward to Lysychansk to see a Soviet era mosaic recommended by an adventurous KZbinr. This was supposed to be a contested region, but there were no signs of "genocide" or Ukrainian oppression. I don't pretend to be fluent in either Ukrainian or Russian, but there were no signs of oppression. Fast forward to today and people I know from that area can recount myriad atrocities committed by the so-called Russian liberators. One of my main sources of reliable information is a couple I helped escape from that part of the world. Truth is always the first casualty of war, but no one should ever expect truth from Putin's Moscow.

More broadly, the Europe underwent 100 years of reorganization into the modern nation states starting with Bismark’s unification of germanic principalities from 1850. The dissolution of the Soviet Union simply took longer. Hence the Cold War. The events of 1991 are a part of the continuity of the historic transformation of the nation states of Europe. Gorbachev recognized the logical trajectory. Putin may want to go backwards, but the kleptocracy that filled the power vacuum has clearly destroyed the viability of the Russian federation. My paternal family (Great grandfather and grandfather) emigrated from Ukraine after WWI. I grew up speaking of my “Russian” heritage, but I am proud now to speak of my Ukrainian heritage. Ukraine as it is was created by Nikita Khrushchev, in 1954, as an expanded administrative division of the USSR. More autonomy was given to oblasts by Kruschev after the death of Stalin as compensation for the famines and genocidal repression of the Stalin era and as Communist reform recognizing the ethnic groups comprising the USSR. Ukraine has no historical interest in the Crimea and most of post-‘91 E Ukraine whatsoever, as easily recognized by demographic maps of Ukraine.

The bit you mentioned about Donbas getting bombed by the Ukrainian authorities is something that media doesn't mention. I found out also that one of the previous presidents of Ukraine was pro-Russia. I also found out that during the Soviet times, a lot of Russians were offered the opportunity to move to Crimea and the eastern areas at the time. I've spoken to a language teacher from Donetsk and even though she was born there, she identifies as Russian. Another example is someone who I met from Estonia. He said that he's Russian even though he has never been to Russia. The concept of being a nationalilty that you weren't born is very alien to me. As a British citizen, you are British if you were born in the UK and grew up here regardless of where your parents are from. I'm glad you're settling into the UK and love watching these good-quality videos. Despite the situation, you remain in good spirits.

The relationship between the UK and Ireland is very similar to the relationship between Russia and Belarus. I think it's terrible what they are doing in Ukraine. Your explanation of Donbas referring to the Donetsk Coal Basin made me think of a region of the United States called the Permian Basin. The Permian basin in west Texas is rich in oil and natural gas. Russian trolls could claim west Texas, since Permian refers to the geologic Permian period which gets its name from the Russian region of Perm in the Ural mountains. The Russian trolls could then point out that one of the major cities in the Permian Basin is Odessa, Texas. Ergo, Odessa belongs to Russia. (Being a Russian troll is way too easy ). 😉

I went to Russian school and we always learnt that Gogol was Ukrainian. All his stories are set in Ukraine. I don't know where you heard this from that "Moskovities claim him as their own". Gogol has always been known as a Ukrainian author.

In the west for well over a century, the muskovites claimed gogol as a great russian writer. In fact, his original taras bulba was flagged by czarist censors for being too Ukrainian in tone and needed to be changed to the current well known version, which is very moskow and czarist-centric.
